Absolutely amazing location. Some of the best scenery of the californian coast on display while you fish. The boats ride the swell great, thanks to the experienced captains running them. The deckhands go out of their way whenever possible to ensure fishermen and women of every caliber end the day with big smiles and full sacks. However, that is also due to the fact that the fish stocks along this section of coast are some of the best anywhere in california, the fishing is truly remarkable here. 10/10 would recommend everyone experience fishing like this atleast once in their life. read more

The captain definitely knows how to put you on fish -- no complaints there. But the deckhand ruined the experience. Many people on the boat were clear first-timers, and on every other boat I've been on, the deckhands help unhook fish for beginners. Instead, this deckhand gave people attitude, refused to help, and said she'd "show them once" and that was it. Meanwhile, she spent more time fishing than assisting anyone. One passenger even had a rental pole malfunction, and instead of swapping it out, the deckhand just said it was "far enough in the water" and handed it back. I ended up helping other passengers because she wouldn't do her job. Great captain, terrible deckhand. Would be an amazing trip with better crew support. read more

Weather and ocean were favorable, and best of all, fishing was excellent! We don't have to go far to get into some quality fish. Captain and deck hand were helpful and friendly. Had limits of rockfish, lots of different varieties, I had my sub limit of Vermillion and Canary by about 10 am. So we went to target Lingcod. Not a lot of luck there, but still managed to have a lot of fun. read more

Last day of rock fishing 12/31/2025 I was very hopeful the last day would be a banger but ended up only fishing 2 hrs on a 8 hr trip.... In the first 30 minutes I had gotten my limit of ling cod so did my buddy and we being thoughtful people we ended up getting 5 other people on the boat their limit for them the captain Andrew was fixed on getting a boat limit after all the hard work we and others put in contributing to the boat limit we only fished for rock fish 30 minutes? I only ended up with 2 small rockfish and two lings I mean something is better than nothing but common guys if that was the game plan at least let us know! Next time I will be more focused on making the right decisions to make sure I make the best of my trip.....we even asked for a little more time on the reef to at least get a shot at a few more rockfish but instead was ignored.. read more

The captains are really cool and nice and the deckhand kayla is the same. She's super helpful fixing snags and just overall managing the whole scene making sure we are all catching and having fun. I last minute booked this trip. We had a previous trip booked with another business, but they notified us that it was canceled while we were driving to the location. It seems this happens with a lot of deep sea fishing trips due to not knowing what the water conditions will be until the day before or the day of. I ended up looking around and saw J&M had availability for the same day we had our original trip booked. We showed up the next morning an hr early, and we checked in with the desk. The lady there was very nice. They talked about the safety procedures before getting on the boat. I believe there were about 20 of us. I was getting annoyed reading all the bad reviews of people getting sick and the boat not turning around early to take them back. They have no control over the waves, and anyone going out on the ocean should be prepared for getting sea sick. We were definitely prepared and took our medicine before getting on the boat and had no issues with getting sick. It took a few different locations to start getting some catches, but overall, we had a great time catching rock cod. Kayla was trying her best to get around to everyone who needed help with their rods and making sure to identify any fish that were caught. She also checked in with everyone to see they were feeling okay and if they needed any ginger candy. She was super friendly and joked around with all of us. My boyfriend caught his limit of 10 fish, and I caught 6, but I had some pretty big ones. We were worried about the cost of cleaning fish at the dock, but after the trip was over, they announced Kayla would be cleaning fish, about $2 each. This was perfect! It definitely made our day because the 7-hour trip made us so tired, and we were dreading going back and finding out where to go to take our fish and paying $10-$20 a fish. We had an amazing 1st experience deep sea fishing. We'll definitely come back here next time. read more

Awesome time! Waves were a little rough but Dramamine is your friend. Caught the most fish but not the largest...Loved the ride but many of the people near my cousin and I got sick which was bad...Some people just need to give it up and stay home so as not to ruin other people's time. The ship was large and not overly crowded and it got us to our destination really fast. Kayla the deck hand was a champ helping all the newbs and strugglers. I felt sad for her but tipped her out generously since I saw some people were being cheap. I was the last one to get my fish cleaned and filleted so that was when I thanked her for her hard work. She was happy about the tip but was Ungrateful for her. I caught the max 10 fish easily and was just shocked at how everyone struggled. The captain made it easy to catch fish but you have to follow his cues. I highly recommend J & M if you ever want to go charter fishing! read more

We took our family out as part of a family reunion. From booking to the time we left the boat the people at J&M were AWESOME. We originally were scheduled to go out on a Thursday for the four hour afternoon Rock Cod catch. They emailed and called to cancel because of bad weather. We scheduled for the next day. Captain Andrew put us right on top of a huge school of fish several times. The whole boat (27 including our 8) limited out in about an hour and a half. The Deck Hands, Matt and Corey were the best. We had people there from 8 to 64 and we couldn't have asked for a more family friendly atmosphere. It was amazing to watch them fillet the fish both on the boat and when we got back to the dock (way too many to do while we were out). If you ever receive this email on the day of your fishing trip, please cancel it! I understand that a waiver was required to be signed prior to departure, but this trip should have been cancelled. We were placed in unsafe conditions, and in very rough waters. It was poor decision making by the Captain. We left dock in the afternoon which gave the crew time to consider weather conditions. It was a full boat, with 30+ people, and it would've resulted in a productive day which implied that money was more of a priority than customer safety. It was a collaborative decision, between the company and the Captain. My husband couldn't even stand still while fishing because the boat would not stop rocking. As a result of that, he did not have the chance to fish and it was a waste of money. The boat rocking caused my dad to fall and hit his head, which resulted in a trip to the emergency room. They only had one bathroom and my mom and I used it simultaneously to throw up. Since other people were feeling nauseous, while my mom and I were in the bathroom, they had no choice but to vomit in the ocean. Several people threw up and got sick on the boat. I will never consider this boat again for future use. read more

