We stopped in without reservations and the server made a big deal even though the place was empty. We were led through a maze of small rooms with old wooden tables with mismatched chairs. We told the server that we were referred by the place we were saying and he arrogantly said " Everyone recommends us"like he could care less. His superior and snarky attitude was a real turnoff. We were not super hungry so we ordered a few starters and some drinks. The server who brought our food was very attentive and kind. The food wasn't outstanding, earthmoving or even unique. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. The greeter stopped by our table, one more time to advise us that the restaurant would be closed tomorrow as a group of 40 Asians rented the place out "because we are so good." His total attitude turned us off. As we left, the restaurant was not even 1/2 full, so I'm not sure why he was put out that we had not made reservations. Nice tapas place when visiting Obidos! Sadly the only 4 person table was right next to the bathroom, so not the nicest place to sit. My favorite tapas that we got here were the pork cheeks (super tender and juicy) and the cockles (tasted fresh and flavorful). Our group also got the blood sausage, but I'm usually not a fan so I didn't eat much. We also got the croquettes and the fried cuttlefish, both of which were just all right. Unfortunately, the waiter forgot one of our entrees, so it wasn't a good experience for us. First he forgot an appetizer order. He explained he was having memory issues because of a recent bout of covid. The food that we DID receive was pretty good. This quaint and cozy place offers homemade dishes that will leave you wanting more. oh and please try their bread! it's freshly made by them and is not available for purchase, we were lucky enough to meet the owner and told them we were so pleased by the bread he was kind to give us two loafs to take back with us! After spending the morning touring inside the walls of Obidos we popped outside the wall for some lunch. Having seen positive reviews for this spot we arrived and checked out their lunch specials. We were led through a maze of dining rooms in this "cave-like" restaurant to our cozy table. We each ordered a reasonably priced lunch special - red fish, the vegetable plat du jour, and spaghetti. Written as Ja!mon, Ja!mon on the sign. We were lucky enough to find our hotel (Hotel Real Obidos) in the same cul de sac/dead end as this delicious spot. And lucky because it was poring rain when we headed out. Be aware the cobblestone streets are very slick when wet. Jamon, Jamon is a petiscos (Portuguese tapas) restaurant. Small plates to share and enjoy as many as your appetite will allow. It's one of our favorite styles of eating so as to experience numerous local flavors. Our server was very patient with us as we tried to make our decisions. We were presented a basket of bread with butter and some olives. This occurs almost anywhere you dine in Portugal. If you try it, you will be charged. If not interested, just ask them to remove it. Today, we chose to partake. The breads looked delicious, one clearly made with corn. Similar to a heavy crusted corn bread. Served with an herb butter, both were delicious. A server came by while we looked over the menu with a plate of what looked like tempura fried beans. Which is exactly what it was. A specialty of the house-fried local runner beans. These are much larger than traditional green beans. Immediately we knew we had to try them. Unfortunately, they were the one disappointment of the meal. Clearly made ahead of time, they were a bit greasy and neither crisp nor hot. Served with a dip akin to a garlic aioli, this made them more palatable. Three plates really caught our eye-pork cheeks in a wine sauce, asparagus risotto, & head and tail on shrimp in olive oil, lemon, and garlic. These three dishes were outstanding. Tender pork was served in a rich wine sauce, the risotto was fluffy rich, and include still crisp asparagus tips, and the shrimp-while a bit of a chore-sweet and garlicy. The sauce made a great dip for the white loaf bread in our basket. Not a crumb was left of any of these. Our server was very attentive, wanting to know if everything was to our liking. The Portuguese people we have interacted with everywhere have been so personable and here was no exception. Dessert was an easy choice. Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The cake was deeply flavorful if a bit dry, but the ice cream took good care of that. We wished our stay in Obidos was longer so we could enjoy dining here at least once more. Next time. Recommended. One evening while visiting Obidos, we had looked up a restaurant on trip advisor, when we got to the restaurant the wait time was 1 hour so we decided to walk around to find another palace to eat. We did a day trip to Obidos from Lisbon and Jamon Jamon was our sole choice to dine at while we were in town. They offered a few lunch specials that were listed on the sign board outside, and all the entrees were very reasonably priced. We tried their salted cod, grilled pork in a cream sauce, and a pork stew which consisted of all kind of yummy pig pieces (pig's feet, sausage, leg meat, etc). The salted cod fillet was a very generous portion size and all dishes were accompanied with rice, fries, or potatoes as your accompanying starch. When we went in November, they were doing some kind of renovation on the roof, but they were completely opened so don't let that deter you from stopping in. They're located off the main streets that weave through Obidos Village but they're worth the very short walk. read more

I was staying in Peniche, and was recommended by a local to come eat here while visiting Obidos. It's slightly hidden after entering a narrow walkway just before the entrance to obidos and right after the parking lot. It was busy full of a mix of tourists and locals. I had the option of sitting inside or outside under some shade. Then I saw a dinner menu but was only given three options: seafood, meat, and vegetarian. I'm guessing the menu changes based on what fresh ingredients are available. The decor, hospitality, and food make it feel like you are eating over someone's house and having a home-cooked meal. I was excited to visit this place. The reviews were stellar and it was my first and only choice for Obidos lunch. The host seemed annoyed by our interest and angrily informed me that we had to wait over 30 min. He had no tables available, he said, although the restaurant looked half empty. There were variety of delectable tapas and sizable entrees and we opted for pork cheeks, tuna ceviche, sausage stuffed mushrooms, perfectly bread crumb crusted lamb racks, grilled octopus, served with very decent red wine. On the advise of our Airbnb host we walked from our villa to have dinner here last night. She said the place was run by two young men and they were wonderful. I disagree. We were told they were full. No, we could not wait because they weren't seating anyone else that evening. The door was literally shut in my husband's face. Literally bang....lock. Didn't seem to care a local sent us to them. Didn't seem to care we had no plan B. Not an ambassador of Óbidos. Very rude owner. There were no other people waiting and it was just the three of us. This was, without a doubt, one of the absolute best meals I had on my trip to Portugal. If you go, you MUST get the baked cheese appetizer. It was incredible. My husband got the octopus and I ordered their veal steak, which was enormous, but so delicious I ate every bite of it.
