This is quite a large outdoor store in Lexington, Kentucky, one of the only ones in town. They have a wide selection of really nice items, but you can expect to pay a premium price. I visited on a Saturday and I was a little disappointed that I wasn't offered any help by an associate. I looked around and couldn't find anyone to help me with the backpacks. There were a few things I had questions on, and I couldn't find someone to assist me and no one offered any assistance. Maybe next time. read more

I've been shopping here for a little while. Bought quite a lot of clothing here; never paid much attention to the price. I was in process of trying on a pair of shorts and thought I'd just check. Couldn't believe what I've discovered. EVERY ITEM I WAS CONSIDERING WAS BETWEEN 20 AND 70 PERCENT OVER MSRP. I will NEVER darken your doorstep again. Ridiculous. read more

I've been shopping at J&H for decades, ever since it was downtown near Rupp Arena, and was called J&H Army Navy Store and sold military surplus gear and clothes for next to nothing. Theses days, of course, it's central Kentucky's premier outdoor clothes, shoes/boots, and equipment. Most recently with an ice storm looming, I dropped in for some some battery powered flashlights/lamps. They were closing early to let their employees beat the ice and get home. I only had a bout 10 minutes to shop, but one of the sales clerks quickly offered advice and I was out of there in 5 minutes! Ice storm was a bust, but I'm ready for the next one!! read more

Just before the latest winter storm hit, I was frantically running around town searching for some type of lantern in case we lost power. Obviously everyone else had the same idea because every store was sold out. J & H to the rescue! I gave them a call, yes, they had some in stock, so I drove over as fast as I could without breaking the law! When I arrived, I had three choices. After receiving a friendly and thorough explanation, I left with three lanterns. I was a very relieved and elated customer. Quite frankly, I'd rather give my dollars to a local business versus a mega chain store any day of the week. Thanks J & H for coming to the rescue! By the way, we did not lose power, so I didn't need them after all, but I'm ready for the next snow/ice storm. Bring it on!! read more

When we walked in we were greeted and asked if we needed any assistance. I ended up looking at and trying on a pair of Hoka Bondi 5s which I have fallen in love with. They don't have a huge selection but what they do have is quality. We also looked at the clothing and again not a huge selection but I had no problems in finding at least 3 jackets I'd buy right away. The feel of the store reminds me of EMS back at home. I'm definitely all about supporting local businesses and we'll definitely be back for the shoes and the rain jacket plus some other items we saw. Staff is never particularly friendly. They are outdoor snobs. I had an issue with a return after Christmas and will not support this business in the future. You will find a better selection online and Backcountry, REI and Moosejaw have better customer service. Do not waste the trip. read more

There's nothing I love more than seeing local businesses succeed. My husband worked here part time in college so we're very supportive of the store. The place has been through an amazing transformation and is able to offer more brands and quantity of products. I went into J&H today on the hunt for a new rain jacket (as mine is currently soaking in more water than it is repelling). The store is clean and well organized- currently there are a lot of winter apparel markdowns. When I walked in I was greeted by the staff, who let me browse. The nice thing about J&H is that they have plenty of full length mirrors around where the outerwear is, eliminating the need to haul a bunch of coats to try on back & forth from the dressing rooms (which they also have). Once I started trying on a few rain jackets, an employee came over to ask if I needed any help or had any questions. J&H, true to its name, also has a ton of camping/hiking gear for people looking for more outdoor equipment than just a rain jacket :) read more

These guys are a pretty awesome locally owned outfitters. They have a wide selection of outdoor gear for everyone from car campers to ultralight backpackers. The staff have always been friendly and knowledgable; they've even helped me out with a bunch of special orders in the past. They are a bit more expensive than other stores, but they only sell quality gear and with their in house expertise they deserve to exist. This store had an amazing selection of high quality outdoor type brands. Whenever I walk in there is always someone kind to greet you/ ask if you need help, which is nice. The workers then will leave you to shop on your own (they are not pushy and obnoxious as other store workers can be). This is a great place to get gifts for others. This was my first visit to the store, and it was amazing! They have pretty much everything you could need to get outdoors -- I saw everything from clothes and backpacks to mess kits and kayaks in here. They frequently host demo events, which they announce through their Facebook page and e-mail list. My husband and I purposely stopped in the evening we did to test out some of the Backpacker's Pantry foods that were being offered. (By the way, the foods were so much better than others we've tried!) We took some time to browse the sale clothing, and the reps were pretty helpful at answering our questions. I have to give them credit that, though the shop was closing, they didn't make us feel unwelcome or that we should leave. The salesperson kept walking us through the jackets and explaining the differences between them even after the store had closed. Hopefully I'll be back to by my own jacket soon! This store was impressive! Doesn't look like much from the outside but once you walk in the door- WOW! My husband and I are from Erlanger KY, we usually go to dicks, field & stream, REI... this is our new favorite. Seriously loved it!! The display of the entire store is just great! I love to be outdoors. I kayak. I hike. I camp. I snowshoe. I do yoga. I also like to support locally-owned stores over chain stores when I need gear or clothing. So when I needed a life jacket to go kayaking this weekend I thought I'd give J & H Lanmark a chance. See what gear they had and check out their clothing selection. Problem is, I'm also a plus-sized gal and while this store has a large selection of clothing, it's mostly for the XS, S, and M crowd. Very few of their clothing had size XL and none...save one pair of Ex Officio underwear...was an XXL. Despite there only being a few other customers, I wandered around the store for 10 minutes before someone approached and asked if I was looking for anything. I asked for a life jacket and he pointed to a rack and said 'there' and then walked away. I tried on their one style but didn't like it. Never was approached by any employee again. I wandered around for a few more minutes then left. Went to Dick's Sporting Goods, asked for help and was taken to a rack of life jackets. The sales associate helped me find one that I liked and fit well. I was happy to give the chain store my money. Can't deny it's a nice store with lots of gear at a fairly reasonable price. But if you need clothing over the size 'L' go elsewhere. read more

The last time that I was shopping here there was an employee named Kaylan that followed me into the fitting room and made me feel very uncomfortable. I recently bought a shirt here, and am impressed by the quality. Their prices are on the expensive side, in part because of the quality of products they sell. The customer service here is undeniably spectacular. The workers are always greeting people with a smile, asking if customers need help, and just providing a great source of service. Love J & H. Local small business with excellent selection of outdoor apparel, hiking boots, camping/climbing gear etc. etc. I really like that they offer different options both brand and style wise (especially outerwear)that you cant find at the "big box" type stores. Im not much of a mail order shopper and I like the fact you can try on these brands that are not so readily available to determine fit/feel etc. before you buy. I don't have the time to be packing up stuff and mailing returns every five seconds and checking my bank account to make sure monies have been put back in my account. I might if I were a retiree, but alas I have a ways to go. Low pressure people work the floor.....sometimes so low pressure you have to hunt them down....but when they realize you have questions they seem ready to assist and give good direction in my opinion. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and you can tell they are all outdoor enthusiasts themselves, which is essential for any good outdoor store. My mom and I are getting ready to climb Mount Kenya, and the staff has been super helpful with all of their advice. I bought my first real hiking boots at J&H at their Main Street location when I was 19 years old before going on an Outward Bound adventure almost 30 years ago. I bought my first pair of Oboz hiking boots a month ago, hiked 30 miles in them and realized along the way they are 1/2 size too small. My mistake. When I presented them to Jim in the J & H shoe dept. he carefully looked at the sizing, brought me a larger pair, checked the sizing again, and promptly exchanged them without penalty.
