My absolute favorite place to eat in Redding. Eating here feels like time travelling back to the 1980's for me, when I was a kid and used to eat at places in the East Bay. Some that had been around since as far back as the 1920's. I love the ambiance, there's no bright LED lights, and the booths have nice dim lamps give just the right amount of light. The filet is always smoky and cooked perfect, and the fried scallops are amazing! I keep wanting to try the rib eye but I like the filet so much I order it every time. The salad is nothing to write home about, just over dressed lettuce and what tastes like canned green beans. But who comes here for the salad anyway? Service here is top notch, very friendly and professional at the same time. You have to get here early on a Saturday night if you don't want to wait for a table. We got here about 4:30 and the place filled up by 5. If you love great steak, great service, and a great atmosphere, you'll love Jack's. read more

Wow, what a disappointment. $120 for two improperly cooked steaks, a pound of butter and gallon of salad dressing. Ordered a filet - medium (don't come at me, it wasn't mine), came out with no more than a sear. Cold, red, chewy middle. Also ordered a ribeye - medium rare. Came out with barely even any pink left in the meat. Fat was tough and chewy. I can do better with a ribeye from Walmart and my iron skillet. And next time I will. Or I'll just go to outback like I should've. Both steaks were barely seasoned at all. Let's talk about the salad. What in the cole slaw was that? It was like a 2 to 1 dressing to salad ratio. Baked potato was passable. The pound of butter and sour cream they serve to drown it in was appreciated but next time cut the amount down by half and take a few bucks off the tab. Place was also hot as Hades. Must've been at least 78 inside. Service was ~ok~. Only real standout was the younger dude who kept my water glass full. Hope he got part of the $20 tip. On the plus side, at least my bloody mary was so weak that there was absolutely no chance of me getting a DUI on the way home. I don't get the hype. People in Redding just have low standards. If you want a filet, go to Kobe. If you want a ribeye, just go to a chain (yeah it's that bad). If you want a good meal, go anywhere else. read more

Still the Best Steak in the World - 40 Years Later at Jack's In 1988, fresh out of training and suited up for my very first day on the job, I found myself sweating through a worsted wool suit in Redding, California--on what turned out to be one of the hottest days on record at a sweltering 118 degrees. A young African American kid from the inner city of Flint, Michigan, I felt completely out of place. My boss gave me one piece of advice before I called it a night: "Promise me you'll grab a steak at Jack's." So I did. I walked into a packed Jack's Grill, and the first thing I saw behind the bar wasn't a wine list or a maître d'--it was bull riding on TV. Bull riding! I nearly turned right around. But a promise is a promise. The host told me the wait would be 45 minutes to an hour--a perfect excuse to retreat to the comfort of my hotel and order room service. But something made me stay. When my name was called, I discovered Jack's had a policy I'd never heard of before: if you were a party of one or two, they seated you with other solo diners to fill a table. Yet again, I almost bailed. But everyone had been surprisingly friendly, so I stuck it out. And thank God I did. That night I ordered the filet mignon--and it wasn't just good, it was life-changing. Perfectly cooked, seasoned with something magical, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. It was hands down the best steak I'd ever had. That night marked the beginning of a love affair. For over a decade, every time work took me to Redding, Jack's was my non-negotiable dinner stop. And when I no longer traveled there for work? I'd still occasionally make the 2-hour drive from Sacramento just for that steak. Over the years, I've had the privilege of dining at some of the most renowned steakhouses in the world: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Hong Kong, Tokyo (even Kobe), Montreal, Vancouver, Rome, Paris, Saint-Tropez, you name it. The only place that even came close was a little gem in Rome's Jewish Ghetto--but even that couldn't quite top Jack's. Fast forward nearly 40 years later. I took my father to the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, and mid-track meet, a wild idea hit me: "If we head out right after this ends, we can make it to Jack's before they close at 10 PM." Five hours later, we pulled into Redding. Jack's looked almost exactly the same. And the steak? Still flawless. Still the best I've had anywhere on the planet. Location is somewhat small (& loud) with ALL THE REGULARS, but it makes you feel like one big family, while taking part in the history of Redding! Insider secret: Jack's opens it's doors at 4pm! This was my second visit and was just as good as the first time which was amazing. The steak, salad, exceptionally cooked baked potato (I didn't know that a baked potato could stand out) and the delicious garlic bread was outstanding. This time I added fried chicken out of curiosity and it was almost as good as my grandmas! And last but not least is the incredible service. I wish I lived closer. Jack's has the most unusual set of attributes to fall in love with. It's small. The service and the menu are very, very old-school. At the same time, somehow, it is spectacularly unpretentious. My steak was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked (medium rare throughout). The baked potato was also perfect. The salad that came before was abundant (three or four platefuls), chopped (classy touch) and already dressed (with the perfect amount amount of house-made dressing--I tried their 1,000 Island and loved it). The staff was friendly and personable, treated me as if I was already a preferred customer. Dang, they make it look easy! Friends said this was a good spot for steak, so we made a point to check this place out. Apparently, this restaurant was open during the building of the Shasta dam, and served the workers. I ordered the medium rare 10 oz New York strip and baked potato. The meal also came with a side salad and the dressing I ordered was the oil and vinegar. The steak came out perfectly cooked and was seasoned well. If you're not super hunger, then the 10 oz is perfect. The salad dressing was a little heavy on the vinegar for me even though I'm a big fan of vinegar. Overall: If you're in the mood for a solid steak, check this place out. read more

