Everything went well. We have been waiting for baby for a long time. We did IVF and was able to follow doctors orders and recommendations throughout the entire process. For anyone starting off on the IVF journey, it can be long, arduous, confusing, scary, and downright frustrating. It's a complicated process that involves many known and unknown factors all of which have to be dealt with in order to have a successful outcome. Finding the right IVF doctor and team is THE MOST crucial factor in achieving that success. Having IVF Hawaii to guide us through the journey is what made all the difference for us. First of all, he truly cares. He tells us, "I am sorry" even though he did everything he could on that cycle but for one reason or another the try didn't work. Imagine being on a ship, sailing along to one's destination until rough waters are hit and the voyage encounters stormy seas. One of the first things that may set in is panic. Then the captain, through his experience and expertise, along with his crew, smoothly and swiftly quells the fear that sets in by gently and expertly navigating the ship through the storm and the warmth of the crew is able to help calm one's fears. "What happened" were the first words Dr. Chun had said when we had our consultation with him. Being taken aback by his statement, I said "I don't know." My husband and I are so thankful to have gone with IVF Hawaii. We were recommended to see Dr. Chun based on multiple success stories from our friends and acquaintances. The entire staff is amazing, nice, professional, and accommodating- Gen, Marcie, Lorene, Christie, Carol, and Sarah. Gen is awesome at instruction for the injections. I found it helpful to film the instructions. Lorene is informative, writes out a calendar of everything and answers any questions that I have; if she cannot, Dr. Chun always calls back later that day. Everything was explained clearly in terms of procedures and the costs. If ever I had questions of costs, Cindy always broke it down for me. With all healthcare services, you are your strongest advocate...so if you don't know something, ask; if you are unsure, ask again; write everything down too-with different supplements, hormones and emotions, it's easy to forget the details. Dr. Chun also explained different options of IUI vs. IVF and broke down our percentages and possibilities of getting pregnant. He's also very straight-forward, honest, and realistic, which...for IVF...I didn't need things sugar coated. Dr. Chun also had excellent deductive reasoning to our issues with pregnancy, identifying that I had endometriosis, thyroid issues and other hormonal imbalances. Thus, his screening is very thorough. It does help if you are a good historian of your medical history to help him conclude how to get your body to be the most fit environment for the baby. Also, just an FYI, he is not a fan of his patients eating sugar and advises and restricts your diet to optimize a healthy environment before and after the transplant. Believe me....he'll scold you and give you that Asian parent look of disappointment if you eat a donut!!! I think in general, when doing IVF, even though insurance covers one, you just have to go into this path knowing you're going to invest in a lot of money. You can't complain over a higher cost of one procedure or maybe paying a copay when you thought you didn't-this causes unwarranted stress which your body just doesn't need-Because in the end, isn't it worth it once you get your miracle baby?!?! Some of my friends went to other IVF clinics, which on paper were rated higher, got better social media reviews or didn't charge for a consultation and unfortunately they did not have success. I recommend people to do the genetic testing of the embryos if they have the financial resources. My husband and I did and we are grateful to have done it since we found out only a few were rated high; if we didn't do it, the chance of implanting a "bad" embryo could have been high and to deal with the constant miscarriages could have been more emotionally challenging. Yes the test is expensive....but it's worth it. After I was in the "safe zone" Dr. Chun transferred me to Dr. Jen Beair's care, who he said would be delivering my baby. At first you have a little bit of separation anxiety like "what Dr. Chun?!?! You're not going to deliver my baby!?!?!" But Dr. Beair is amazing-very sweet, professional, compassionate, and knowledgeable. I love that she's very evidence-based and rational. Because she is a part of IVF Hawaii, she also has the convenience to discuss with Dr. Chun anything about your case. First, let me start by saying that Dr. Chun is a highly respected expert in his field, and I have the highest respect for his medical skills and knowledge. We had a highly satisfying experience at IVF Hawaii from a purely medical point of view. Dr. Chun himself is the only reason I give this clinic two stars instead of one. This being said, unfortunately I would not recommend this clinic to anyone, because of the following reasons: 1. Disorganized nurse and staff: - Overall, we thought that many things regarding the procedure were not explained clearly to us, and the nurse kept forgetting to mention important aspects. For instance, on the first day of the IVF cycle, we realized that the nurse forgot to write a prescription for an antibiotic that I had to take. In fact, she completely forgot to mention that I had to take this antibiotic at all. As a result, we had to bother Dr. Chun on a Sunday morning. 