I rented boards here for my son and nephew. Start to finish it was an easy transaction. I signed the necessary waivers, the boys picked their boards, and they were in the water within 10 minutes. The best things for me as the parent were 1) the price and 2) the flexibility. $10/ hr can't be beat. And for novice surfers, the fact that they could try and then come back and switch boards if needed took a lot of stress off of us to pick the perfect size or shape. Very happy we chose Jack's. *note that driving directions took us to a different business parking lot. Jack's is a kiosk in the parking lot in front of the pier. read more

Did lessons twice in a semi-private group 2-3 per instructor which I thought was the perfect amount of attention for first timers. Easy online booking. Next time, I would also supplement with surfboard rental for $10/hour or $30 per day to practice in between lessons. Season ends labor day so if you're interested in lessons after this, would recommend calling. Recommend coming during the week as the beaches are less busy. The surf lesson hut is right at the edge of the beach and the parking lot near the hotel's water park area. Check in and signing waivers are at the surf shack. Open cubbies (not secure) to leave towels, sandals, small ice cooler etc behind the shack. Outdoor open shower for general use to rinse off afterwards located behind the shack on the way to the beach also. Parking: Booking instructions say that there is a white 2-story parking structure across the street (unknown cost) as I did free street parking. read more

We made last minute reservations the day before and got a confirmation right away for a private lesson. If you're doing this for a first time and by yourself, I highly recommended paying a little more for private lessons. The lessons are on the southern end of Myrtle Beach off S. Ocean Blvd. and Farrow Pkwy. Look for the Springmaid Pier next to the Ellie Resort. You'll drive through the parking lot and find Jack's shack where you'll check-in. As a heads up, there didn't seem to be a place to change after the lesson. There's an outdoor shower that you can use to shower off but I'd recommend that you bring towels and a liner for your car. They have outdoor cubbies that you can store your stuff behind the shack. It's not secured so I wouldn't leave any valuables. But you can definitely leave a cooler with ice and water...you'll need it on a warm summer day. As for the experience from start to finish, Paige (manager) was really responsive to all my email questions and huge kudos to Joe, the instructor. He was great and patient and didn't seem to have a loss for energy during the entire lesson. If I find myself back in MB for another lesson, I'd definitely give Jack's a call. read more

I was skeptical and searched for sometime to find a reputable establishment that provided great instruction in a fun atmosphere. Based on the wonderful reviews I chose Jacks for my and myself. For reference my brother being a (24yr old, athletic, skateboarder beginner surfer) and I being (38yr retired three times over skateboarder, dancer/choreographer with no surfing experience) We had an absolutely BLAST!!! Megan was such a wonderful instructor and encouraged us every step of the way. If your nervous about the water don't be. You only go out as far as your comfortable. Typically waist deep unless you have some experience or your just ok with going out a bit further. The hour goes by fast but with all swimming/ fighting the waves to be back out and the excitement of getting up on your board & catching those waves an hour is exactly enough. If you could split the 2hr lesson into two days and do back to back days of 1hr lesson I would definitely pay for that!!! I had an awesome kayaking experience with Jack's Surf Lessons and Board Rentals and so many good things to say about them. Location: So convenient and perfectly located to rent out a kayak and use. Their rental shop is so conveniently located right on the Springmaid Pier on the beach and made it so easy to drag it on the sand and into the water. No need or hassle to transport the equipment to another location. Also, the free parking on the street or cheap parking in the garage across the street was super nice. Service: The person helping us was super nice, friendly, and helpful! Their hours were super accommodating and huge thanks for being the only rental place that was open in mid-March. Price: We rented a double kayak for $15/hour and probably the best rate in Myrtle beach. $15/hour or $45/day for a single or double kayak. They also rent out surfboards and paddleboards. Also provide tours and lessons. Option to book online as well!!!! Bottom line: I highly recommend this place to rent out kayaks, surfboards, and paddleboards. My friend and I booked an hour surf lesson, it was great! We arrived early and met the staff member teaching us to surf at the shack in front of Springmaid pier. We parked in the white parking deck directly across the street. Due to corona, no one was staffing the shack, but the instructor met us just before our scheduled time. He carried our surf boards to the sand, gave us some land instruction, then into the water we went. We had a lot of fun despite not actually being able to ride a wave in. The boards they use are a foam. It wasn't what I was used to and was kinda hard to control. The instructors braved LOTS of jellyfish in the ocean-kudos to them! They got stung multiple times to help us try to catch a wave. Our instructor also taught us a little bit about finding waves to ride-which was really helpful! Would highly recommend! read more

