NEVER TOO BUSY FOR IZZY'S | the most unassuming coffee shop inside and out... but I walked out with the tastiest cardamom rose latte & a perfect chocolate chip cookie. The latte art was also impeccable and the cardamom rose flavor was balanced. Seating was limited when I last visited to some seats/small tables that lined the wall. Looks like they have started to refill the space with more tables since then. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town this year for a solid latte and a sweet cookie treat. read more

Some may say this spot is "hipster" or try and place a label on it but I'll say labels aside this place dishes out some good coffee with a really fun and funky atmosphere that my wife and I both really digged. Kind of like a coffee shop dive bar vibe with a fantastic lavender matcha (not too lavender forward). Their baked goods were nice too, the cookie was perfectly crunchy but flavorful. Fun vibe, friendly people, free condoms! Great coffee and great options for those of us who are coffee-avoidant! Hubster had an iced 3-bean Dream which is double espresso, milk, coffee, and chocolate. Needs more sugar, but they have Sugar In The Raw on the side table. I was torn between their ginger lemonade and their lavender matcha. I eventually chose the ginger lemonade and it was super delicious! Not too tart, not too sweet, but still has the kick of fresh ginger. When I asked Hubster how his drink was, he said, "caffeinated. Might even keep me up for a while." Hmmm. 6pm on a Sunday night...might not have been the best choice, but, whatever. He definitely likes the blend. I gave in just before we left and got an iced lavender matcha to go. Made with whole milk, I'm loving the lavender syrup and the subtle green tea flavors. Definitely a dangerous combination and it is probably a good thing that we found this place on my last night here or we would have been here every day during my visit! When I go to Asheville, I always go to Dobra Tea to unwind (after blocks of shopping up and down the blocks nearby!)...so this time, decided to check out Izzy's right next door instead. Well, the place is very Boho/Grunge....or maybe it'd be considered Hipster? Super-casual though...with some funky artworks slapped on the wall (purposefully unevenly?). Speaking of funky, their bathroom wallpaper was full-on graffiti. Kinda fun, I guess. There were also a few tables and chairs scattered throughout the place, but I didn't find the ambiance too inviting. I just decided to get the basic Iced Latte (Vanilla), which came in a quite basic plastic cup...also with a cheap straw. Not much marketing going into their drinks, I guess. I also wish there was more ice in the drink. Just not as cold as I usually like it. Still, the drink was relatively cheap, and served its refreshing purpose. I didn't quite love the place, but am certainly glad it was there. Given how I keep returning to Downtown Asheville for shopping, I'm sure to revisit. read more

When I think of coffee & tea shops Izzy's comes to mind. Dark, comfortable, sparse interior with plenty of seats. The staff (one guy this early Monday morning) is friendly, casual, and quick. I wanted some sweetness after a meal so I scouted a nearby coffee shop and found Izzy's. I ordered a hot Maple Cardamom Latte as well as a hot Lavender Mocha; I also ordered the Chocolate Chip Cookie and Cornflake Cookie. The Maple Cardamom had an overwhelming amount of cardamom and I couldn't quite taste the maple. The Lavender Mocha however was delicious -- well balanced with just the right amount of sweetness. The lavender was very pleasant against the chocolate which was a happy surprise. The Cornflake Cookie was thin and had crunchy edges with toffee or butterscotch layered in. It was great, but the Chocolate Chip Cookie was unreal. Perhaps one of the best cafe cookies I've had. There was a deep molasses taste to the cookie. And the coarse salt and gigantic chunks of chocolate in every bite...I'd go to Asheville again just for this cookie! read more

I got kicked out of Izzy's Coffee Den on N Lexington Avenue for asking for another item on the menu! At around 4 PM on Tuesday this week, my wife and I stopped by Izzy's Coffee Den on N Lexington Avenue. We were hoping to enjoy a Mate Late, a Green Tea and a Bagel. I got in line and upon my turn I started ordering by asking for a Mate Late, which the guy started making before asking whether I was interested in anything else. Once finished, he started ringing me up. When I started when about ordering more, he frowned and impatiently said "what?" to which I replied him to clarify what he meant by asking "what?" because I was interested in ordering more. He then lost his temper and told me that I was rude, that he is not serving me and that I need to leave! This would be the first time that I was ever asked to leave for trying to order more, but after looking at Yelp reviews it seems that this type of behavior/service is consistent with what other customers have experienced at Izzy's Coffee Den on N Lexington Avenue. read more

