In fact, wandering through here I thought it was a pretty interesting place, and it does focus on the Roman history, which was around something like 2000 years ago, and it is mindboggling to somebody who comes from Australia. Based in an old print works near the sea front in Margate, Crate's building has been bought and refurbished with major support from Arts Council England South East, East Kent Partnership and Thanet District Council. The building opened in July 2006. The building combines working and project space and is designed to give artists access to dedicated, affordable space for experimentation, production, documentation and research. There are three floors of studios, and two project spaces on the ground floor. The project spaces are available for short-term use by practitioners, alongside a programme initiated by Crate.

Laid out in…read moreorder, it takes you through from the Romans to World War II, including special displays on Christopher Marlowe and Joseph Conrad, and has plenty of fascinating archaeological finds, clear, interesting explanatory panels and a few simple interactive activities for kids (although, who doesn't want to know their name in runes?). There's also a bit of info about the Poor Priests' Hospital building that the museum now occupies, interspersed throughout. For kids, there's the Rupert Bear Museum and an exhibit on Bagpuss, but I didn't really see those bits properly. In a city where the tourist attractions all give you a bit of history it was great to get all the different stories into perspective at this museum.

As…read moreyou walk around it you learn the history of Roman Canterbury and then a major part looks at the building of Canterbury Cathedral and the martyrdom of Thomas Becket. There are also sections on Joseph Conrad and Rupert Bear. It always holds the children's interest and it is worth visiting when they hold temporary exhibitions or workshops, often exploring Roman, or historical Canterbury.

I won't go into it's background as other reviews have already mentioned, just updating that as of September 2023 admission is £17 for adults, free for children under 17, and local students, and discounted 20% for English Heritage members. Audio tours are £5 to rent, guidebooks are £10 for purchase. Hours are Mon-Sat 9AM to 5PM and Sun 11:30AM to 5PM, with last admissions an hour prior to closing. This is a working church so they have services and special events do check their website before you book. Interesting enough the single ticket is valid for 12 months so you may revisit within the year if you would like, I guess that accounts for the higher price of admission compared to some other cathedrals, maybe also bc there are currently renovations being done to the exterior of one of the main towers. The town of Canterbury has a walkable (about a 15 min walk from edge to edge of city center), pedestrian friendly main thoroughfare with lots of shops and restaurants, if there was one thing I wished coming on a brief day trip to a couple places, was that I got a couple more hours to walk around and explore the town, after spending about 45 minutes inside the cathedral itself.

The location is awesome although a little hard to get to if you're not familiar with the city as it's no car zone. You're able to walk around the cathedral by yourself at night as long as a guests has access to it.