Not happy with my experience. These 5 star ratings are lies. Jack wanted to send me in the water in bad weather, even the lifeguard had a "no swim" sign. We were in MB for a few days and wanted surf lessons for my kids. The day of the lesson it rained. I mean cats and dogs x20. Still our instructor undaunted went out with them taught the full lesson. This was by far one of the more significant experiences for my son and I vacationing at Myrtle beach in 2019. My 8 year old and I tried surfing for the first time. The instructor was very patient with us and took his time to ensure our safety and experience was nothing short of amazing. My son walked away with a new level of confidence in himself. What we got was a memory of a lifetime, a story my son told to everyone. Nothing short of perfect. We also added on a photographer for our lesson. He did a fantastic job capturing the experience. Jack took us out on a private guided paddled board tour of the Waccamaw River. It's a lovely secluded experience where you can lose track of time. Jack is thoroughly knowledgeable and very friendly. It's well worth the guided tour since it's very confusing to navigate the loops and there are some tricky portions. Additionally having someone point out the wildlife you would probably miss is great. We got to see a sea otter on our tour! We did our tour three hours before sunset in mid March with a high of about 50. In the summer you will probably see more wildlife but there will also be mosquitos near dusk/dawn so be prepared! read more

After calling Jack's a few hours prior to our tour, we were told that no instructor had been found for us nor would they be able to find one in time. It took us calling them to even find out we would be unable to go. In conversation with Jack's, we were told "people are on vacation so we don't have instructors right now." If you care about your safety and enjoyment in the water I URGE you to stay away from this place. The instructors are way too young and inexperienced compared to the other company that we took lessons with just two days before with another company. We took a 2 hour surfing lesson and they did not consider the water conditions. It is essentially dangerous for anyone who is not comfortable in the water It was SO bad that even the instructors had a hard time managing. And yet, they decided to press on with the class. We are not talking about not being able to surf. We are talking about a current that was so strong that it was practically impossible to get in the water, let alone surf. I eventually gave up after 15 minutes of at the very least trying to walk in far enough. To be clear I grew up on an island and have been in the water since Im 2 years old. This was not a fear thing. My husband decided to stick it out but it was an utter and catastrophic disaster and they had no consideration to us who had never surfed before. There were teaching a couple of kids there at the same time we were there and I was honestly afraid for them. Really need to be mindful of the conditions and the people they hire for this. read more

Our morning 2 hour lesson got off to a slightly late start due to Myrtle Beach "traffic". The instructor was good and attentive. About 45 minutes into the lesson a second group arrived and when they got in the water, the two instructors reunited. Even with a good stretch of beach, the instructors stood within a few feet of each other. This put the students within a few feet of each other and our 2 person lesson became a 4 person lesson, which resulted in way less reps.....an important aspect (I'd think) of learning to surf. Nice beach, good size waves for beginners, nice instructors and I did have fun (and caught a few waves)...just make sure when you are out there that they don't 'merge' lessons. read more

I took a group lesson here with 3 other friends about 2 months ago and it was awesome! My friends and I all have backgrounds in skateboarding and snowboarding, so we figured it was about time to take it to the water. Our instructor, Josh, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and had a great approach to helping all of us get on the board. By the end of the lesson we had all caught a few nice waves and I was even able to catch a few totally on my own! If you want to start learning how to surf then this is the place to go. Ok. So learning how to surf at 44 is challenging but I had a great time with a great crew. Special thanks to Luke for the patience and pointers and for Jack attempting to teach me some slightly more advanced techniques (the board went where it needed to but I invariably went in the opposite direction). If you are in the neighborhood and are looking for something to do and always wanted to try your hand at surfing then this is on my recommend list. I love the water!! ! have done all kinds of water sports but I've never been Paddle Boarding and decided to take the family. All of us had an amazing time navigating through the Waccamaw River seeing beautiful nature and exploring. The guide did a great job helping us with this new adventure and it was actually easier than I thought it would be. Each of us had an amazing time and all agreed we would definitly do it again.