I spent this past weekend in Asheville for the first time, and my friend and I ordered coffee from here twice. During my first visit, I ordered an iced blackberry latte and an Asiago cheese bagel with cranberry habanero cream cheese. Not to be dramatic, but it was one of the most interesting combos I've had on a bagel thus far. The texture and size of the bagel was perfect. Upon my second visit to Izzy's, I ordered a hot Karma latte with almond milk which tastes like liquified chocolate chip cookies that are burnt around the edges (in a good way). The Karma latte has a rich, toasty-chocolate flavor. I highly recommend this business as a visitor from out of state! read more

We asked the barista if he could make the mocha not overly sweet and he responded by saying that "sweetness is subjective." He acted like he hated us for no reason. Isn't the purpose behind a barista's job to make drinks based on the customer's requests? We asked for matcha lattes since the mocha request seemed over the top and annoying to him and our matches came out white and tasted like milk. Izzy's coffee den Izzy's Coffee Den is a coffee cafe off Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville. Not to be confused with their other location - Izzy's Coffee House, which (presumably) is in a house (I haven't been yet - but they're on my list). There were lots of street spots available to park in off Lexington - now that it's winter, and the seasonal tourism has kinda slowed down. I used my credit card at the meter and paid around a dollar to park, which is super affordable. There's also a pay by spot lot directly across the street to utilize when the street spots are in higher demand; I always recommend having a few random singles tucked away in your bra just in case you decide to park in one of those lots. Also - keeping some extra cash hiding close to your lady parts is always a good way to simultaneously offend and disgust the cashier at Sams club. Nothing says "Holiday Cheer" like digging around in your sports bra for some soggy cash to pay for that oversized container of Rugelach pastry you're getting to bring to the office Christmas party. Anyway, Lexington Avenue is an delightful street, lined with cute shops that sell a wide variety of things like crystals, artwork, kitchen supplies, hiking gear, etc. - so definitely leave some time to peruse the boutiques after you have your coffee & snack over at Izzy's. The inside of Izzy's Coffee Den is warm and welcoming, with soft lighting - yet artsy and eclectic at the same time. And, speaking of shopping - don't miss the *super fabulous* things they have for sale at the coffee shop itself; from (very affordable), (non-human) skull & wide eyed kitty magnets, to super fun aprons, reusable metal straws, and even bath bombs! While you're waiting for your drink to be made - make sure to check out the extra fabulous framed artwork, (also for sale) from a variety of very talented local artists - including Jen Toledo (link) herself. I ordered a Mexican Mocha Coffee, and a piece of Homemade-Vegan-Gluten Free- Carrot-Apple-Banana-Bread that I enjoyed at a high top table against the wall, which afforded me a primo view of the artwork on display. The Latte was just the right amount of spicy, rich - but not too rich, and had an super fancy fleur de lis foam. It came in an "Izzy's" mug - which made me feel even more at home. I think my favorite part of the coffee drink itself was that it was slightly sweet, but in a more natural way - there definitely wasn't any faux sugar overload. In addition to coffee drinks they also have a pretty broad selection of beer, wine, and mimosas. The barista was nice enough to heat up the piece of bread that I ordered for an (intended) snack. It turned out the slice was so huge it was good enough for a full meal! The bread itself was *delicious*, it tasted fresh and healthy, and was very moist - a difficult combination to perfect for gluten free/vegan baked goods... Nothing like the GF/vegan things I attempt to bake at home, that always end up tasting like a strange combination of sandpaper, communion wafers, nuts, and sadness. Not only does Izzy's have baked goods such as bread, cookies, scones, etc. - they also have bagels & cream cheese, as well as fruit. Izzy's is definitely a cozy, warm, laid back - yet welcoming environment, with soft lighting, and pleasant music. This was a cute little coffee house in Asheville. Asheville has a lot of cute little shops and restaurants. This one was very nice as well. They have fresh baked goods which were delicious. I got the raspberry scone. It was sweet without being too sweet. The texture was soft, which was nice because too often scones are crumbly and dry. The coffee was delicious. They have some house made syrups in select flavors (I forget them all, but I know one was vanilla). However, they offer other flavors that aren't house made which creates some variety. I got my latte with the house-made vanilla syrup and it was tasty. You can really taste the vanilla and syrup adds enough sweetness that I didn't need to add any sugar.. The inside is nice too. There aren't too many seats, but it is cozy. This is a perfect place to grab a cup of coffee in the morning to start your day. read more
