Since it opened in the late '90s, Indigo has always been the best coffee shop in Cambridge (IMHO!) I did more revision for my finals here than I did in the college library, as it has the most wonderful chilled-out vibe that soon puts any exam nerves at bay. Small but compact, it occupies a Central location hidden down a well known student short-cut. It serves a superb mocha (with or without the floating marshmallows) as well as a mean cheese toastie. A popular hang-out for a lot of drama types and musicians from the nearby ADC, there's a very cultural vibe here that somehow manages not to be stuck up. read more

Usually when I come here it's not crowded and there's plenty of space on the second floor, but I usually don't come here for a long time--a brief visit is all it takes really. But I have to admit that it doesn't compare to the coffee shops I frequent in the US, but because it was so accessible and quite good during my stay in Cambridge, I approve. read more

Very quirky, tiny little coffee shop down a small windy old cobbled alley. Usually quite cheery service. Coffee, bagels and home made cakes are the dish of the day. All freshly made for you and brought to your table after ordering at the impossibly small counter. This was my favorite lunch hangout while I lived in Cambridge. Although they're almost never not crowded, there's generally a seat upstairs for the lone luncher or the odd pair. Their Greek salad was my favorite. Also their bagels were fantastic. They have an incredible variety (salmon/cream cheese & chorizo/tomato being my favs) - I used to grab mine to go before wandering off to Market Square. This is the quaint, magical, alleyway joint I miss most about Cambridge. Sitting in the little space upstairs felt like a little perch getaway. I don't really do coffees, because I think they are waste of money especially in all these top coffee shops (you know the ones I mean). Therefore, going to cafés is not usually my thing, but indigo differed because of its location and the service provided. The best thing about indigo café is the warm and friendly environment; you could add that it is very cute. It is has two floors, the down floor has the counters and stuff and the upper floor is very colourful and cosy. The café is well situated, just opposite one of the colleges of Cambridge University, which makes it popular with students. I sat down shoulder to shoulders with the other customers, sipping my cup of espresso and just watching people on the street, it may seem sad but it was actually quite interesting. The location provides a very good view of the city and its people, so it is a good place if you are a tourist. This brings me to the only negative thing about the café and that is the size. If you like having your own little space when you go for a coffee, then indigo café may not be the place for you or else you go very early about 9ish when students are yet to invade the place. Otherwise, it is a lovely place to have coffee and light snacks. read more

The lack of space in this brilliant little cafe is a shame, as I would love for more people to be able to experience this cafe. They do the best hot chocolate in Cambridge, topped with cream and marshmallows. And the cakes are divine. You will find it off a tiny alley on Kings Parade - there is normally a chalk board outside which will help you spot it. When you arrive, if you are with a group of people it is worth one of you grabbing a table while the others order, to save you having to eat standing up. Downstairs there are a few tables, but make your way upstairs to a (slightly) larger space with an odd array of differnt chairs and quirky tables, crammed in to make a drink in Indigo quite an experience. Not for the claustrophobic, or those who find narrow, steep stairs a challenge. Perfect for a mid-morning coffee and cake break from shopping. Very good value. read more

I always get mixed feelings when I go to Indigo, on one hand it's a cute little coffee shop, in a great location that makes a nice change from the standard Starbuck/Nero/Costa..., on the the other, I'm not a huge fan of their coffee or bagels. Indigo is a small cafe just off Kings Parade, by the Corpus Playrooms, a tiny ground floor houses a counter and a couple of chairs, whilst upstairs offers a few more cosy seating options. Drinks offered are fairly standard, and whilst the plain tea and coffee are good, I'm not a fan of their chai lattes or more complex offerings. Better are the bagels and other sandwiches, each made to order and freshly toasted, a bagel offers a tasty but not altogether satisfying lunch, with a portion size not quite enough to tide you over till dinner. Whilst Indigo offers a great location, a nice atmosphere and relatively good food. When I go I can't help but feel that I'd be happier had I made the effort to go to urban shed. read more

Indigo café is a very cosy little place with excellent food, coffee and service! Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. The vegan bagle with hummus and sundried tomatoes is recommended. This is a great place to visit if you want somewhere individual rather than the standard chains of coffee houses you can find in every town. The cafe itself is small and cosy, it is very popular however so I recommend sending a friend upstairs to grab a table whilst you buy drinks otherwise you could end up without a seat! I quite like their coffee, the only problem - it is overcrowded most of the time, so quite often I have to look for a chair and walk out with no luck. But if I find a spare chair, I always grab a coffee and occasionally a sesame seed bagel. I ve seen they serve variety of bagels, but those are my favourites. read more

The place is very nice and cozy, but could you please be more careful with gluten free options. It means: please do not serve bread with the GF soup - it could make people think that this bread is GF too while it is not. Do not put normal bread on the salad if the customer asked you for a GF salad, because even a very small piece of normal bread can cause terrible sensations in the stomach of a person with celiac disease. Could you also check sauces you dress your salads with, because if they contain elements which contain gluten, it is terrible. read more

Honestly, Indigo's may be my favourite coffee shop in the world. First off, the people who work in here are legendary and I just adore them all. Secondly, having a coffee here feels like having a coffee in your best friend's house, and that homey atmosphere is unmatched anywhere in Cambridge. They make ridiculously tasty hot chocolates, complete with marshmallows and cream, and delicious lattes, mochas and teas. You can also have a really yummy lunch here, as they have a extensive menu of toasties, baguettes, and ciabattas, and in the 5 years since I first started coming here, their food menu has really expanded, and now includes salads and soups as well. I can't say enough nice things about Indigo. It's worth standing around and glaring at people until they leave so that you can score a table and have a leisurely coffee with friends. read more

Very cheap, independent, "alternative" and quirky neighbourhood cafe in a side alley off busy King's Road. The staff is exceptinoally nice and the coffee very decent. I prefer it by far to all the expensive coffee chains that surround this oasis. The staff is extremely nice and competent. The carrot cake is probably the best in Cambridge, moist and not too sweet. The only problem is its limited space (about 20 seats), so larger groups only find room early morning and later afternoon. Also, it closes relatively early at 5:30. There is a breakfast offer for a toasted bagel and coffee before 11 and a wide selection of daily newspapers is available - good way to start the day or have breakfast after rowing in the morning. read more

Although it can sometimes be difficult to get a table at Cafe Indigo, it's well worth getting up early on a Sunday morning and wandering along either for a bagel and americano or tea and toast, and enjoying the first quiet hour or so to read the free newspapers. The decor is kitsch and welcoming, particularly the painted blue wooden chairs, and the many posters and customer photos certainly add an interesting individual touch. The coffee is strong (they add two espresso shots to every cup), and the mocha one of the best in Cambridge. There's a wide range of sandwich and bagel fillings, as well as delicious cakes, while the service is personal and fantastic- as I was once reading Le Monde before a French lecture the waiter changed the music to something French and 1960's! read more

Indigo is wonderful. It is small, quirky, independant and unpretentious. It is not a chain (hallelujah!). It was also here long before Starbucks tried to take over the universe. Yes, it can be difficult to find a seat as it is popular and tiny, but if you get one, settle yourself in, read the paper and drink as many hot chocolates as you can. It is a fantastic little place to huddle away in the winter months away from the biting Cambridge winter, and if you're a student you could even take some books in and pretend to be working while you're there. read more
