This review is long overdue but I think of Vahan and Elen and the team so often and how they not…read moreonly saved my precious photos but were so kind, efficient and professional during my hard drive nightmare scenario... One week before xmas, I sat down to work and got a message and screen I'd never seen before - "no bootable devices found". I called my usual tech guys and they came over a few hours later but needed to take the drive to their shop. Of course, with the holidays, no one was working much and as much as I like my usual guys, I felt like I was getting the run-around and I wasn't getting any answers from them, they couldn't tell me what was wrong. I'm self-employed and do a ton of work over the holidays, so my anxiety and frustration increased hourly...I did get a new HD in the meantime, but I was very concerned about the data (and esp photos) on my failed HD. I found Five Star Data Recovery here on Yelp, I spoke to Elen and went to collect my failed HD from the other place and bring it to them. From the gate, I got updates every day or two and come to find out that it was the controller in my WD HD that had malfunctioned (Vahan is so wonderful in explaining the issues to a layperson!) and although there is a company that makes the little part to perform a "chip off" and therefore recover the data, there is not one yet for my make/model HD. However! As I still had my HD from previous to the one that failed, which had all of my pre-2020 photos on it (plus old docs, etc), Vahan was easily able to copy all of that over to a new external HD and I can't explain the relief and happiness that it brought me :-) I'm eager to come back when/if the little part for the chip off process becomes available for my failed HD, but in the meantime I'm just so happy to have my photos and eternally grateful to Vahan and team! Highly recommended. Crashed an internal hard drive that had significant data on it that I had,…read moreirresponsibly, not backed up to any other sources. The damage I did to the drive required Five Star's clean-room service, and they quoted a flat rate to me in advance. The effort of recovering the data ended up being very challenging and took longer than any of us expected, but at the end Five Star was able to recover over 99% of the files--and I'm happy to say, the 1% of files were not important to me, so the 99% they recovered covered everything I needed. Despite that significant extra work, they invoiced me only for the original quoted amount. I'm happy with the results but also the professionalism. When I first reached out to Five Star, they got back to me at the start of the next business day and, after answering a few follow-up questions, I had a quote and scheduled to drop off my drive the same day. Vahan and Elen were particularly helpful and professional the entire way through. It was really a pleasure to work with them and I can't recommend Five Star enough!

I shut off my computer, went to Yelp and was happy to find someone who specializes in Apple/Mac. I then asked my La Canada Flintridge friends and one person endorsed him whole-heartedly. I called Jack and lucky for me he said to come over in a couple of hours. He has a nice, bright office next to his house, not far from the freeway exit for Trader Joe's. He's so easy to work with--smart, personable and clear. He knew exactly what needed to be done. I have a backup service, but having done a backup install before, I knew that would take days. Jack took care of everything and had my laptop back to me that same day. There is nothing like the security of knowing your computer is only in the hands of one trustworthy person instead of sitting in a backroom, handed off to someone you've never spoken to. Also, Jack is an authorized Apple tech and his fees are fair. He also helped me choose the right router (I was about to buy something I would have regretted). I have told all my Mac friends about him so I thought I should get around to posting here. Two things you should know: 1) Be sure to call first, he only sees people by appointment and 2) He takes cash and checks, no credit cards. If you have a Mac, this is your guy.

But what really impressed me was how Garnik actually took the time to explain everything instead of just doing the work and handing it back. He didn't just slap on new thermal paste and call it done. He properly reapplied the paste, then noticed my fan configuration was all wrong and moved everything to the correct CPU pump headers and fan headers. He walked me through exactly what was causing the thermal problems and how he fixed them, then stress tested the whole system right in front of me so I could see it was running properly. Garnik was super knowledgeable, friendly, and got everything done way faster than I expected. It's honestly rare to find someone who knows their stuff this well and actually takes the time to make sure you understand what's going on with your build.
