I stood inside for a while and had to walk over to the ladies chatting in order for them to ask me what service I need. Pretty standard salon with the wash and cut. However, there's really only one lady who understands and speaks English. The guy who cut my hair didn't understand or speak so she had to translate, which is a deal breaker for me. Miscommunication can definitely ruin a haircut. The price is also much higher than the salon next door. This was my first time at the salon to get a cut and balayage. I had Ray as a stylist, who did an amazing job and was very quick with the cut and meticulous with the color. My hair was a brassy light brown color at the bottom and I wanted a cut and ash brown and he spent 5 hours with his assistant to get me the color that I wanted. Both were very nice and took their time to make sure my hair came out nicely. He also curled my hair at the end as well! I paid 230 plus tip! Very good price considering how I paid 250 at another salon wth no cut or styling. I highly recommend Ray! I didn't actually know what color I really wanted so Anson gave me some reference pics to choose from and I picked out the ashy brown pink hair. (I have had been getting brown hair for the past 2 years and was getting sick of brown hair so I wanted to give another color a shot) The bleaching process was the longest part but in the end, I LOVE how the colours and the hair cut came out! This may be my new hair salon going foward. Was looking for a well rated Asian hair salon (who knew Asian hair) in the area. Made reservations. Was clear on their fair pricing. And seemed COVID careful when I asked about wearing masks. When I arrived, they took my temperature, gave me a plastic cover to wear, everyone inside had masks. Inside was clean. Started out with a 15 min a very through shampoo massage. I was suprised this was all part of the service. Dried my hair gave me a trim part of the hair dye fee. There are two hair dyes ($90 and $110). This time, I wanted to try the lower end. They made sure the color was seeping in with a test and cover my hair with dye a couple of times for about an hour total. Even providing a mini disposable face shield. Blow dried my hair, put oil. Dyed my hair from virgin gray to a gray at this place with Jason as my stylist. At first, I wanted a lighter gray for the tips, but Jason was very truthful and told me he would not be able to reach that lightness with my black hair. Instead we compromised and dyed it a balayage gray. The process took about 7 hours to do total, five was just to bleach! The workers were very caring and asked if I wanted take out because they knew the process was going to be extremely long. I didn't have enough cash to cover the cost of it, but Jason let me run to an atm after the process was done, he was so trusting and flexible! He dyed my hair in July (sorry for such a late post!!) And even now I'm still receiving compliments on my hair, with the help of a bit of purple shampoo. I'm very happy with the way it turned out. I've been going to J1 Hair Salon for the past 4-5 years but yesterday was the first time I dyed my hair at the salon. But, must I say, I really should've done it earlier because I love the results! I had Vincent Lee as my stylist and he walked me through every step of the hair coloring process. Because I have really thick and dark hair, he told me that I wouldn't be able to achieve the color that I wanted (which was a light blonde color) all in one day, since bleaching a third time will be too damaging to my hair. With that being said, Vincent, as well as his assistant, really cared for my hair and took the time and necessary precautionary measures to make sure that I would love the results, and I do! On average, coloring one's hair takes about 3-4 hours but because my hair was so dark and thick, it took 7 hours! So really, a BIGGG shoutout goes to Vincent and his assistant for going through this process with me! Altogether, coloring and cutting my hair was $260. I will definitely recommend others to come in the future, and I will be returning too. read more

I just had my hair dyed for the first time yesterday and couldn't have asked for a better experience. Though I knew that I wanted something subtle and didn't want my roots dyed, I didn't have a color in mind. The staff recommended Vincent Lee as a stylist/colorist. I'm so grateful that they did. Vincent was very knowledgeable. He did a quick assessment of my hair, while trimming to my desired length. He explained the current condition of my hair and recommended treatments, along with hairstyles. Personally, I don't enjoy getting hair cuts because the results are average at best. I only visit salons once a year for the 'mandatory' Chinese New Year haircut. Because Vincent seemed so well informed, I left all the decision making to him. It was my first time dyeing my hair and I couldn't get a better experience. I wanted to dye it purple for some random reason. Maybe I missed my rebellion years and now I'm making up for it with a vengeance. I called a week ahead to reserve time because based on other reviews this place is pretty busy. I got lucky and got Ray to lead the entire transformation process. I came with photos that I gathered from all the purple