Christmas 2022 was approaching…read moreand pastor Aaron kept inviting everyone, regardless of age, to attend the young adult's Christmas party. So I decided to go, even though I was 67 years old. These folks are all white. There was one token black on staff, but he left. I arrive and no one greets me, so I just walk in and roam around. They had a ping pong table, so I stood nearby watching. A guy walks over and asks me if I am going on the Israel trip. Nope. But it turns out he is a US Navy officer. I was in the Navy for 4 years back in the 80s, so we talked about military stuff for awhile. Other than that, the only other person to even say hello was Dani - a cute young lady who was on staff and Niko, a young man who attened my home group with his parents. It felt like I was invisible, but I knew that people saw me - they just ignored me. Basically, the same reaction I get when I walk in to a bar or any room. Then it was time for the Gift Exchange. A weird custom that Christians have where they bring "white elephant" (gag) gifts to give others. Dani said, "Everyone grab a chair and form a cirlce!" So I grabbed a chair and walked over to where people were forming a circle. I was actively impeded and hip-checked out of the cirlce and wound up sitting alone behind the cirlce. Yet everyone pretended not to notice. No one spoke up and said, "hey, make room for Mr. Sanders." They just proceeded as if I wasn't there. I sat there for 10 minutes and watched - and waited. Nothing. So I got up and left. I thought, "wow, that was a mistake." At least 50 so-called Christians showing just how selfish they really are. Refusing to exercise hospitality or even basic courtesy. All because I was not one of them. Even though I was ostensibly their "brother in Christ," I was not part of their generation. I was a hated "boomer." I discovered first hand that ageism is as real as racism. Young people blame old people for their problems. They hate us. At least alot of them do. And even if the "world" acts this way, I expected better from the church. But nope. They are even worse in some ways. More arrogant. There is no hate like "Christian love."

After more than 20 years at Calvary Church Clearwater, I can honestly say this is a place for real…read morepeople--not perfect people. It's a church full of broken, imperfect folks who are simply doing their best to follow Jesus, and that authenticity is what has kept our family here for so long. Like any large church, there have been seasons where decisions didn't sit well with everyone. But one thing I've learned over the years is that there are always two sides to every story, and the public usually only hears one. I've seen firsthand that Pastor Willy and the leadership team are thoughtful, kind, and prayerful people who genuinely seek to make decisions they believe are necessary for the health and future of the church. This is a Bible-believing, Bible-preaching church that stays grounded in truth while still creating space for grace and growth. Yes, it's a big church--but if you get involved in a ministry or join a Life Group, it quickly feels much smaller and more personal. That's where real connection happens. I'm also continually encouraged by the impact beyond the walls: planting over 150 churches, helping revitalize struggling ones, sending more than 150 people into missions, and supporting over 150 children through foster care and adoption. That kind of outward focus says a lot. At the end of the day, it's a community of sinners--just like me--walking together and trying to follow Jesus a little more faithfully each day. And that's a place worth being.

