First off the cigarette smoke smell is so over bearing it makes you gag, the food was bland at best and is giving me stomach pains tonight. I came hear with a group. I had no say in the matter. I was reluctant after reading reviews. Only one room, half of which is smoking. The only divider is that imaginary line that was banished long ago from airlines. Hate cigarette smoke? Don't go. Fast drinks (and good), slow food (30 minutes or more). I never give bad reviews, but I'm afraid this was the worst meal I've had here in Fairbanks! I ordered the onion soup, based on a local's recommendation. I was definitely disappointed! Very little broth. When I got to the bottom there was a whole slice of the root of an onion! Not something you expect. On the plus side, they used red onions, which was nice. I followed the soup with crab stuffed mushrooms. They had to be the worst mushrooms I've ever had! I have never had crab taste fishy, but if there was actually crab in these mushrooms it had to be mixed with some bad fish! So disappointed! Came here because the locals said it was really good! Sometimes they can be super busy and not have any seats. That can be disappointing if you drive all the way out there and it's hugely busy. The other downside is if you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, they have a non smoking area and a smoking area in a big open area. It's usually ok if no one is smoking though. We popped by for burgers the other week. It was GREAT!!!! I love the fact their steak fries are actual potatoes hand cut into steak fry chunks and fried. The burger was also just perfect- not at all dry, but properly cooked and juicy. I had the mushroom Swiss- I am also enamored by the fact they grill the onions with the mushrooms for that burger. Delicious flavors! The servers were SO super nice. Again, we never seem to make it to dinner during a normal hour on the weekend, so it was later towards the end of the shift, yet our server and the other who were working were both friendly, outgoing, and pleasant. I can't recommend anything else on the menu... the service was pretty slow even with only three tables of customers. My water had floating particles in it but I didn't notice until after I was done. Ivory Jack's remains the heart of the Goldstream community. Great beer & drink selection, and good space for socializing or private conversations. Food is mostly standard frozen and fried bar&grill food, but it's prepared with love. Generally great, personable service. It's one of the remaining few Fairbanks' restaurants with indoor smoking. Several big TVs for sports. The BBQ chicken sandwich I had recently was cooked perfectly, tender & moist. Good sweet potato fries and onion rings. The large Hawaiian pizza was tasty, good crust, great flavorful sauce and good toppings...but a bit pricy at $29. However the dining area and bathrooms are pretty grungy, so I wonder about the kitchen. Also, they could take down half of the sports memorabilia and liquor signs and the walls would still be overcrowded! read more

Ivory Jacks has gone down hill 100%. I came in with a party of 11 served drinks in which the glasses smelled, we ordered and waited an hour and a half. We finally got up and left and on the way out the waitress stated we have been having issues. The waitress was making a salad touching her face, running her fingers threw her hair and continued to make our salad bare handed. This place use to be spot on and fun. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone now. The place really has taken a turn for the worst. read more

I was looking for an epic burger, and after a search on Yelp took me to two closed places, I decided to ask the owner of the college area bookstore, Gulliver's Travels, which apparently, undergraduates never darken. (C'mon kids!) Brian said that his favorite place was a ways out, but it was a great day for a drive on a beautiful summer day. About 5.5 miles from my start I arrived at a big barn-like building with lots of cars in the parking lot. First good sign. There's a liquor store attached to the building, and it is also a bar: the kind I would have spent hours in during my drinking days. The only ding I can think of is that smoking is allowed in the place, and I could see even smoke coming from behind the bar. I was lucky to find a table next to an open window, so it wasn't too bad. The menu is extensive, ranging from sandwiches, steaks, pizza, and yes, burgers. Half pound ones and quarter pound ones, many with bacon they season there. I'm not sure what that means, but I had to try it. Unfortunately the smoke makes this a deal breaker for me, but if you don't mind it, the burgers are great! read more

They claim to have separate dining areas for smoking and non-smoking! Problem is, it is just one big open room, the smokers off to the right and non-smokers seated off to the left. Trouble is, the tobacco smoke doesn't know it is supposed to stay on the smokers side so it all smells of tobacco smoke. Though they are supposed to have a good ventilation fan on the smoking side to suck out the smoke, it doesn't work. The food actually tastes of the tobacco smoke; I was deeply disappointed. Perhaps if they put up a solid wall between the two sections and put in adequate ventilation to keep the smoke odor / taste out of the food they prepare, then it might be a place to recommend. The food was good but probably can't go back. The smoke smell was too much for me as I'm a non-smoker. Had to get a box to go 1/2 way in. If your a non-smoker it starts to work on your sinuses, throat and just yuck taste while your eating. To each his own though. This place is famous in Fairbanks for the atmosphere. The people are nice, friendly, and extremely Alaskan. There are regulars and new people who come in everyday. The things on the wall never get old, there are articles, posters, sports paraphernalia, and lots of Elvis. They have bands about once a weekend, but usually after they stop serving dinner. There is so some great gluten free pizza and gluten free burgers! read more