color hair. He told me the color that I wanted was super bright and recommended slightly darker. I'm really glad he made that recommendation as I would have been in total shock. Because it was my first time dying my hair, Ray gave directions to leave the roots unbleached so it won't be painful for me. He mixed a test batch and dyed it on a small bunch to let me test drive the color. We finally found the right shade of purple and continue the dyeing process. The whole process took a little more than 4 hours. I was the last customer leaving the store. Ray took extra care into cutting my hair and styling it. I left feeling like a punk princess. Writing a review on behalf of my mother, who walked in requesting for a perm and hair cut. Upon entering, she was met with rude, condescending attitude as if she was a nuisance, with statements that implied that she couldn't afford their perm. It was made obvious to her that she did not meet their standards for their clientele and she frustratingly walked out. Thankfully there was another salon in the neighborhood that treated her with respect and received great service. Made an appointment for me and my friend since she's been here couple times already. She loves coming here cus 1) price isn't comparable to Queens hair salons and 2) Jason knows what he's doing!! They were very good with Covid precautions, as there was not much customers coming in. When we first arrived at 12pm (we were late due to Brooklyn traffic, but Jason was very understanding) he sat us down and we showed him pictures of what we wanted. My Chinese is not the greatest but I could tell Jason preferred to speak to me more than my friend (she's Indonesian). There was a bit miscommunication since I can't explain well in Chinese about the color I wanted and how dark/light I wanted it to be. I tried speaking to him in English but he kept asking me questions in Chinese. I didn't quite get the color I wanted but he still made it work out and it looked good! I only did 1 bleach, and it took 4-5 hours. For my friend, she took 6 hours. For the price I paid, I think I would come back again. $260 for hair dye, $30 olaplex, and haircut is included!! Lee cut my hair today and I got exactly what I asked for. Perfect cut. Not even kidding. I always get a good haircut at J1, but today lee knocked it out of the park. Despite the fact that I am not clear at times, I showed Lee a picture and he executed it better than what I showed him. I cheated on my barber to come here and I'm never going back. They washed my hair and cut it, all for a really fair price. I mean you seriously can't beat that. I have really thick hair, and sometimes barbers have trouble with that. I think i found my hair salon to go to! First off, i got my hair done by Anson, who is amazing and so attentive. I'm definitely coming back to get my haircut from him. Second, I wanted to get an ash brown baylayage. I have pretty long hair (like boob length) and they quoted me at $230 (including cut). Looking at other reviews, it seems like it's about $230 regardless of length of hair. I showed him a couple of pictures and he said he'd try to achieve it, and he did! Also poor Anson, since i have SO much hair. He worked on it for 5 hours!!! And even after that, he took his time to style it. I wish though that they had given me a little bit more instructions regarding after-hair care, but nothing that the internet can't help with. I also don't speak chinese so there was a bit of language barrier. But Anson knows enough basic english to figure out what you want. My hair is a bit dry on the ends after bleaching, but i turned down their $90 hot oil treatment. I'll have to see how all of this self- after-hair-care turns out. If you have asian hair, this salon is definitely worth checking out! Especially if you're looking to get a baylayage. So happy that i found a salon in NYC instead of having to travel all the way to flushing / jersey! read more

The first time I did my hair from them, I asked for japanese straight and they finsessed it. It was last year around July. I come back this year to redo my hair and it turned out bad. I never do my hair because I dont trust nobody but they ruined it. My hair was back to being wavy so I decided to do it again at the same spot only for it to stay wavy even though I paid 180 for it. I came back a couple days again to complain how my hair is still wavy after I asked went and payed for it for them to straighten it. They told me to come back next time when the person who did my hair comes. I go back couple days again and he explained to me saying "your hair was damaged at the ends so we only straightened the top" then I told him "so this is okay? this is straiht to you?" he said "yes" and I said "if i do it i need to pay then? how much" he said 130 I got really upset because I really loved their salon bcause they did it good the first time. I was very unsatisfied with the results for the second time and if a customer is unsatisfied, they should have done something. I already payed 180 for the hair i expected them to do for me however, they asked me for another 130 for them to do it right. Now, my hair isnt straight like I wanted it to and like i payed for. I've never felt comfortable with getting my