Both seed packets and seedling plants had increased in price by at least 25 % in the past year, a increase that Bonnie plants and Burpee seed company have passed along to the consumer. Now the fun part begins. It's growing season on the farm and even on a gloomy day everything is greening up nicely.

Have you ever heard the term, "nothing fancy"? That may well describe this place. It is indeed,…read morenothing fancy. Have you also heard the term, "hidden gem"? Well, that also well describes this place. Right off Highway 127 along a quiet country road you'll find Lavern and his market. This is where you'll find nice people selling quality produce and vegetables at equitable prices. The doors don't open for you like the big supermarkets. You gotta push them open yourself, but it's worth the effort. Inside is a nice cool store with a concrete floor and every imaginable kind of fresh produce you could imagine. The air is ripe with the smell of fresh fruit, the floors are stacked with bins and boxes and shelves of delicious produce. Some of it is local and some of it is brought in from other markets, but it is all good. We bought around 100 lbs of peaches. Just before we start canning though, I wanted to write this review. This is definitely somewhere that we will come back to time and time again for our produce needs. The store was pretty crowded with happy customers, so I refrained from taking pictures inside. I try not to include other customers in my Yelp photography. But I did get some good pics of the front foyer stacked with melons and sweet corn, anybody's summertime favorites! Outside is a nice selection of hand built, wooden, outdoor furniture. This is the off season for gardeners, but it appears there is a very nice selection of garden plants available at the right time of the year. If you ever wanted a place where you could support American agriculture and family business, this is where you want to buy. It's a little like stepping into an Andy Griffith episode. (Dating myself). Standing there sampling a peach off of Lavern's jackknife, you almost want to take a peek around and see if maybe Aunt Bee or Clara are doing their shopping here. This place is indeed a hidden gem, well worth the time to visit and a destination spot for all those who love that back country, Southern hospitality. Now, it's time to get these peaches in jars. They are going to taste mighty good sometime in February.

Mark asked me if I wanted "fine garden soil, no clumps." To which I said, yes, please. Delivery was quick, but what I received was not what I ordered. I received clay, with some large clumps approx 6-8 inches. It also has little rocks in it. I have video and pictures, but I don't know how to include them in this review. I gave Mark the benefit of the doubt, by calling and questioning the delivery. I was hoping, the wrong order was delivered by mistake. He said, there was no mistake, it "might have a little bit of clay." But no, what I received is straight up clay. I can pick it up and squish it and it doesn't crumble, it stays in the squished form, you know, like clay does. I cannot grow a garden in clay. Which is why I ordered the "fine garden soil, no clumps" from him to begin with. He then responds with "well, that's the best quality soil you'll get around here." I'm disgusted with deception. He sold me "fine garden soil, no clumps." What he had delivered was clay. I would have been better off digging up the grass and saving my $392.20. What is also disturbing is that he is a magistrate, but won't back his businesses product and had a blase' (I don't care, it's your problem, I got my money), attitude about it. I will take my business elsewhere. If he had been honest from the first phone call, my inquiry call, I wouldn't have bought from him. Did he already know this and so he misled me? I can only speculate, but now when I hear the business name and his name Mark Ranshaw, the synonyms that will cross my mind will be dishonest, corrupt, shameful, untrustworthy, etc.
