I am writing this in December of 2022 and the Rev. Annette Mayer is the head priest. She is also wonderful, warm, peaceful and truly loving. The weekly service is Eucharist (Lord's Supper) and and the liturgy is traditional. That said, they welcome all baptized Christians to the table for communion and all people are invited for a blessing. They also have prayer services, silent hour, and service ministry to the broader community. If you are looking for a church, check this place out. I love it.

Actually, my cousin attends and I knew it was a nice welcoming place. As soon as you walk in, it just felt loving. People were smiling, greeting one another. And being that it is BHM, everyone was dressed in African attire. So pretty! We(my daughter and I) arrived early, so the praise team began their mic check as we grabbed really good seats on the main floor of the church. The church filled up FAST. And it was a packed house!! Wow! Everyone was so kind! People danced in the isles and sang along together and it was really beautiful. I was excited to see a full band with HORNS!!!!! The brass was in the place making beautiful music! Wow, they have a tight band! I am a lover of music. I can hold a note:) And I was very happy to hear such wonderful sounds in this church house! The preaching was funny, relatable and thought-provoking. The preacher was thoughtful and spoke well. He didn't scream and yell. His life applicable examples were helpful and understandable. You could really FEEL THE LOVE IN THE PLACE. As a total stranger, I didn't feel out of place, weird or even left out. It was truly a God filled service with good singing and dancing and music and preaching and WOOOOHOOOOO!!!! I was very happy this was the church I decided to visit on Sunday. If you live in the South Suburban area (Matteson, IL), I encourage you to give this place of worship a visit. What a great way to start my week!

Some Fish Frys just don't provide a good piece of fish, and that ruins the visit because that is the main reason for a Fish Fry Friday ... but at St. John's the fish was excellent, the sides were plentiful and well brought off, and the community feel in the basement location was a winner. Similar to many other Fish Fry Friday churches, the neighborhood school kids provide the service for delivering food to the tables ... and they did a great job. Besides the fish offering, the nicest extra was a salad bar where you could put together whatever struck your fancy, and could go back for seconds. Nice selection of desserts also, and beer and wine were available for purchase with your meal. In addition to the dine in seating where they could easily seat over a hundred people, there was a big business in to-go orders. There also was live music in one corner of the room where a two-piece mom-and-pop kept up a nice background. Parking was easy-peasy, since the church has a parking lot in back. The…read moreschool on the other hand keeps increasing its prices every year and Illinois residents and their children have to dish out almost $8,000 for one year. You can get $500 knocked off by doing volunteer work but not all parents are able to do that. With the yearly cost going up every year by 2028 tuition will be ,near or even over $10,000 for a year. The school doesn't have air conditioning, no central air or window units. Theres a large fan in the hallways and rooms pushing hot air around. Kids are always getting sick as my own had gotten sick atleast 3 times during a single school year. By now it's safe to say I have an issue with the price, but to dig deeper I feel the school doesn't help unlock children's full potential. Teachers don't respond to emails directly even though they tell parents to email them with any or all questions. Kids get a lot of days off these days at this school and for the amount of money that is dished out the school could've bought atleast window unit ACs for the classrooms or even central air many times over. The only upgrade the school had done was a flag pole , a small kiddy park and new heating "which breaks down all the time". I recommend private schools over public school everyday of the week but again the cost is outrageous especially when the school has gotten little to no upgrades.

Let me start at the beginning. First we were lead downstairs to the sanctuary for a southern style breakfast. Yes, they have their own little kitchen to cook and serve the food. We had eggs, grits, sausage and such. You know, regular Southern Breakfast. It was nice of course, nothing fancy, but just plain nice. After the breakfast we were escorted upstairs to a really brite church, the pews are very well polished and the glass, Oh the glass indeed. with its "not so Tiffany" knock off but beautiful none the less. Yes, the ornate glass was stunning in its own right, not intricate in the least, not so polished as you would see in an older church, but simple and elegant. I was taking photos and wondering, when will they sell these? Oh that's bad to say, but I am living for the beauty it threw across the congregation with the sun shining ever so brightly. I was happy and content just with starring, although I am sure people thought I was nuts using a camera and taking photographs. But as a YELP-er, I must do it for the mass! Anyhow, take it or leave it, the church is beautiful, nothing super spectacular but for me, that wasn't the point. I loved the look and the genuine beauty and the fact that they kept up with it. Nice indeed.
