Ah yes!  The end is near!  YES, we are slowly getting rid of this covid crap.  We're not out of the…read morewoods just yet, but its a start.  Especially to getting back to some sense of normalcy.  The heatwave is helping to slow the spread.  Folks are getting vaccinated, and I'm seeing less and less masks being worn. Don't get me wrong, but masks are still encouraged.  But let's FORGET about that and 2020 all together.  I'm here to talk about what's goin' on in Slabtown! The Slabtown Outdoor Market has opened up!  And thus far, per their website, the market will be held on the Second Sunday of each month starting: ~ July 11th, August 8th, and Sept 12th. ~ Assuming the following months are TBD. Hours:  11am - 6pm As for walking around and checking out the vendors, I've seen everything from artwork, to beer, clothing, from healing to ice cream and soaps, and even fresh veggies and vegan creations.  I counted at least 30 different vendors and SAMPLES!  YES, some of them had samples.  Its good supporting locals and trying out their products.  Honestly, I wish there were more farmers. I mean, it is a market, but I guess it's not a "farmer's market".   I gotta add that I was most impressed with someone selling cast iron grills; I mean wow, who would've expect this tent. As well as the Nova Rose Knots lady and her macrame items, very creative.  We found new flavor drinks from the GT's Synergy Kombucha Co, and the girl helping us was awesome. I enjoyed Breakside Brewery and a couple of their refreshing brews.  Fifty Licks had some tasty ice cream, and the Cold Brew Coffee crew were fun to chat with.  Most of the vendors seemed pretty upbeat and ready to serve.  Its gotta be this lovely Portland weather as of recent.  Unfortunately I really hate to add this, but there was a lack of trash cans. I was gonna reduce a star, but I'm sure that'll be addressed. Or else the end result will be trash everywhere. Hope the organizers take note of this. Regardless, check out this little market while you can!

The flowers were fresh and the food was amazing. It was family friendly and Bipoc friendly which is so appreciated. Definitely stop by on your walk home or if you're looking for something fun to do!

Encompassing the eastern block of Elizabeth Caruthers park, you'll find about two dozen local vendors, selling farm produce, flowers, handicrafts, baked goods and treats, and a handful of food carts! As this was my first visit, I can't say whether or not the number of vendors is reduced thanks to COVID, as there is plenty of room for expansion along the other faces of the park. I guess I'll have to find out on my next Thursday excursion!

Then I'm on my way. Since this market is two street car stops away from my home, or an easy detour as I drive home, it's super convenient. Especially love that it's on a Thursday afternoon/evening since by this point in the week, we have already consumed the purchases from the markets on Saturday, which for me is PSU or Hollywood. Located on the SW Waterfront by OHSU, situated in front of the beautiful Elizabeth Carothers Park, it's perfect for taking your dog for a stroll or if you want to purchase items for a meal and picnic there. Mt. Tabor Bread is one of the best bakeries in Portland and it's worth a stop by this market just to pick up a baguette or their fig/walnut bread. If you want a scrumptious treat to eat on the spot, highly recommend the buckwheat chocolate chip or dark chocolate chocolate rye cookie. Or both! The Pie-guy has an assortment of pies, all out of this world. Sour cream key lime, marionberry, apple, pecan, blueberry, dazzle dazzle mixed berry - taste them all and it will be a challenge to pick one to bring home! My faves are the key lime and apple. They come in small (for 1-2), medium (2-3) and large. They are a few dollars more than pies I see at other markets, but the quality makes it worth it. Located on both the streetcar and max lines, it's easy to get here. There is street parking also, but depending on the time (5:00 on) it can be challenging. I stop by when they open and usually pull right up in front of stands.

Hey Babe - offered a good cashew cheez. Rangoon Bistro - AMAZING!!! I love Burmese food, we tried two of their dishes, both were FANTASTIC, but spicy! I still ate it, it was so good. I found their pricing to be unique, they asked for $4-$10 per dish. I was very confused at first when they asked me what would you like to pay? I was like, huh?? They said do to Covid, as many our out of work, so they have a sliding scale, $4 is probably their break-even point, and $10 is probably their normal profit point. When he saw my look of confusion even after the explanation, he said how about $8, I said great! I think they have an AWESOME business model especially during this pandemic. Kate's Plant-based ice cream (vegan) - OMG, absolutely the best dairy-free ice cream I have ever had!!!! I really couldn't even tell it was dairy-free. If only they were local to me. I would be eating their ice cream every day!!!! I was super happy to find this farmers market, being both gluten-free and dairy-free can be hard and this place was perfect for me.

Running Sundays from 10-2, this small market features an impressive variety and selection for its size: Missionary Chocolates, Spiritopia Liquors, various food vendors including bakers, coffee, and such, fresh flowers (all the dahlias!), and several produce stands, one of which sold the best dang crispy tart apples I have ever eaten (I didn't get the name of the apples OR the seller, curses!). Both fellow shoppers and vendors were friendly and kind, everyone seeming to enjoy themselves. Parking was pretty challenging (surprise, surprise), but we eventually found a spot, and it was not too terribly far. This is really a neighborhood farmers market, but I had a great time (and wish I lived in the area so I could shop here with regularity).

Many times I've seen it and many times I've avoided it. But now I regret not checking it out the first time they opened up a few years ago. Here's a few tips and details: * Parking * Most folks park in the New Seasons parking lot, or down the residential streets. The times I've been here, the lot has never been full. So I've never had any issue finding parking. * Favorite Vendors * ~ The Pie Guy - out of North Plains. If you yelp that, you'll see why he's different. Love their variety of pies. ~ Pilgrim's Roasted Nut'z - Another North Plains favorite! You can literally go nuts buying more than one bag. ~ Kookido - UGH, mochi-filled cookies! I'm a mochi lover and chewy soft cookie kind of guy. These are heaven in a container! ~ Pablo Munoz Fruits - I'm all about their peaches and berries! ~ Martinez Family Farms - Come here early for these guys. They always have a long line to pay. ~ Favorite Produce - I dig their fresh flower bouquets. ~ Helvetia Vineyards & Winery - Another local wine favorite. Try a sample! ~ Baird Family Orchards - mmm mmm, gotta love them peaches! Especially their Sweet Sue yellow peaches. ~ Our Little Farm and Nursery - Haven't bought anything from these guys, but they're the ones that freshly roast peppers. People love'em! ~ Slow Rise Bakehouse - Located out of Forest Grove. Check out my ROTD for them ;) ~ Thompson Farms - The "pear guy"! He's picking bosc pears soon. I cannot wait! ~ Papa's Sunflower Seeds - Flavored roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds. These are the guys that do team fundraising. ~ Ochoas Catering & Events - Necessito burrito! They wrap up fat burritos (and more) and their salsas are simply el mejor! For the most part, if it's a hot summer day, the market can close a bit early due to excessive heat. I've yet to go here on a rainy day. But in closing for my next visit, I'm trying the pasta lady, the hot sauce guy, and the fresh mini donuts. Oh and the mouthful momo stand. Support your locals folks!

It's a good opportunity to support local and small. Parking wasn't an issue as there is desinated parking areas in apartment lots in front of the market. My favorite part was the local food vendors! We grabbed momos (delicious), tacos (best tacos in Oregon in my opinion), and hummus. HIGHLIGHT OF MY WEEKEND! S/O to Ochoa Catering and Events and Hummus Spot for putting my partner and I in our taco and hummus era. The service from these vendors were great and it was fun chatting about how their business started. Orenco Station - Hillsboro market is laid back and a good break from the hustle and bustle of city life. We will be back!
