However, we arrived and found the museum was closed for renovations, so we went to the temporary site. The highlight of the displays was a video of the Roman times in Nijmegen, however it was only in Dutch with no subtitles. There were some other displays available, but the descriptions were only in Dutch and German. We found another video on display, which wasn't working. We were really disappointed in the town of Nijmegen and its museum.

I now understand why tourists would plan an entire day there. Unfortunately, I had 2 other stops that day that I couldn't miss, so I had no choice but left at 2pm. I am soo glad I made it to the main hall first to see Rembrandt's Night Watch (granted it was through a piece of glass due to the restoration process). I would've been devastated if I couldn't. Love the info cards for almost all of the major art pieces to explain in detail on how it was created. Some tips: Buy your ticket ahead of time. Get there 15 minutes before your entrance time to get in line and for bag check. No water inside the exhibits. The coat check is your only option if you don't show up right at when they open. The lockers filled up within minutes. Don't be fooled by the opened ones because that means the lock is broken. Definitely worth a stop at the gift shop. (Like I said above) Plan to spend the whole day there.

It is now a museum which only happened because there was no heir to own it next. Reading the stories gave us Saltburn the movie vibes. We took a uber here from Amsterdam to here. An XL was about $80 so not bad. Weird fact but the Uber XLs are vans that have backward and forward seats. The grounds are stunning and it was fun to explore. There's even deer if you walk down far enough. Loved crossing all the bridges too. Inside the castle itself was not the most royal, but cool to walk through. It's very unique the structure and hallways that I have never seen before in a castle. The gift shop has some really nice items and the price was more reasonable than others I've been to. Overall, a great experience and I recommend if you're in Amsterdam for a few days.

I went through entire museum floor by floor, showroom by showroom. Every corner has something that amazes me. I also got a chance to see how Van Gogh actually looked like! My goodness. I couldn't believe my eyes. A few tips: 1- you must make a reservation online ahead of time. I saw many people got turned away while I was waiting in line for security check. 1b- it's okay to be in line 15 minutes before your supposed arrival time. 2-it's best to buy the audio tour ticket along with the entrance fee instead of buying it on site. It was sold out when I got there. 3-there is a book store on the top floor, and you can actually take home a blank Sunflower coloring sheet for free! It's on an easel at the corner by the window.

It's important to know…read morethat this isn't a traditional museum; it's a high-tech art storage center that happens to be open to the public. The focus is really on the "behind-the-scenes" of art preservation--how pieces are crated, cleaned, and stored in climate-controlled rooms. The building itself is a masterpiece. It spans several floors, and while the individual sections feel small, the central atrium with its zig-zagging staircases is massive. There's an elevator if you want to skip the stairs! They offer free 10-minute "walk-in" tours of the storage compartments, plus more detailed "behind-the-scenes" tours that are worth the extra look. The top floor has a great cafe/restaurant (Renilde) and an outdoor space with a forest of birch trees. The 360-degree view of Rotterdam is breathtaking. If you love architecture or are curious about how museums actually work, it's worth the price. If you just want to see a standard art gallery, you might find it a bit expensive.

The Boijmans is the main art museum in Rotterdam. It opened in 1847, originally with the collection…read moreof Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans. Since then, it has grown and now contains some of the preeminent works of art. Not just Dutch artists, the collection includes Rembrant, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, René Magritte and Salvador Dalí. And those are just the more famous. There are Rubens and Bosch and many more! A friend of mine had visited a few months ago and found the Rembrant/Dali wing was closed. That wing was open this time, but the Kandinsky wing was closed. I'm a big fan of Kandinsky and I have a few posters of his work and his contemporaries. I was bummed. Even bummed, I still enjoyed the Bruegel "Tower of Babel", one of the most famous paintings in Rotterdam. And the Rodin sculptures. Amazing artworks! The museum wasn't particularly crowded on this weekday and they had no issue with photographs, as long as the flash was disabled. An audio tour is available, which I strongly recommend. Note: The museum is a member of the Museumkaart system, so if you're planning on visiting more than three or four museums in the Netherlands, get the card!