2. Unprofessional behavior from the nurse and staff: - The nurse was being very pushy when she asked us to sign the consent forms. I told her that I wanted to have a copy of the forms and read them at home before signing them, and she seemed quite upset about that. - The nurse kept insisting that I sign a form consenting for genetic testing of the embryos, even if at the time we hadn't decided to do it. I told her that I didn't want to sign a form agreeing to something we weren't sure we wanted to do, and she told me in a rather rude way that I had to sign the form but I could change my mind later. Tell me, would you sign a form saying you have to buy a house even if the seller tells you you can change your mind later? Enough said... - After the procedure, I left a message at the clinic for the nurse to call me back because I had a few questions. I was then told that the nurse did not want to speak with me because she was upset about the fact that I ask too many questions. (?!?) We feel that they are part of our ohana because we endured a lot and their concern and attention got us through it. We were successful in our goal of starting our family. Prior to IVF Hawaii we were unsuccessful with another clinic and suffered a miscarriage. Our family experienced the pain, struggle, and heartache that goes along with infertility and endometriosis. Dr. Chun's expertise, knowledge, honesty, and humor was refreshing and so needed. At our first meeting, my husband and I knew that his confidence, candor, and strictness were some of the reasons for the favorable referral we received from a friend. She herself didn't see Dr. Chun, but others she knew did and they all swore the same thing - that he is the BEST! After feeling comfortable sharing my story with family, friends and some colleagues, I realized that there are so many people that have seen Dr. Chun and have such wonderful things to say. His questions and observations were on point and shows why he is a leader in his field! He will be strict with you about no sugar in your diet. LISTEN and don't ask for any exceptions like I did!! Dr. Beair is sweet, caring and competent. We always feel at ease with her. Such a compassionate and attentive professional. After seeing Dr. Chun for the IVF process, I was hesitant to have someone else deliver our baby. However, he and Dr. Beair work so well together that we felt the constant care from both of them during our entire pregnancy. It's great that they are in the same practice/office so they can easily consult and confer with each other. Dr. Beair was so calm during the delivery that even though it was a stressful time, I can recall her smile and encouraging remarks and demeanor. Cyndi and Lorene were excellent in explaining the processes, calendars, costs and answering our questions. They were also very helpful with my doctors notes for work. I especially appreciated the attention they gave to us when we were in front of them. I know and have experienced other doctors' offices where I felt rushed or a bother. I had some bleeding at about 22 weeks and was recommended to do a cerclage which we did. I bled again 2 weeks later in which I was admitted to the hospital. Each month after that until I gave birth, I went to the hospital for bleeding. I was recommended to do progesterone shots which both my husband and I feel was responsible for us making it to 35 weeks. We were scared and anxious when the neonatologist came to have a conversation about the reality and risks if we gave birth that early. However, by the grace of God, prayers, continued care of all the staff at IVF Hawaii and Kapiolani MCWC we were able to give birth at 35 weeks and able to bring our little one home four days later! We highly recommend IVF Hawaii! We know the emotions that you are going through. Every family has their own journey to take but we wholeheartedly believe that IVF Hawaii is a wonderful team and hope that others will be able to experience the same guidance and blessing that we have. Dr. Benton Chun is exceptional in what he does. Not only him but his staff as