J and I shared the 16-ounce filet meal, which was absolutely ample food for two. Their house bleu cheese dressing is locally legendary and didn't disappoint. I had to resist the temptation to help myself to seconds and thirds to save room for the meat and potatoes. True to form, our steak was cooked to a flawless medium rare and I was pleased with the superb crust seared onto our cut. Word to the wise: beware the horseradish. They aren't messing around with any weaksauce cream; this stuff is borderline atomic. I underestimated its potency on my first bite and rapidly discovered next-level cleared sinuses (and a little wheezing and shortness of breath). At under $60, I felt both quality and quantity of food was superb. Service is friendly, albeit a little slow. Fortunately, we weren't in any rush, so that suited us just fine. We went to Jack's 30 years ago and found ourselves back in Redding when we went to Lake Shasta. We waited over a hour for our table of 11 and it was COMPLETELY worth the wait. The best service, best steaks, best salad, best garlic bread we have had in a long time. Ambiance was very soothing. I came in "hangry" and left with only smiles and a happy heart from our server. The atmosphere is unchanged--dark, cozy, with that classic old cash register that reminds you you're stepping back in time. The food has always been consistent. Personally, I've always loved the salads (especially with Thousand Island dressing), even though it's a steakhouse. The steaks are still very good--perhaps not quite as great as I remember from years ago, though that may simply be my tastes evolving. Either way, the quality remains impressive. Went on a Friday night around 6pm. Atmosphere is a cozy, dimly lit mid 20th century American bar. Ordered the 12 oz New York steak dinner along with a couple Tom Collins to drink. Steak was juicy and perfectly cooked with a nice crust. House cut fries were excellent. House made salad dressing delicious as well, I got the French. Drinks had generous pours and very reasonably priced. Friendly service all around from being greeted warmly by the hostess to always having a full glass of water. Once again we were not disappointed our steaks were perfect the butterflied shrimp were perfect after many,many dinners the steaks are still the best north of San Francisco. We arrived early so we were seated right away with smiles and careful greeting the hostess was amazing greeted both my wife and daughter-in-law a very warm pleasant evening. Believe it or not this is a favorite spot since childhood. Dimly lit with the atmosphere of any old great steakhouse. Each meal comes with a generous family style salad which is unique with French cut green beans tossed in and chilled to perfection and generous with a cracker basket. Steak is cooked to order and always perfectly done. Get the feel of a Chicago steakhouse without the price point. This was my first experience with this recommended restaurant. It took about 25 minutes for my partner and I to have our order taken. I ordered a medium rare steak with a baked potato. The attached is what I received. I have been to a plethora of steakhouses. I've never had a medium rare steak that was partially burnt. When I brought it to the waitresses attention, she told me "well that's what you ordered." I said, no, it's not. She then took it back and had the chef/kitchen make me another one to-go. The restaurant opens at 4pm on the dot, so if you are thinking you can sit at the bar with beverage and wait for seating to begin, you will wait on the sidewalk with the other early arrivals. We went on a Monday and there were approximately 6 people waiting. Friday evenings would probably stack up deeper, so keep that in mind. There is street parking and a small parking lot behind the restaurant. They take no reservations. It is a small, dark, intimate restaurant. Because of the small space, it is quite crowded. The back of another diner's chair was about "18 from my husband. We were in the far back booth on the right side beside the kitchen door and staging area. My husband ordered the 10 oz. Filet. I ordered the Ribeye. We shared an order of Prawns which were served with what tasted like house made tartar sauce. Salad dressings are made in-house, as well. Iced teas arrived in very small bar glasses. Iced teas are $3.75, and while you can refill as frequently as necessary, the tiny glasses for a non alcoholic beverage just seem... off. Vibes the OPPOSITE of hospitality, which is something any decent dining establishment should be on top of. After our order was placed, our salad arrived 15 minutes later and consisted of coarsely chopped iceberg lettuce, canned french style green beans and copious amounts of bleu cheese dressing which was watery from the soggy iceberg lettuce. Blue cheese had no chunks whatsoever. 30 minutes after ordering, prawns arrived. Why they were served 30 minutes ahead of our mains, like an appetizer I have no idea. But by the time we received our steaks, the prawns were cold. Sadly, they were glorious, gigantic, sweet prawns, and the star of the entire meal, but were cold. Steaks arrived 60 minutes after ordering, and were okay, but far from spectacular. The quality of the beef was good, but not great. One could tell these were "choice", but not Prime grade steaks. The taste made this abundantly clear. All during the meal, a young boy in his teens hovered CONSTANTLY, asking questions and removing dishes and utensils, frequently while we were still using them. Cocktail sauce disappeared before the prawns were consumed. This young man was INTRUSIVE. The best restaurants remove dishes quietly and without comment or questions. This was the polar opposite of that. We were not offered a dessert menu, so I can only assume they offer no dessert. The total for our meal was $156. $126 for the meal, with a $30 tip. I wouldn't have tipped as much but my husband is generous to a fault. I can flatly say, the tip wasn't earned. Not in the quality of the food, not in the service and definitely not in the price for a below average total experience. We will not return here, nor recommend. For a first time visitor, Jack's missed the mark badly to make a stellar first impression. This place is riding on it's kitschy Cowboys & Whores history and is really full of itself. read more
