Jake's has been in this location forever it seems, well as long as W. Wendover's been around. It's a 24-7 style diner with a drive thru (kinda cool), and usually a full parking lot. It has had some interesting happenings over the years, as all nite eateries seem to, especially in the over night hours - even got hit by a car about a year ago. The restaurant is owned by the Blythe family (2nd generation), which owned Jan's House on W. Market for many years, so there is diner gravitas here. They serve breakfast anytime, and the breakfast menu is diner typical, and the pricing is very reasonable. They offer burgers, hot dogs, the usually sandwiches, salads (including a great Grilled Chicken Salad), steaks & chops, a few standard plates, a daily Blue Plate Special, and Fish Fry Friday. The Blue Plate Special on Tuesday is Country Fried Steak (aka Chicken Fried Steak in Tejas), so off we went, because you can never get too much country fried steak. The place was busy for 11 AM - 80% of the booths taken, 8 or 10 at the counter, and even a few eating outside. Alice went with the Country Fried Steak with White Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, and Pintos, with a Corn Muffin kicker. I went with a breakfast order - two eggs over medium, grits, Liver Mush, biscuit, and a side of Hash Browns. The foods was out fairly quickly, not a bad feat considering the customer pressure - these folks move some serious food. The Country Fried Steak is exceptional, super, outstanding - the very best in this area in my considered opinion, and the white gravy is "real and spectacular". The meat is of a very nice quality, nicely breaded, and well cooked to a nice outside crust - never underestimate the value of an outside crust, whether on steak, hamburger, pork BBQ (bark or outside brown), fried chicken, fried seafood, or home fried potatoes, and much more. The canned pintos were very well seasoned, while the potatoes were a bit of a flop - the veggies here are not there strong suit. The corn muffin had some sweetness, and some dryness - an item easily passed by on the next visit. The biscuit is excellent - very well sized, loaded with flavor, and just the right density - throw some Smucker's Grape Jelly or some honey on that sucker, and you got dessert. The breakfast meal was quite nice - the eggs cooked to order, the grits tasty if a bit watery, the liver mush was as it should be with a nice crust on the outside (there we go again), and the hash browns were the shredded, frozen kind, but were excellent in taste, and a nice portion - perhaps the best hash browns of this genre I've found. This place is what it is, a 24/7 diner that serves breakfast the entire time they're open, and they're always open - seems simple enough, but in a world were so many people look for new & inventive ways to be offended (horrors!), that point should be made, and understood. This is not a place for those with food concerns (real or imagined), or those who want to "eat healthy", or those who are looking for the new, the creative, the buzz of the week, or those who think tofu is a super food. Research the restaurants you choose, it reduces ignorance and disappointment - well, ignorance only so much. The diner food here is more than solid, the wait process is generally good, but subject to lapses (the girl, she does get weary). The place is loud, really loud, middle school cafeteria loud - perhaps the loudest restaurant in the area without boom box piped in music (think Rody's). There is nothing soft and absorbent in the building, the noisy bounces around, and shirt tails. The food was awful, and it had to be sent back to the kitchen twice because it was not cooked right. The wrong food came out both times. The cooks were even giving the server a hard time. We felt sorry for her, and we left her a tip. We just had to go and get food from somewhere else. read more

It was time to get off the road for a moment on my trip back home on a Saturday night around 9. Did not want a fast food burger and didn't want to take much time off the road for a meal at one of the Wendover Ave. restaurants. First I filled at the car at Sheetz and then crossed the road to go to Jake's diner. I ordered a fried bologna sandwich and fries with sweet tea. The order was quickly ready. I was visiting from Charlotte and this was next to my hotel so I have it a shot and I'm glad I did. Good was great and everything coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. Must try for breakfast as that seems to be their sweet spot. Khadja was flying around, running food, greeting guests and was outstanding while being very very nice to everyone. Foods not so great anymore at this location. I've been going here since I lived in the neighborhood behind the establishment on Big Tree Way. Food use to be fresh and cooked perfectly, wait staff cared to write down the order so the cooks could get the order right. Possibly take a bottle of water with you because service is slim to none depending on what time you go to eat. Morning is usually the better time to go it seems. Last visit I had Ashlea. She's rude and acts as if being a waitress for 20 years makes her the best waitress there. Well it dosent! I'd rather have good service and even be slow compared to an attitude and absolutely rude. I know it's hard on restaurants being understaffed and overworked but it dosent give her the right to be so terrible when I'm spending my money in this establishment and definitely am not rude to her in any way. To Courtney the manager at this Jakes, could you possibly train staff to be a little more at least subtle with the rudeness. At least smile even if it's fake! Some of the best breakfast in town. The breakfast crew is the best. The few times I have been at night the crew is not that great. The food overall is very good. Best fried liver pudding in town. All the girls on the morning crew are awesome. Sometimes the parking lot is a little crazy with large trucks and such but it's worth the hassle to eat here. I rated one star because it won't let you do none. I phone ordered 12 wings. Half mild and half lemon pepper. It was a take out order, and what I got today was a disgrace. The mild wings were DRY as hell and the lemon pepper were plain not lemon pepper. The kids ate 2 before I realized what we received. I called back in and spoke with the same girl who took my order and told her my order was wrong and she had the audacity to say bring them back and we'll remake them. My brother took them back. 2 were eaten and when the manager was addressed they said no refund no discount for the double trip EVEN though they did in fact send the order wrong to begin with. By comparison to Waffle House because of the 24 hour convenience, there is definitely more seating here. The service is friendly, and the breakfast food is awesome. They use Neese's liver pudding so that's always a win for me. The chicken wings are really good also. And the sauces are great. It can get pretty crowded at after club hours, but overall it's worth the wait. read more