hair colored at a salon until J1. I don't like risking damaging my very dark Asian hair but this place knows what they're doing--not to mention, they are incredibly fashionable. For the cut I've usually been styled by Anson. I forgot who I had last, but for $28 he really gave me the cropped pixie look I wanted. They know how to work with thick wavy hair so they thinned it a lot, which I prefer. For the pink, Will and Jason did the bleach + dye. It took 3 rounds of bleach in 6-7 hours, but I anticipated it so I brought a book. I did this on a different day than the haircut. I usually walk in because I'm not confident enough in speaking Chinese to make an appointment over the phone lol. But they do speak some English, and you should always show your salon the hairstyle you want anyway. Will was very patient and meticulous--making sure it wasn't burning or too hot, and shampooing very thoroughly but gently. He and Jason made sure that it was even, and light enough for the shade of pink that I wanted. Will was very kind to offer me water now and then, and Jason even put a little gel on it before finishing. Both would give me a 20 min, 10 min, or 5 minute update on how long the rounds of bleach were before rinsing and washing. Surprisingly they managed to get it level 8 or 9 blonde without a lot damage! It was 200 since I have very short hair, and 30 for the Olaplex oil, which I think was very helpful for keeping my hair from breaking. So plus tip it was like $280. I highly recommend. As I was sitting there almost everyone that came in (and this is a really busy salon) asked for him and they had a wait time around 2 hours. They have great customer service, my hair is extremely thick and long so I'm not the easiest customer. I come here every 3-4 weeks for a haircut, and every ~3 months or so for a perm. This place is awesome for it's price ($18 for men's haircut and wash, and $50 for a perm). They are consistently good, and I always leave feeling good about my hair. When I first came here, I always asked for Jason (the boss), but it seems that everyone wants him to do their hair (esp the girls), so I now go for any of the other guys who are available and are just as good. The hair wash varies from person to person- some give you a really nice long wash and head massage, while others literally just wash it and you're done... Note they only speak Chinese (canto and mando, prob some other dialects too) and very little English so it might be hard to communicate. Edit: found out my usual guys name is anson - he's great at that he does and is consistent! Edit: 3 weeks since my last haircut so I came back today to get the sides and the back trimmed. The guy today did a nice and very meticulous job. The hairwash today and massage was great also! I'm not sure if it's just this place or perms in general but it seems like it's going away? I was referred to Jason by a friend. He is a very nice guy and patient. It was a very busy day when I went in that I had to wait for a seat, but he didn't rush with me at all. Still took his time and ask me questions about my hair condition, what I've done to it, how long ago I bleached it, the last time I dyed my hair, and what color I did, etc. He made sure he know about my hair well before he give me any advice of what to do with my hair and before he do anything to my hair. My friend and I made reservations and got our hair dyed at the same time at this salon. Salon is new and clean looking. My friend had really low expectations with Asian places due to experience. We both speak Chinese and brought pictures of how we want our hair to be. The staff are all very friendly but it seems like there were only two staff that spoke English. The picture didn't help since my friends hair did not come out like it. My result was closer to the picture I brought but the color was off too. However, both of our results were very nice and we were content. It is day 4 and I have received numerous compliments. The whole process took about 5 hours. I got Jason while Maggie worked on my friend. What we requested was balayage but Jason said that for balayage, its usually involves more processes that would greatly damage hair especially if its done on the same day. This information was relayed to me, so I took Jason recommendation and he somehow as able to color my hair with a bit of balayage result. Jason being the owner of the place often left another staff working on my hair while he attend to other customers. Maggie on the other hand was working on my friend the whole time. Both of us were quoted $230 which we were fine with. However, I didn't like the fact that he did not ask if we wanted to pay the extra $50 for the oil treatment and just automatically include it in the quote. We found out it was an option when the hair washer wanted to confirm that we had added the $50 oil treatment which we had no idea about. We had thought it was an additional $50 on top of the $230 and caused some confusion. The oil "treatment" was just an oil that was left in our hair for 10 minutes after our wash which I doubt helped. With all that's said, I was still satisfied with my result and would recommend this place as long as you can communicate and express what you want to the stylist. read more