well. They are on top of everything for your prenatal, OBGYN, IVF needs. I was referred to him by my primary care physician to get the usual girly check up. He basically told me that I either am going to like him or I'm not. From those words alone I was scared to meet this guy. But why in the hell would my PCP refer me to this guy? He continued to tell me his first encounter with Dr. Chun while completing his residency. My PCP is very serious and straight to the point and tells me with his serious, straight face...."Dr. Chun is the best in the state". My interpretation, Dr. Chun is the Master. Finally the meeting and check up time had arrived. Not knowing what to expect by hearing my PCP's story I expected him to come in breaking down doors barking all the things I should not do. It was totally not what I expected. He quickly made me feel at ease. Fast forward to 4 months.... I took a home pregnancy test and it came out "Pregnant" Whooo!!! Dr. Chun confirmed the pregnancy and took care of me throughout the whole entire prenatal care. Another doctor works along side Dr. Chun named Dr. Kelly Yamasato, MD. The day of my C-Section I was fortunate to get a package deal of both Dr. Chun and Dr. Yamasato which took AWESOME care of me. I was told that when Dr. Chun gives orders people don't jump, they run. Knowing that and go through my monthly to weekly prenatal check ups made me feel that I was in good hands. He definitely took care of me. Coming from a spouse's/father's point of view, IVF Hawaii and their entire staff are hands down the best at what they do. The entire process of in vitro is as complicated and specific as you can imagine, but IVF Hawaii makes the process manageable for both husband and wife because there was no way my wife and I could remember everything we needed to do. They answered all my questions with sincerity, gave me the best possible advice, and most of all never gave up on us. My wife and I had numerous failed attempts but with every failure, the staff comforted us as if we were a part of their own family. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Dr. Benton Chun made every effort, and I mean EVERY effort, to be there for us for the entire process and through the birth of our child. He has a great way of balancing being strict and comforting at the same time. My wife and I always knew he meant business, but would always have time to hear our concerns and make us feel at ease either with an opinion or with a laugh. Last, but not least, the staff was Outstanding! We personally dealt with Lorene, Cindy, Genevieve, Pauline, and Marcy, but they have more personnel and they all have a part and they all do their part well. He was highly recommended by a friend who got pregnant with her first IVF procedure. It didn't happen as quickly for us. It took 4 IUI and 4 IVF procedures before we got our precious little blessing. Throughout the whole process, Dr. Chun and his staff were extremely professional and efficient. They were warm and friendly at the same time. They always made us feel comfortable and accommodated our scheduling needs. From the office visits to the delivery room, we knew we were in good hands. We could've gone to other specialists after our failed attempts, but we stayed with Dr. Chun because we believed in him and we had faith that he would be able to help us. He did such a great job that I switched doctors and he is now my OBGYN. I now go to him and Dr. Kelly Yamasato for "regular" OBGYN matters. I will begin this long overdue review by saying DO NOT select a fertility specialist by the reviews you see on Yelp. Initially, I did exactly that - I selected the IVF clinic that seemed the have the greatest number of positive Yelp reviews, and that led me down a difficult and exasperating experience. What did that teach me? To do my own research on assisted reproductive technology (ART), to search the CDC's website for ART success rates per fertility clinic, as well as to seek stories from friends about their own infertility experiences, and to hear what their experiences with their doctors were. That research, my friends' recommendations, their anectodal stories, and my own experiences at another clinic is what led me to Dr. Benton Chun and to IVF Hawaii. I anticipated someone stoic, strict, and judgmental, but the man I met was stoic yet warm, firm yet encouraging, and very, very patient. This medical professional, his practice and his staff all deserve the highest of praise. So I say again, don't select IVF Hawaii based on its glowing reviews on Yelp. Research ART, its processes and how it relates to you, your age and your circumstances. Look at the CDC's website for fertility (ART) success rates and compare ALL the fertility clinics in Hawaii. Look at the statistics with a critical eye (all statistics