They also cater for large parties, such as business meeting or wedding receptions and they really put alot of effort in so its very nice.

That said, the worst part of our stay was when we had dinner in the hotel. After ordering our drinks and food, our drinks arrived and then we were completely neglected for a full hour! Our food hadn't arrived and no one had asked if we wanted more drinks. I had to go and find a staff member at the reception desk to ask why we'd been waiting so long. He said 'we've got a wedding on and so all the food orders have been held up.' I went and sat back at the table and waited a further 15 minutes before the food arrived! After finishing the food it seems we were completely neglected yet again. As we'd now been sat at the table for 2 and a half hours, we just wanted to pay the bill and go to our room. However, the staff were nowhere to be found. Yet again I had to leave the table, go to the reception and track down some staff. I asked if I could pay the bill and he said 'I'll be with you in a minute.' I returned to the table and waited a further 10 minutes! Still no staff. Again I went to reception and said 'can I just pay now?' He told me to go and wait in the bar area. I stood there for 10 more minutes. By this time I was just really frustrated. The staff had kept us waiting all evening and didn't seem to care at all. I went back to the reception and insisted that I paid now. Eventually, they swiped my card. It was an awful experience and the staff didn't even apologise for all the delays and waiting. They just didn't seem to care. As were were a guest at the hotel, this is even more shocking. I dread to think how they treat non-guests in the restaurant. The customer service we received was absolutely appalling and I would never go back to a place that treats its guests in this way.

A friend of mine is getting married here soon though so it must have improved since I was there. My experience was underwhelming, I think, because of the great expectations. I'd always been told that the Alicia was a great place for functions and I think my parents may have even had their wedding reception there (a sure sign of divorce!) but I just couldn't see it myself. In comparison the the Adelphi, I didn't really think there was a great deal of change in the standards, and I wasn't impressed with the Adelphi. Or it could just be that I was drunk at the time and am being overly critical to compensate. My views aside, everyone else seems to think that it's a great venue for functions and receptions, and with its location overlooking the park, can be a nice summer venue. Go to Liverpool on a regular basis, and have stayed in lots of different hotels and apartments (including the Adelphi which I thought was a filthy, horrible hotel), but will choose the Alicia next time as well. The short bus drive or taxi away from the noisy city centre is well worth the money.

The bathrooms had heated towel racks and mirrors (never have to worry about steaming them up). The down side: I think our room was recently painted, as you could still smell the fumes. Also, as like many hotels, it was a bit loud. You could hear people walking down the hall and the band playing downstairs. You could also smell the kitchen - as they have a wonderful restaurant attached to the hotel. Maybe ask for something other than the first floor.

Both times, no one approached us until I got up to ask how we place an order. There was enough staff but were ignoring us. The second time, I was sitting by myself and no one approached me to take an order although one of the server spent almost 10 minutes chatting with one of the patrons. Clearly she had all the time in the world. I patiently waited staring at all the staff trying to get their attention but they just walked by without even glancing at me. My husband finally joined me and sat down. As soon as he sat down, a server came to take our order. I realized they were ignoring me because I'm Asian and he is white. The staff here is very racist. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you're a racist and you're okay with this behavior. We are never coming back here.

Over all don't let these little things steer you away. The prices are reasonable the people are super kind, friendly and accommodating the rooms and beds are comfortable and tidy. It's a popular venue for functions and wedding receptions and while the decor may seem somewhat dated, it's a classic sort of style and is all the way back round to being kitsch and retro. The staff here are thoroughly amazing. They will bend over backwards to ensure everything is okay and the rooms are sparkly clean and delightful. The building itself is pretty darn impressive too, an old merchant's mansion tucked away in the suburbs near Sefton Park and there's plenty of literature available about the area and the city in general if you're stuck for something to do. The restaurant is also ample - breakfasts and lunches are available, and the evening meals come with a rather swanky wine list. Overall it's in a great location, the hospitality is second to none and the rooms start at around £85 for a night. Between two that really isn't bad to get a lot of Liverpool jaunts in over a weekend for example, and I for one wouldn't hesitate to go back. Not too shabby for Emma-Lou! And not for you either.