It's free and the young man, in addition to explaining what the automatons and musical instruments were and the history behind them, actually wound up all the ancient relics so you could see them in action. Some of this stuff is really old, which is mind boggling. Exceptional museum and so much fun (and I don't have children and am not a child!). A must-visit in Utrecht. Also, a separate note about Holland for those planning their trip. Utrecht and The Hague were our favorite cities. We found Amsterdam to be touristy and overrated. Delft is a nice day trip (20 minutes from The Hague) but don't go to the Delftware factory, it is a tourist trap. Skip Leiden: university town but not that interesting and not much in it.

In the meantime, my adventure on a train, two buses, and getting dropped at the outside gate and then using a free white bike to get to the actual museum was a unique adventure I will certainly never forget! I admittedly headed to the museum purely for the Van Gogh collection, but wound up enjoying a number of rooms of other Impressionists' works (some I'd heard of before and some that were totally new to me.) The museum staff was friendly - if extremely diligent about enforcing their no backpack policy (don't worry they have a cloak room.) If you've been to Amsterdam, already experienced the Van Gogh museum, and consider yourself a fan this is the perfect place to visit your second time around. The collection is lovely, with some pieces that just drip that amazing Van Gogh texture. (Also, an important Odelin Redon painting is tucked around the back in there!) If your trip is set in stone you absolutely MUST book your pass to the museum in advance. Whether you're driving or taking public transport, this will get you access into Hoge Veluwe park without having to stop - either by car, or by getting kicked off the bus at the park gate and having to walk/bike the rest of the way! If you are going to brave the public transportation system a bit of advice: Make sure you tap through the current turnstiles getting to your train so you have an active trip while on the train so the conductors can scan your pass and move on.

One of my very favorites in the world!…read more This museum has everything, and the location is tops. For being outside of Amsterdam, I mean. The food is expensive, of course, but the coffee is good and affordable with the typical apple pie serving. The collection, amassed by Mrs. Kröller-Müller (German descent and quite an interesting lady), constantly changes and it updates with various angles of experiencing art for your personal challenges and artistic/art-appreciation growth. Mrs. Kröller-Müller enjoyed the tutelage of one of the premier art experts during the twentieth century, and with her (unlimited) budget she developed quite a taste for the expressionist and impressionist era paintings. She favored Bart van der Lek, whom she even used as a private painter in their home, also located within the park. Outside, a wonderful garden exhibit with statues and art pieces, including a staircase (to the heavens ;o) which you are not allowed to climb (bad accident occurred a long time ago), where your children can lose their sense of play and run around, even within the Jardin ceramic garden (a stark, black & white enormous above ground piece that is world-famous, but I have misplaced the name in my brain at the moment; I promise to update once I think of it), and where you can enjoy the trees and flowers Holland enjoys growing in its great soil and weather conditions. Because it is located inside a national park (not funded by the Dutch government but with memberships, and private & corporate donations), that is huuuuuuge (for Dutch standards) because Mr. Kröller loved to hunt big animals (and he copied the King, of course), it is such a lovely place to visit. Besides that, this museum houses the largest (!) collection of Van Gogh outside of the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I am such a lucky person to live near...

You can always take a break and lounge on the clear plastic orbs. Afterwards, come back to earth and visit the crazy spider exhibit: intricate webs are suspended from sheet glass. A guard is positioned in the room that visitors don't sneak in a can or two of Raid. Another exhibit featured rows of suspended fabric for the visitor to weave in and out of. After winding through, be rewarded with a highly unusual film short. This museum doesn't have as much art as the sister museum, K20, but it's well worth a visit. We were there in January and it wasn't busy- only a few minute wait to go up "In Orbit" The building is beautiful and spacious; we didn't even see the entire museum but would consider returning next time in Düsseldorf. Quite a few of the exhibits are admittedly unusual but it's still and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon doing something a bit out of the ordinary- especially if you've got painting and sculpture overload.
