They are SUPER helpful when it comes to asking the right questions and getting you the product that you need, even for small home renovations and fix-its that you want to try doing yourself. The paint guy is SO nice and had very helpful suggestions, (as well as trying to help me stay in my budget). The people out in the garden section ACTUALLY helped me pick out a plant I have not yet killed, and really everywhere. Even the owner will help you out. And they have so much more than just hardware, the gift stuff is great, lots of style and variety, I could look at their stuff for a while. There's even a cute kids' section. Everyone in my Decatur neighborhood swears by this place, and they earn it. read more

Terrible customer service and blatantly dishonest! The owner, Dave, refused to give me a refund for the brand new, unused items I purchased just 4 days before, citing a make believe "no return on winter merchandise" policy. First the cashier told me the policy was on the receipt, which it is not. Then Dave says there was probably a sign on the door about it, which there was not. I have a call into corporate for their help but this business is absolutely discriminatory and makes policies as they please depending on who you are or how much money is at stake. Do yourself a favor and just go to Lowes or HD. They would never get away with treating people like this or make up random "policies" as it benefits them and their wallet. read more

I had a really bad experience here today. I ordinarily love this store, despite the higher prices, because they have a great selection. Today I came with my 5 year old son who is mildly autistic and sometimes difficult to manage. Outside in the garden he started climbing on some rock lawn ornaments. I told him to get down and he wasn't listening to me. A man working outdoors reprimanded him as well and I told him to stop, that now he was getting in trouble. He did, and that was fine. Then as I was checking out, my son was looking at some metal sculptures by the door. I told him to be careful with them, that they might be fragile. The same man who had reprimanded him before said, "Yeah, your babysitter says be careful with those." I said, "Oh, I'm not his babysitter, I'm his mother." He said, "You sure don't act like it." I couldn't believe it. It was one of the rudest, most hurtful things anyone has ever said to me. I said he obviously wasn't a parent. I was very upset. He said, "Ma'am could you please not yell?" I told him what he'd said to me was unbelievably rude. He asked how I could tell he wasn't a parent and I said if he had been a parent then he wouldn't have spoken to me in that way. I dropped my stuff and left. When I got home I called the manager. He said he was sorry but that children at Ace use it like their own personal playground, and that when his kids were growing up they knew not to touch anything. He said he hoped they'd have my business again, but I won't be back. Children don't seem to be very welcome there. I asked him to reprimand the man who had insulted me, and he said he'd say something, but I shouldn't have had to ask. He should have offered it. And honestly, someone who says things like that should probably be fired. read more

Seriously, go here next time you have to buy a gift for someone and don't know what to get. Of course they have regular hardware store stuff and a good selection of gardening equipment and plants, but the whole center portion of the store is dedicated to unique gifty items you won't find anywhere else in town. They have cool cooking gadgets, funky/frivolous items for the chef in your life, bartending/cocktail accessories, decorative items for the home--both interior and exterior, and lots more. I'm a huge fan of this little hardware store that could. It doesn't have the selection or the hours of the big box down the street, but what it does have--service, charm, personality--absolutely blows the competition away. I can usually count on seeing the same faces when I walk in and I can rely on at least 2 or 3 people asking me if they can help me find something. And when you do ask, it's not like they're trying to get rid of you like a hot potato. They're friendly and knowledgeable, and yes, extremely helpful. The best part is you really don't need a hardware excuse to stop in. This Ace Hardware actually tops my list of favorite places to browse for small gifts or stocking stuffers. They stock a fun selection of house wares and knick knacks for when you need to show some appreciation for the cook, cleaner, or gardener in your life. And last tip if you care, they stock Benjamin Moore paints. Oh so handy. read more

I had originally gone to Home Depot for a front door knob before getting frustrated with their (lack of) customer service. I remembered Ace so went there. Talked to Tony, and he was in the process of ordering me a door knob, and asked why I was replacing it. when I told him my issue was the door was hard to open, he told me to just replace the latch. Saved me more than $100! This place is great, and they have a loyal customer for life! read more