Good place to drink if your a local but avoid ordering any food. Pizzas are over priced and not proportioned correctly. They really need to hire a professional chef to completely refresh the menu. Service was horrible. Had to ask more then once for water. Which had a funky taste. I had the rib special and my company had the fish and chips. Ribs were old and had a horrible taste. The ribs came with beans and slaw which were both very good but defiantly pre packaged. The biscuit that came with the ribs had the consistency of a hockey puck. I had to ask twice for napkins. I had to go to the restroom to wash my hands because the waitress never brought them until we had pushed the food away. I had to ask her to remove my plate and used wine glasses. The Linda's Fish and chips were from a box. More like Gordon's fish portions. Tartar sauce and cocktail sauce served in prepackaged single serve containers. And did I mention the service was horrible. The Irish cream cheese cake (prepackaged ) was very good. Not clean but this is Alaska and sometimes you have to look past that for a good meal. Updated. Went back cause I happened to be working in that area again and not much around there food wise. Got the chicken strips basket and a coke. Cost me 16 bucks with a tip but the service was still lacking. Food was much better the second time around but still pricey. Food was mediocre for the price. Soup and salad plus a coke, not even a beer and it cost me 20 bucks. For a salad I could have made myself at my hotel or got at Fred Meyer's salad bar for cheaper and the clam chowder was nasty. Like how it says smokers to the right non smoking to the left but there is no actual separation in the restaurant for it to matter. This is definitely a locals place and if you're not one, as I am here just for work for a while, feels a little awkward. Had a young lady who looked like she'd be drinking too long that day try to spark up conversation but only seemed to want to because no one else at the bar seemed to want to talk to her at the moment. For having to wait as long as I did for the soup to "be ready" as the bartender/waitress put it, was cold and not at all worth it. But when you don't know the area and need to eat what are you gonna do. Maybe had I ordered something else it wouldn't have been as bad, but wasn't about to drop over 20 bucks on lunch which I kinda ended up doing anyways after tipping. Well, our visit had a good start but a disaster end. We waited about 10mins to get the menus. Apparently, the server was more interested in the big party table next to us. She passed by several times and finally noticed us, got the menu and another 10mins for orders. Finally, we had our food. All the waiting was totally fine when we saw the food. But the servers then disappeared again even she walked around that party table so many times. She never got back and checked us, and we found a bug in the corn. And here is the best part, we called the server and told her about the bug, she said she would talk to the kitchen and just took the corn away. She came back with the check and totally ignored the bug thing. We asked her and she said I thought you guys would talk to the cook. WTF.. by that time, the only thing we wanted to do was just leave this place. She even didn't give us the to-go box. We asked about three times. She finally gave us one box and one small container. So bad experience in this restaurant. BTW, we ordered king crab leg. The price was good but the crab was not fresh. We just had king crab leg at turtle clue the other day. Came here at 1230am, only place that was opened around the area. The place seemed like it was closed when we stepped in, but to our surprise they turned the lights on for us and was able to easily accomadate a party of 7. We got pizzas which came in a reasonable amount of time and were delicious! Highly recommend for midnight munchies. read more

I'm sad to see that this place has lost some of its local feel since I was here last. It seems very much like any other roadside tourist stop instead of a local staple. We weren't so sure about Ivory Jacks but decided to give them a shot after seeing some of the pics on Yelp. When we entered, we ended up sitting on the smoking side of the restaurant - not realizing that there was a smoking and non-smoking side. It's literally one side versus the other. But thankfully there weren't a bunch of puffers in there. I got the nachos for dinner and my partner got the ribs. I was surprised that the nachos were like big triangles of maybe pita or something similar, single stacked with cheese and hamburger (not taco meat) and other toppings. They were good but not the pile o chips I was expecting with loads of slop on them. My partners full rack of ribs was crazy big. We ate half of it and took the other half home. We were thinking a full rack would be like a few ribs left for leftovers but it's like a double portion of their ribs. Crazy, I tell ya! We weren't disappointed with our meal but weren't really impressed either. It seems like a locals place and if you're not a local, you're not overly welcomed. read more

I really wanted this place to be good. I was going off the reviews and the pictures and it looked awesome...we got there and thought the place looked cool, sat down and we ordered potato skins as an appetizer,, then I got what I thought was a steak sandwich and my husband got some steak dinner. It was not good for either of us...my "sandwich" was a steak filet that was well done and ugly steamed vegetables that weren't fresh. My husbands steak was well done and it was awful. Just plain awful...the only pro was our server was nice and attentive. Ivory jacks isn't worth the drive or the food. The pictures are really deceiving....because the cooks cannot cook a steak...if you have to put steak sauce on a steak while you're eating it..the cook messed up. We won't be back or make the drive. As an out of towner whose friends were intent on my having a very Alaskan visit, they took me here. Be sure to read the poem on your place mat for a chuckle. Service was somewhat spotty - while we were a fairly large party, the place wasn't all that busy. However, our waitress was a bit hard to get hold of when people wanted things and we had to be somewhere by a certain time. The stuffed mushrooms were zingy (I admit I'm a wuss about spicy foods), and the halibut was fresh, massive and the wild rice was excellent. If the Elusive Waitress had been on form, we might have sprung for dessert, but it was not to be. read more