I used to stop by Jakes quite often and always ordered from the breakfast menu, their pancakes, waffles, french toast and omelettes have always been pretty great to me and they do a pretty good hot wing too. I stopped by on a Saturday and thought I'd try something different, so I went with Saturdays "Blue Plate Special" which was 2 grilled pork chops, 2 sides, bread choice (biscuit for me) and a drink. The Blue Plate Special changes daily, a different meat with the 2 sides, bread and drink. The pork chops were great, very tender with good flavor, the sides were ok, nothing really homemade, the mac'n cheese definitely isn't homemade and neither are their biscuits. Jakes is a great little diner, they have one other location that I know of, but never visited. Great place to get breakfast any time of the day or night as they are open 24 hrs and you can call in your order and pick it up at their 24 hr drive-thru window...like I did my Poke Chops. read more

The grits were so-so, the omelet was good and the breakfast club was okay. But the people really make this a stand-out diner. They are cool, easy going and relaxed. Working class folks, regular people, folks maybe a little down on their luck...all here being welcomed and looked after like the neighborhood diner in the old days. Back when you knew who was coming through the door, what they wanted and how long they might stay for a chat. Yeah, Jake's looks like a pretty cool place...at least that's how I see it. Ok you can read the other reviews and I will say the theme of overall dirty diner does pretty well sum it up. The place could use a good scrubbing. Now for the meal, group of 3 all had something different. Overall food was decent at a super low price! Our service was above average. I had the pork chops they had good flavor, but were a bit over cooked, zucchini squash medley grilled side was amazing, green beans- were like they straight out of a can. Wish I would have asked for chop cooked medium or medium well ( that's on me though, I did not specify when ordering) also I would have ordered double of the zucchini squash medley and not got the beans if I ordered again. Price to value would make this a 4 star, cleanliness makes it a 3 star; clean up the act and get better reviews! read more

The date and time of my experience was January 23rd roughly 1am the reason I'm leaving this review is so hopefully the management sees this and realize who they scheduled to perform in the circus of a service experience I just received from their establishment. Blatant disregard to the flavor of the wings ordered and then argumentative when it was brought to her attention (wish I knew her name so I can warn others to just keep driving) I was told that the solution to my incorrectly flavored wings was to take the cup of lemon pepper seasoning and season them myself sh*t was ridiculous EF up a customers food then tell them to fix it ....? First time I visited I had breakfast at night which was really good and the server was nice and great. Last three times the server sucked, last two times got the same bad server that ignored our refills and seemed bothered to describe anything on the menu which needs to be updated because the raised prices aren't properly listed. First time she just left without telling us because her shift was over and 15-20 mins later we went to the counter and no body knew we were even in need of a new server. Terrible. This time the wings were soggy and the chips were way greasy. The fried chicken was old and chewy with soft thick breading like hospital food. Mashed potatoes were runny with salty, fake gravy and gross. Mac and cheese was also old and dry and dark orange and now my stomach hurts. Place barely hits, and misses really badly 3/4 times. Leaving the CIAA, I picked up my brother for breakfast before I headed home. He chose Jake's Diner on Wendover Ave. We seated ourselves and a waitress came immediately and got our drink order which was coffee and water no ice. The coffee was good but the water was awful. It tasted like water that had been sitting or from an old faucet. Yuck! I ordered the eggs with grits and bacon and order pancakes that I had to share with my brother because it was so huge. The grits were room temperature but okay. The eggs were OVER cooked. The bacon was the only good item on my plate. Needless to say, my morning was anything but superb after my meal. This was a surprise. I've driven by Jake's several times but never stopped. So glad we did stop this time. There serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and the food is standard dinner food, but they do simple well. It wasn't as tidy as I would like, but the food made up for it. I walked inside to ask how long the wait was and the lady at the front said they had 2 tables open, but 2 people in front of us, so she had no idea how long it would be. I called In for a to go order. The waitress who served me was very polite and patient. I ordered a bologna sandwich with a fried egg and turkey bacon in it. Since they were out of the veggie sides I ordered fried okra. Which is a vegetable the last time I checked but I wanted green beans. However the sandwich was decent at best, it was quite tiny even with a boat load of things in it. The bologna was wayyyy over cooked, and usually I'm the one who likes food that's well done but well done and burnt are not the same thing. Overall the sandwich did its job at filling my stomach but it did not put a smile on my face, maybe it wasn't supposed to? The okra was absolutely... bland. On a normal day, I would overlook a place like Jake's diner. It looks a bit grungy on the outside, and doesn't really stand out a whole lot among all of the restaurants and stores in the area. That said, since I was staying at one of the hotels down the street and didn't feel like waiting for the light to change at Wendover, I decided to give the place a try for a late lunch. The food is unbelievably inexpensive. My burger, fries and a drink came to around 6bucks, which is almost heard of outside of McDonalds/Wendys/Insert generic fast-food place here. There was a homeless guy begging for beer on the street outside which was interesting to watch as well. (Ahh, the sweet smell of urban decay) :) The place has a drive thru, which might be nice for some people as well. Open 24 hours also! I may have to pick up some late night food while in town! The only downside that I could come up with? The restroom smelled AWFUL! It smelled like someone urinated on everything in there and then let it dry. I almost had to hold my breath! That said, I didn't need to use the toilet..just went in to wash my hands, so the urge to retch was brief. It's a comfy place to sit and relax for a bit. Sort of like Starbucks without the Yuppies or jazz music. Worth a try for a quick bite with some of the chums. read more
