I could see from the glances of other customers that we were not the only ones who felt that it was rather irritating. I have three grown children but I would never have taken them to a more upmarket restaurant for lunch if they were prone to that behaviour. I am sure the parents were struggling and possibly felt some embarrassment and could not enjoy their meals.