Man how do I start this review? As an elite yelper, I must be honest and truthful. Let's roll. So I booked this trip using a smoking travelzoo deal. I mean smoking deal. This same trip out of Emeryville would cost $225 a person. I have been checking there crab/fish report since they keep track. There counts have not been amazing at all. Maybe one crab each angler. Not good whatsoever. I know this same trip out of Emeryville, they have been limiting with each angler. The limit dungy crabs is ten. I'm not comparing but seems like Monterey might not be good for crabbing. We will find out. We arrived and check in was fast and easy. The girl working the counter was awesome. We load on the boat and we are lucky to have Alfredo as our deckhand and Rod as our captain. These two guys are legit. The ocean was not the friendliest. The swells sucked. So we checked 18 pots that soaked overnight. We swooped meaning my party of four bagged a total of 9 crabs. It gets worse. The fishing also wasn't good. A party of four, we only bagged 4 fish. I'm a fisherman and I got ZERO! Yes, zero fish. Luckily my wife caught two and my daughter snagged two fish on one line. We ended up going in early due to the winds and the swells. This was around 1pm. So this fishing trip did suck for catching. In the future, I will not go out of Monterey bay for this trip. If I would have gone the bay area route, with only myself, I would have done better crabbing and fishing just by myself compared to a party of four. I am not blaming J&M fishing. The crew themselves were awesome. Super awesome. This is why it's called fishing and not catching. I am just saying I would not go the Monterey bay route ever again. Now for the deckhand Alfredo. Such a good dude. He kept my kids entertained and kept the whole boat going. He has an amazing talent when it comes to kids. Hats off to you Alfredo. You do great with the kiddos. Keep it up. I think he has a niche with kids and fishing. Maybe explore that route for fishing with kids program. That's how good of a job he did. read more

Nice experience. Some of the workers were nice. However I was hoping for more directions as to what to expect once you're on the boat. Pros: caught plenty of fish : 10max bag. Helpful workers on deck. Get your fish filleted on boat. Staff helps out with tangles when you rent. Cons: Directions as to where to park and walk to the shop is not clear. There were a few shops/docs so cleared instructions over the phone or website would really help. Wasn't expecting the boat trip out to the fishing spot to be so long. Over an hour to 2 hrs boat ride. I wasn't aware we can sit in the middle inside the boat at first so I got a little cold/nauseous at first because I thought I had to hold my spot outside during the boat ride. I rented their pole and rig thinking they had special set ups and I wanted to see different set ups. They're Rod was very basic and stiff with a simple 2 shrimp fly set up. My set ups were much better. It was quite cramped on the boat with plenty of fishers. Everyone was nice and helped each other out but very cramped. Overall I enjoyed the first time experience and caught plenty of fish. But if there was better information, it would of prevented the stress getting there and my minor nausea due to being outside during the boat ride so long. If you have rock fished before, I highly recommend you bring your own rods and rigs. They just had a simple shrimp fly set up. I was hoping to learn new tricks/set ups but didn't. I would also recommend paying a little more and going on a smaller more intimate boats because it's hard to enjoy fishing next to so many people. read more

Thinking of doing a daytrip? My auntie and I drove from SF to Monterey and back in a day to see orcas with the lovely Discovery Whale Watch crew (shout out to Rod & Andrew for giving us the best views of the orca pod along Monterey Coastline). The boat is small which is more comfortable for those who get seasick, and also makes it easier for the captain to maneuver towards "creatures of interest" who can often be fast moving and change directions at a moment's notice. Needless to say, make your reservations in advance because this is by far the best whale watching boat in Monterey! And just take the dramamine! read more

The crew worked hard getting us over fish. Although not the biggest rockcod we all got our limits. Even we though we fished Point Joe, Andrew the deckhand did filet and clean as much of the catch before reaching the dock. Much appreciated as it saved time. I research this trip before buying it. Crabbing is hit or miss in Monterey, so I wasn't expecting much for crabs. The rock cod fishing is pretty good in Monterey. My buddy ended up catching limits on Ling Cod and we caught many rock fish. The weather was great and we couldn't have asked for a better trip. We caught about 5 fish each and 2 crabs not bad for what little they charge for the charter and having an amazing fishing trip with friends. The captain was great and the deck hand Daniel was amazing. We got to see Orcas breaking and 2 humpback whales. That a once in a lifetime fishing, orca watching, & humpback whale watching trip of a lifetime! We'll be back for another charter again real soon. read more

Super happy with this charter, we booked last minute trying to find a fun trip and challenging trip! First of the check in process was fast and easy!
