The fact that everyone one makes mistakes is should be obvious to us all. It is how mistakes are…read morecorrected that makes the difference and such is the case with my experience with H & R Block. H & R Block made a mistake on my taxes in 2006. I took out a "Peace of MInd" (POM) policy that covers my tax, fines and interest liability if any mistakes were made in their filing of taxes. Not too many weeks after filing I received a letter from the IRS. I took the letter and my POM policy back to the H & R Block office. They immediately made good on the Federal claim. Now all I had to do was wait on the GA Dept of Revenue amended return to be filed and to settle with them. It is at this juncture where we find the rub. That was in early 2007. Jump to March 2010. I receive a letter from Ga Dept of Revenue stating that I owed close to $3000 in taxes and penalties. I get a big lump in my throat but call the H & R Block office to make an appointment. I go on the office and am treated well and apologized to over and over. I sit down with the tax expert and we review the original claim, the W-2's, the POM plan and payments to the IRS. The agent says the amount is correct and that she will help me. She calls her district manager and they agree to pay the taxes, fines and penalties. I go home feeling at ease, thinking that the matter was resolved. All I had to do was call the GA Dept of Revenue and explain the situation and tell them H & R Block handled the return, please stop "the meter" and that i would mail the check as soon as I received it. About 2 weeks later I receive a check from H & Block, to my astonishment it is not for the amount that the GA Dept of Revenue said was owed. Now we are at the point of high anxiety and where H & R Block begins to fail me. I can't get anyone to answer my calls. I try every number given to me, they all roll over to an answer center where each time I call I get another reason for my trouble in getting any service, another phone number that goes unanswered. I leave many messages with the operators. I begin to get phone messages on my voice mail asking me to call such and such person, whom I call and explain my situation to them, only to find out they can't help me (they are only authorized to answer calls). I grow frustrated, anxious and concerned. I call the GA Dept of Revenue to discuss my situation and explain to them that I am addressing the issue and am given some information that is very surprising about H & R Blocks handling of my return. In the meantime I finally get someone from H & R Block to return my call that can help me. I am told that the person that originally helped me was incorrect that they could only do "X" and that was all the POM policy covered. I get frustrated as well as angry. I inform this person that I was told it would be handled and that it was H & R Block that created this monster and it was they that had to slay the dragon, not me. I was told that the manager that made the decision was incorrect and didn't have the authority to the decision that my claim would be paid. Astonished I asked this manager how could that happen? I heard the manager state that H & R Block would take care of the issue and now I was being told by a manager at the same level that they didn't have the authority to make such a decision and that they had made a mistake. "Unbelievable" was all I could muster; I was having a hard time accepting this and a harder time controlling my frustration. At the end of my conversation this district manager told me that she would have her boss review the case and that I would be called on the following Monday by the Manager of the the manager. Monday I receive no call from the upper tier. I did get a message that I would get an email or message saying I would be contacted. The meeting was set up and the call came through. As usual pleasantries were exchanged and apologies made. I explained as I had several times apologies were nice but there was still the tax liability to be handled and the GA Dept of Revenue doesn't accept apologies. I explained the scenario over, H & R Block presented their case mentioning that they had even returned the money I paid them originally to process my taxes. I was told someone made a mistake (another apology) and that was all they could do. I had prepared for this eventuality and had consulted my lawyer, who said this is was exactly what H & R Blocks approach would be and that their POM policy could not be limited. I really didn't want to take this route, I work on the principal that if someone told me something would be taken care of then I accepted that as fact. After a few more minutes of back and forth banter this manager asked for another week to review the situation and she would call me this coming Thursday. Stay tuned for AS The Block Flops....
