It was confirmed however upon us arriving at this establishment the owner said he wouldn't honor the confirmation at all. The negative energy this man gave off was at the most high ! I'm a business owner This customer service was disrespectful & disgusting He said he didn't look at his computer all day & he talked to "artist on the go" customer service he clearly said he didn't want to confirm. He is an absolute master on the science of color and cut. Also, I brought a book with me to read but never picked it up because we just had the most genuine and stimulating conversation throughout my appointment. Dammmn! That's all I can think when I look in the mirror now! Sebna did an INCREDIBLE job on my hair. I came in wanting something completely different and walked away with a beautiful color (balayage) and cut! I think sometimes it's important to take a step back and realize just because you may think the bangs/ombré look looks cool doesn't mean it's going to be the best look for you. I completely trusted Sebna to do what she thought would look best - my only requirement was to have a noticeable difference in my hair and she nailed it! To be honest, I definitely don't go to the salon as much as I should, but I think I'm going to have to start going a little more if I'm going to look this great every time! Technique is completely lacking... Went in for a really basic curly blow drive. I have extensions in which after 2 hours of being in the chair my roots are still not dry and on top of that she was unable to blow dry my hair curly cause it was too "heavy" even though I've had my extensions blow dried curly several times. She ended up using a wand to compensate as she couldn't do it with a brush and then charged me for it !! I walked away with several fly aways vs a smooth blow dry and some of my roots were still curly. Staff is sweet but I Would not go back. read more

I'm a recent NYC transplant from Los Angeles, and was excited to find a cute salon near my apartment. Christy and the staff we're great..... All up until I went to pay my bill! I was quoted $150 for a full head of highlights and a trim. When I went to pay, my total owed was $292!!! I damn near had a heart attack. (I was told "They stripped my hair, did a single process on the bottom layers, + a wash and cut"). BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.....$292 is crazy.... You'd think I had just done my hair my Rita Hazan!! (Not to mention my hair came out JUST OK....Nothing to brag about....ESPECIALLY considering the price I paid!). With that said.....I'll be looking for another salon soon.....this one is just NOT what it's prices are cut out for! read more

Worst haircut I have ever gotten! I had Chris, the owner of this salon cut my hair last week, and as you can see from my profile photo, it is absolutely terrible. After I specifically told him I did not want choppy layers, he cut a thick layers into my hair at above chin length, which stick out no matter how I try to style it. And when I called the salon and asked for a refund or at the very least, a complimentary blow-dry, Chris did not even have the decency to speak to me himself, and instead had the receptionist just repeat over and over that they don't do refunds. I have been a customer at J Christopher for just over a year now. I was new to the neighbourhood and saw that they received great reviews - so I decided to check it out. First - the people who work there are great. If they ever made a sitcom about a salon, it could be based on this place. Everyone is very warm and inviting and has a great sense of humour. It's like a big family. So if you like that kind of environment, this is the place for you. Sebna cuts my hair. I have very complicated hair and she has the skills to tame it. She also has the skills to put up with me (vague requests, weird feedback). Over the past year, Sebna has helped me find a hairstyle that I absolutely love. Sebna is also great because she is so genuinely nice and loves to chat. If I ever leave NYC, I will definitely miss her. Brianna - the receptionist/scheduler - seems to know every one of the customers. Another fantastic thing about JCS is that Brianna (and the stylists) will go out of their way to make sure you get in when you need to. For example, I generally get my hair cut every other Sunday. If I haven't called for an appointment, Brianna will call and ask if I still want it. They are soooo nice! You can tell the other stylists are also really good just based on the reaction of other customers. They are also all super nice. Like the Cheers theme song "sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name." Best of all - prices are very affordable. read more

I have gone to J. Christopher many times and I am very pleased with the outcome. Christian is amazing with cutting hair, and J. Christopher is phenomenal with color. I went in with black hair and I left there very blond (like I wanted) just with a full head of highlights. It came out the exact color I wanted. He was very knowledgeable and fast. My hair always comes out just they way I wanted if not better. I have extremely curly hair and this is one of the only salons I have gone to that have paid close attention to my hair and made sure to treat it with care. They are reasonably priced (they offer discounts on Lifebooker) and the salon is welcoming and relaxing. I recently booked an appointment for this weekend with Christian. I am so excited! read more

Worst experience of my life. Wanted a simple balaylage - walked out with burn dip dyed bleached hair was brassy and orange. Also wanted long chin length bangs to frame my face. I walked out with a thick fringe bang. This place MURDERED and DESTROYED my hair. I was told it would look exactly like the picture. So I usually never write reviews, but I feel like I had to review this place so other people can know. So I went in for a balayge, and even brought a picture in. The process was about 3 hrs with bleaching and toning, and when I was at the salon my hair seemed alright and that there was nothing wrong with it. But when I got home I noticed that my hair was done very incorrectly, I gotten my hair balayaged 3 times before so I know what it should look like. The balayage was like at the front of my hair and some parts inside but none in the back. I messaged the lady who did my hair and she didn't understand that it wasn't done properly and that I would have to pay more to get it redone or fixed. I already spent money where my hair got ruined, and I wasn't gonna spend any more money when I didn't trust the person. Also, I'm not the type to complain or write bad reviews but felt that this needed to be said for the poor work and service honestly. Whenever there was something wrong done with my hair or when I was not happy with the results I was always offered to come back and get it fixed for free. Instead I would have to pay about $200 more just to get my hair fixed which doesnt make sense. read more