Hey, if you need a screw, you'll get one here. You'll also find Tokyo Milk soap and Big Green Eggs. The staff is incredible, a real tribute to Tony, the extremely visible owner. Don't go looking for something. Ask somebody. There's always somebody to ask. Odds are he or she will know exactly where it is and get it for you. Prices are good and the autographed baseball bat collection is awesome. You will rarely need to go to Lowe's or Home Depot ever again once you've started shopping at Intown. Over the course of about 3 days, I've been installing new equipment in my car, and utilizing the services of Ace Hardware quite a bit. However, there was one incident in which I was so impressed, that I had to post a positive review. The other day, I had just been in the store and had Tony, one of the owners, help me with some "creative" needs. He helped put together a selection of hardware and tools, and I was quickly out the door. A few hours later, however, I ended up lacking about 3 more screws for a large project. I drove back to the store and walked up to the door as employees were leaving; they had been closed for 45 minutes by this point. Tony, however, saw me there and asked what I needed. When I explained I had just a few pieces remaining, he walked me to the section to get what I needed, and since the registers were down, he said not to worry about the charge for them. Now granted, altogether they probably wouldn't cost me more than a dollar, and certainly no more than a dime for the store, it was still *amazing* that he allowed me to come in and get what I needed *so long* after they'd already been closed. Now, is this something you can expect to happen? Certainly not. However, that this *did* happen, is astounding enough that I felt the need to write a review about it... Thank you, Tony. It's too bad that such a cool store has to be staffed with rude garden people. Why do you have to be snotty? Why do you have to think the customers trying to get one over from you when they bring you back something that's obviously defective? Wow- what happened to this store? Incredibly rude workers and manager, not to mention the lack of knowledge about simple matters AND overpricing of everything! This used to be one of my favorite places before I moved to Colorado but it has gone down hill in the last two years. I love this store's convenient location to my home, BUT I've yet to tell them what I need for a project and have them give me the correct item. Everytime I have to go, I plan on two trips: 1) to purchase the item, and 2) to have to bring it back. My husband does contracting and has given me exact descriptions with drawings of the items he needs....and still. Also, they've dropped their entire line of wonderful decorative houseware items that drew me there. But when you need to run to "the corner store" for a washer or a bolt, make sure you bring a sample of what you need and match it up exactly. Otherwise they're willingness to help (and they do have that, I grant you) will result in your not getting exactly what you needed the first trip around. One other important thing is that their prices are very, very high. read more

I wrote a review about 5 or 6 months ago about the service I received or rather the absolute disdain that one of the owner showed towards my wife and I when we asked him about replacing some plants we had purchased there a few weeks before which had died after planting. I wasn't expecting him to give me something for nothing, but for him to at least to deal with the situation with a degree of civility. Curiously that review disappeared. Here it is again: "My wife and i discovered this Ace Hardware after about a year or so of living in Decatur ,and were very pleased with the store in general. Well laid out, interesting products, a garden shop with some more esoteric varieties than your usual big box store and good, well intentioned customer service. Pricing is a bit steep on some items, but for the most part reasonable Unfortunately after my last experience there I will never buy anything there again. My wife and I purchased about $400-500 worth of plants to landscape our yard , planted them with care, kept them watered and fertilized, but despite that 4 of them died and in each case it was one of two or three of the same variety planted adjacent to the ones which lived. When we returned to Ace we spoke with the owner, Tony, explained clearly what had happened and asked if they was anything that they were willing to do to help us out.. The response, a flat out "No". "My vendors don't give me a warranty, therefore I can't give you one." When I told him we had purchased $400-500 worth of plants this spring, his response was, "well I buy thousands of dollars worth of plants". OK and your point is what, Tony? Ahh I get it, take it or leave it. So we choose to leave it and not return. Good luck." read more

