In the office, immediately she'll look at and then tape your foot with a pad or support and suggest you wear it for a about a week. Once it's padded, during the office visit she will talk about and push you toward getting custom orthotics made. You may get a song and dance about ones she's had to make for others, especially one of her children and how much it's benefited her since she was very very young. X-Rays follow to show what the problem is, and how it can be dealt with. A second appointment will have you getting your foot taped up in a bracing to be worn for a week, and may leave you with heel pain once taken off. The same orthotics lecture will be presented again. To schedule follow up appointments after a problem is diagnosed, her nurse Wendy will then tell you custom orthotics are the solution which will solve any problem you may have, at the recommendation of Dr. Bedard-Ryan. Then, if you have the audacity to disagree and say you just want the problem fixed because it's causing you so much pain and the padding/taping didn't help- you're cut off and spoken over. If you can get a word in edgewise, and manage to explain you don't want the problem simply masked by shoe inserts which will run $150-$200 and not covered by insurance, you'll have the pleasure of having her tell you to seek out a second opinion. No compromise- this office wants you to buy orthotics first before other treatment is available and offered. Moral of the story: She wants everyone in custom orthotics as the main treatment. First, it's trying a pad first, then taping your foot up to "see if this helps" while literally telling you there's no other options available unless orthotics are casted, bought, worn and "tried out" for months before anything further is done. If there's a problem, like a bunion which can be removed quite easily, listening to the *patient* explain how they've dealt with the pain and annoyance for years and it's at the point where wearing flip flops or going barefoot is becoming the only option for relief should hold some weight to have the bunion removed. Not masked with shoe inserts, and then surgery months later because they didn't work in the first place. But don't worry- there's a payment plan available through the billing department in case you have trouble coming up with the money. So yeah. I'm not so pleased with my "treatment" at all. I would definitely not recommend her. The positive: She has a very nice and kind demeanor, and explains things very well.