can be manipulated to a certain extent) and how the facts relate to you. Apart from success rates, look for education, experience, patience and compassion in your doctor. Don't let the flash of a fancy office or fast, slick talk confuse you. Dr. Benton Chun and his staff are the best. From the day we entered his care, we knew we were in the best hands. In our struggle to become parents, we could not have trusted a more professional and caring staff. We knew we were well taken care of from his receptionist to nurses. Lorene walked us through each step of IVF, Cindy kept us updated and Dr. Chun ensured I was at optimal health. (He has the best staff!) It is because of his knowledge, care, and professionalism that we are parents of a healthy toddler today. Dealing with infertility is not easy, nor is going through an IVF cycle. My wife and I spent months at three different infertility specialists before going to IVF HAWAII. He was very honest about my chances and I appreciated that from him. He is truly the best doctor I ever had! I love all the staff and nurses too! My husband and I decided to visit Dr. Chun and his team after we've read some good reviews on this site. We couldn't see him on the first consultation but Lorene explained very well about the steps we are going to take to get pregnant trough IVF. After that we decided to try IVF since that is the only way for us to have a baby. His team was always nice and had smiles on their faces every visit we had. But since Dr. Chun is one of the best, his office gets busy and sometimes we had to wait for a while. So I recommend you have enough time to wait just in case. We tried IVF once but I couldn't get pregnant. Then, we tried Embryo transfer and got pregnant. Now, we have a perfect little girl who just turned one years old. Simply, without Dr. Chun and his team, we wouldn't be here with our baby today. They have complete schedules to follow and take many supplements to get your body ready, so some people say he is a perfectionist and I thank him for that. Sometimes those schedules and all the supplements or injections could be stressful. However, it is worth it. Just to hold your own baby in your arms in the future. When I got pregnant, Lorene and Dr. Chun looked truly happy for us and I'll never forget the warmth that I felt when he said " look at the little gummy bear's heart beating during the ultrasound and It was a long way to come and congratulations" while he is holding my hand. To me, he wasn't the most talkative or enthusiastic doctor at times and he only spent short amounts of time with me which made me nervous or question stuff sometimes but both times that I couldn't get pregnant and I got pregnant, he was very supportive and caring which showed who he really is. My husband and I were referred to Dr. Chun by my regular OBGYN. We had been trying for some time to get pregnant. We were very nervous about our consultation, so scared we would hear bad news. Our fertility journey has been a very challenging one and such a roller coaster of emotions over these past 8 years. Just 6 months before my 40th birthday, we decided to try IVF one last time with Dr Benton Chun after referrals from friends, and all we can say is that Dr Chun is a rockstar! After a previous IVF attempt with another doctor, we had given up on all hope of having children together. Dr Chun was able to help us to make my dream come true of becoming a mother and on 5/12/16 we delivered healthy preemie twin boys!! The infertility road is a hard one that challenges your relationship, your spirit, your physical and emotional health, and most of all forces you to cling to faith (no matter your beliefs) when all hope seems lost. I was referred to Dr. Chun by my PCP because I am having a hard time getting pregnant. My very first appointment and we were late! When we walked in I thought they were going to say "I'm sorry but you missed your appointment." it was nowhere near that! The staff is extremely friendly and one of the nurses even scheduled my next appointment a little later because she also comes from mililani and understands how the morning rush hour traffic is. Awesome! I nervously waited for Dr. Chun. When he walked into the room he automatically says something which makes me laugh! He's such a great doctor, easy to talk to which is important in cases like mine and he eliminated all my anxiety. I'm hoping he can become my regular OB/GYN. My insurance plan (HMSA HMO) at the moment restricts me from going where I would like to go...I only have 1 year with Dr. Chun since my PCP put in a request with my insurance provider. I'm hoping there's something else we can do so I may keep seeing him. The regular OB I was seeing seemed so careless the last time I went there. He was miserably sick and 3 hours late!! read more