Ace Hardware tried to scam me out $400. I went to this location to buy a grill that was only available at this store. When I get to the store I was told that the grill I wanted was on the shelf. I go over and it's marked as the one I wanted. I also dropped another $70 on a portable cart for said grill. Long story short I got home and put everything together and the grill did not mount properly. I called Weber for help and gave them the serial number. I was told the grill I bought was obsolete and was not being sold anymore. I thought they were mistaken and told the operator that all the labels were correct but she insisted it was the obsolete model. Once she directed me to the owners manual I realized that Ace had labeled and priced this as a new model and just changed the labels from a new model to one that is longer manufactured. I will never use these scam artists again. Even when I drove back (40 miles) I was asked to wait 10 minutes until someone would help me. once I finally spoke to the manager he did not believe me until I showed him. From their beautiful nursery plants to their stock of "everything under the sun" hardware items, there are so many reasons to love this Ace Hardware. The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable and willing to help. Over the last few years, it has become my go-to gift store. They have a great selection of Green Egg & grilling gadgets, rubs, spices, mixes, etc. Need kitchen gadgets, linens, aprons, mugs, cards, etc - this is the place. I've purchased unique jewelry, candles and soaps for gifts. Need a hip outfit or bag - they've got that too. I loose track of time when I'm in this place. My kids love it too - free popcorn while you shop and candy or ice-cream for the road. Due yourself and favor, visit this place and you'll be a fan too. Tips: They tend to be super busy on sunny Saturday/ Sundays. Extra parking is available in the lot next door (think it's also parking for an urgent care facility). read more

I have always liked this place. It's easy to find help when you need it, and I love the vast selection of other products besides "hardware". I decided to write a review because of the outstanding service I received from Jerry when I was in the market to buy a Big Green Egg. He spoke to me on the phone first and answered all my questions, based on our conversation I knew I was going to buy the Egg at Ace. He was also in the store when I came in to buy. He again answered all my questions, had great suggestions and instructions and set up everything I needed. It was a gift for my husband and even though I'm sure he has sold tons of Green Eggs, he shared my excitement and really made the whole experience more positive than I can express. Thanks to him, I was able to pull off my surprise and this store had a great package deal on the Egg. I'm really happy and plan to stop in more often because of my positive experience. read more

I just had a terrible experience at the Ace Hardware. I needed some help installing a water filter that I purchased at a big box store. The owner ask me where I had purchased the water filter. I told him. He then stated "Oh you purchased the filter from an other store and now you want me to help you install it". I went directly to the front and asked to talk to a manager. The same person, who I felt was very rude, appeared and announced that he was the owner. Before this experience, I would have given the store 5. Today I am giving the store a 1. I have decided to vote with my money. I will not spend my money with this owner again! I am so disappointed. read more

I grew up around this Ace Hardware and have been going since I was a kid. Now, I own a home nearby and still love to shop here. Tony, the owner, even worked with us on creating a custom wedding registry. We knew we wanted to skip the registries at big box stores in favor of supporting a local business that didn't require shipping. We built the registry on a third-party site online and Tony kept a list of the items in the store for local guests to swing by or for out of town guests to call and order. Terrible experience tonight. I went in to the store to select some paint chips to paint a bedroom. After looking at the paint samples for about 15 minutes, I decided to pull the trigger on a Benjamin Moore color. The woman helping me was very nice through the mixing of the paint. She then put a sample of the paint on a piece of paper for me and dried it. Once it dried it was much browner than the color I had chosen. The color I chose was called Sea Haze, there is no brown in this color. She became very irritated and short with me and handed me off to her manager who admitted it was not a match. I did not want them to mix another can nor did they want to. I was very pleasant through the whole transaction so I can't understand why this paint girl was so angry and couldn't admit it wasn't what I wanted. I explained to the manager I'm not upset that its not a match but more upset about the delivery from the paint girl and her unpleasant manner. His excuse for her was that she's from New York. You can't run a business like that. I asked for the owners phone number or email. I've sent an email but it has been returned undeliverable. read more