Calvary has been my church for about 15 months now. The church is huge...but it is also small and…read morecontains family. I will explain in a moment. Calvary is large and comfortable with all of the amenities. You could come into a service and be left alone if you desired. You could have privacy and solitude without giving away your information. You could also do what I did and dive full in. You could experience every facet that this church has to offer and become even better for it. You could join a small group and hence join a church family. This is where you build lasting relationships and fellowship. This is where you find your support team. Your friends...your family. Don't let the size of the church or parking lot intimidate you. We have plenty of parking and plenty of space inside. You can come in any of the main entrances. We are a very friendly church and several people will greet you on your way in. We will not ask questions or for your information however. This is how it works. There are two services: 9:15am and 11am. There are also many groups that meet during both sermons. We have childcare too. Your children will learn about the bible and have fun while you are free to attend service and/ or a group. On a typical Sunday most members of the church pick a service and pick a group or volunteer for the other service. I personally tend to go to the first service followed by a group second service. Once a month, I attend first service and volunteer second service in the Children's area. Volunteering is optional, but there are many areas to do so if you would like to give back to the church. I like to volunteer for the New Here area for special services too (like Christmas Candlelight). Speaking of giving back, it is explained that the tithing is for members and guests are not expected to donate. We also have online donations available, so no one even knows if you are donating in service or how much. That is between God and you. As far as amenities go...our church is very nice. We have free coffee every Sunday (the pecan praline is amazing). We have a cafe if you wish to buy a pastry or something else. We have tons of comfortable seats. Our air conditioning is cold (I normally bring a sweater). We have a full band with electric guitars, drums, piano, etc. We have spotlights and televisions. Our lyrics are displayed so that you can sing along with the worship music (which we typically stand for). It's an amazing place to worship. Our Pastor is Pastor Willy. He does a phenomenal job of discussing the scripture and relating it to real life. He often uses humor, statistics, quotes, and real life scenarios. Ironically, Pastor Willy once addressed the fact that Calvary has reviews in a sermon. He mentioned Yelp. It was quite amusing. I personally find that the time flies by and that I learn something almost every Sunday. There have been a few times I have disagreed with something he has said, but that is an opportunity too. He generally has a very well thought out and enlightening sermon. All of our other Pastors are really helpful as well. I have had personal experiences with three other Pastors. I will say that they were all really there for me when I lost a family member too (even though I was new to the church at the time). I highly recommend Calvary. You have nothing to lose by trying it out. If you need someone to sit with you or someone to talk to about the church or God...please reach out. I will be here every Sunday unless I am out of town. That is another thing I should mention..we share our services live on Facebook too. This is great if you are sick or out of town. You could also use it to check us out before attending. However, I will say that the services are much more powerful in person. I hope to see you there.

I didn't know what a true church family could be until I found Mission City. These people are not…read morejust people that you see on Sunday. They are not just people that you give a fake "I am good" to and move on. They are people you go through life with. They are family. I have been coming here for a little over a year and a half now. Walking in the door, I am greeted by hugs, good mornings, and people genuinely wanting to check in on me. People pray for me... sometimes without me asking or knowing. I have met some of my closest friends at this church. I know that I can call a few dozen people here and they would come help me. Yes, some of this comes through being an active member and attending every week. You have to invest yourself in the community too. I volunteer for events and in different areas. I am also a member of a life group that meets once a week in a living room. The Pastors are extremely relatable. They will point out their flaws and want to be held accountable. They are also extremely honest and humble. I could tell some stories.. but I am not going to. Pastor Josh Poole has a way of making the scripture come to life and speak to exactly what you are going through. The worship team is incredible... the best that I have ever witnessed. The worship is modern. It is very well thought out by our worship leader. It generally coordinates directly with the sermon for the week. They sometimes have acoustic or worship nights too. I really look forward to them. It is praise and worship at its finest. The church is not pushy. We give a small quick speech about how generosity is our privilege with how you can donate, and that is it. There are not buckets passed around. No one is keeping tabs.... God knows. Many of the members (including myself) donate online. We welcome new guests to sign up and get an (awesome!) gift. However, you could easily visit and walk away without much interaction if you prefer. The Holy Spirit is present here. Very strongly. It is hard to really put in to words. This place is very, very special. Come see for yourself. You will be welcome no matter what. We have service at 9am and 11am on Sundays and often have special events (check the website for those).

They have chosen to offer outdoor services with socially distanced circles marked in the front lawn so each family can sit together & enjoy church safely. Pastor Poole is a very personable & kind man who makes each person feel like part of the family. His message is always well thought out and keeps true to the love that Jesus has for each of us. This church is a very accepting place and puts love for your fellow neighbor above all judgement. We had been members for years so it pains me to write this review. My special needs sister…read moreaccidentally donated an engraved snow globe our deceased father left her to CBTS thrift store. She went down to try and get it back. The ministers wife was so nasty she actually burst into tears. Luckily an older woman took pity on her and allowed her to look and locate the snow globe. The ministers wife then proceeded to charge my special needs sister for the globe. This is also weeks after my family donated china and silver to the thrift store. What would Jesus do? Not treat the disabled like this.