When it comes to haircuts, trust in your stylist is HUGE. I have super thick hair, and a long bob hairstyle, which can be a tricky combination. I am so lucky to have found Sebna - she is talented, meticulous and detail oriented, as well as warm. She makes me feel comfortable in terms of speaking up about something I may not have been totally happy with the last time, perfecting it during the new haircut. Today was my third trip to J Christopher. The first two times were worth the money. Today I screamed on the inside the whole time. My attendant seemed like she was going into DTs. She had to use two hands holding the shears in order to control the shakes. She had another customer under the drier at the same time. She made it very clear at the end that she had to rush to get back to her. The cut ended up tolerable but I feared for my ears the whole time. read more

Blondes, listen up: If you're looking for a colorist/stylist in NYC where you don't pay an arm & a leg, you need to book an appointment with Kristi today. First time I went to her was after a breakup & wanted to change my signature blonde into an ombre. Kristi was a little nervous changing my hair so drastically but I basically said just do it however you want, I need to wash that man out of my hair stat (lol) It didn't come out quite as planned but it looked very natural & I was happy. When I went back 3 months later, we did a darker, richer ombre with red hues & I loved it - perfect change for the new year! I should also mention that I called for an appointment day of NYE & they made time to fit me in. I went to a hair stylist in NYC to return to blonde & then a touch-up in Hoboken after buying a groupon - both experiences were meh, okay but I decided to go back to Kristi. She didn't make me feel like a bad client for going to another salon & talked me through the whole process. She took her time & I'm so happy with how my color (& cut!) came out. I initially tried making my appointment through Lifebooker & when I called to check if Kristi was available, the receiptionist said I could book through her and get 30% off. My total bill with tip was $200, which included: partial highlights, cut, gloss, blowout AND style (she curled my hair since it was Friday night & I was going out with my girlfriends). I went here for the first time using a lifebooker deal. From the second I set foot in the door the staff (from the receptionist to Josh who washed my hair, to Gina who did the cut) was incredibly friendly, welcoming and accommodating. I knew I wanted a change, and was considering going for the shaved "undercut" style that's becoming popular now, but I was super nervous about taking such a plunge...My stylist was Gina and aside from being an absolute doll, she was super willing to work with my specific requests and inability to make a decision in regards to the undercut. She did the haircut first, and let me think about whether or not I wanted to do the shave underneath. While she did the cut we chit-chatted and she was amazing about letting me know what would and wouldn't work with my hair (which is SUPER thick, and naturally wavy...although I usually straighten it), and she modified the style accordingly. At the end, she blew it out and flat ironed it and let me decide whether or not I wanted to do the shaved piece...with the encouragement and moral support from both Josh and Gina, I decided to take the dive...and let me tell you, i absolutely LOVE it. The amount that she shaved and the placement let's me show it off if I want to, or hide it completely when I want to be more conservative. I went back 2 weeks later to have her re-shave it for me, and she took me last minute and didn't charge me a thing! (I tipped her obviously, but still! what a sweetheart!) Chris did my treatment last night and it was one of the, if not the best, I've ever had. He was knowledgeable, used great products, and my hair is transformed. I have been seeing Sebna since 2009, and she is just wonderful. She won my loyalty when she was the first stylist I saw in NYC who actually listened to what I wanted and needed for my hair, instead of pushing an agenda of coloring or layers or whatever. She also gives thoughtful advice when I'm not sure what I want! When I got married 2 years ago I asked her to do my hair for that and of course she did a lovely job and put in a lot of time -- the salon actually lost power on the day of my wedding and she went above and beyond to keep our appointment and get my hair styled. My favorite thing about Sebna, though, is just how lovely she is. I feel like I have a real relationship with her. She's just a great person in addition to being an experienced and highly competent stylist. read more

I came to J. Christopher on a Tuesday evening to chop off my stringy hair to something much shorter (I booked it on LifeBooker). The stylist, Josh, was AWESOME. He saw the picture I brought in (Sienna Miller's "Factory Girl" haircut) and knew immediately how to do it. After some cursory questions ("Do you want it any shorter than this? Longer? What about the back?") we went ahead. He was quite chatty, which was fine with me since I was in the mood to talk. The cut was a little bit shorter than I anticipated, but he did do a great job on explaining the type of product I would need to maintain the cut and how to blow-dry it so I could replicate my post-visit look. Would I go back again? Sure. He knew what he was doing and was really friendly. It's a little bit out of my way (I work by Union Square and live on the UWS) but totally worth it to have Josh do my hair again. read more

I got married in a small, city hall wedding followed by dinner - so I was not looking to spend a ton of money on getting my updo done and bird cage veil put in. I scored a great deal on Lifebooker for an updo and, to my overwhelming joy, when I called them to ask about a small veil and comb being involved in said updo, they were cool with it. SCORE. The day of, I brought my five best girls and a bunch of champagne to my 11am appointment. Christian was SO nice, SO patient, and really put in time and effort getting everything just how I wanted it. He asked me how I felt about things along the way (great for a control freak like me) and even let me put on my makeup at the salon just before he put my veil on. I got compliments all day and night on my hair and it didn't BUDGE - just like I wanted. Oh, Christian, how I love you. It pains me to say it, but the one, singular complaint I had was that when I called to say I was running late (DUH, it's my wedding day, of course I'm running a few minutes late), the person who answered the phone made a snarky comment about how I was already five minutes late and basically made me seriously consider getting out of the cab and sprinting the 30 blocks I had left instead of sitting in the stopped traffic I had just described to said phone answerer. The kicker: when I got there, I was their first appointment of the day, not one customer was in the store, and every employee was sitting down waiting for something to happen.
