I absolutely love James Dun. I won't let any other hairdressers cut my hair - I love them!! This particular branch is the first and original. It is very trendy and has a strong organic feel to it. The floor always grabs my attention, it's like pebbles but they're tiles...! The smell is the first thing that hits you in this particular branch, it smells very strongly of herbs and natural scents. Their main shampoo's, Aveda, boasts itself on being totally natural and organic. You're welcome, mother nature. When you first sit down, you are given a bit of paper with various options for free extra's. They offer free massages - hand and head - free make up and free mini-facials - bliss!! They offer you a variety of scents to choose from and can analyze your choice if you want. While you get your hair washed they give you an extra scalp massage too!! AMAZING! Every single time I've been here, I've left with a smile on my face and a great head of hair. I wouldn't go anywhere else! read more

My sister paid out the nose for this place and got an awful haircut that had long bits hanging off it that she had to cut herself when she got home. (They were definitely not intentionally stylish bits!) She also specifically asked not to have a bob but she got one anyway. Her friend who is a hairdresser was also shocked when she saw this haircut. I would not go here and pay that much to risk getting something that bad. read more

A really nice hair and beauty salon/spa. The prices are quite steep here, but it is luxurious. The establishment is in a great location in the city centre, near to the Bon Accord shopping centre. There is also a little cafe in the salon where you can sit and have cakes and coffee or juice. They also sell a wide variety of body lotions, shampoos and other body products. I have been here for hair cuts quite a few times, and my mother goes regularly. Often whilst you are getting your hair cut, another therapist will come and massage your hands, which feels wonderful. You are always offered a drink and magazines and it all feels very professional. You pay for your hair cut depending on the hair dresser and how experienced they are. They decide their own rates, the more experience they have, the more they charge. I have also had my eyebrows waxed here and it costs a whopping £12, compared to the £5 I usually pay at my local salon. This is a lovely hair dresser/beauty salon but it is definitely an upmarket place and is quite pricey. It is a really nice treat to have but I can't afford to go here all the time. read more

James Dunn's House is an old building in the centre of Aberdeen which houses an Aveda salon and cafe. I have used both the hairdresser and beauty salon. It is a large building and you enter and go to the left for the busy reception area and shop selling Aveda products. There are lots of very trendy staff around! The hairdresser is lovely, all the staff are very good and you feel pampered after going there. The hairdresser is set in a conservatory area with glass ceiling. One note, they will ask if you would like tea or coffee but they take it from the cafe and add it to your bill, unlike normal hairdressers where you normally get the coffee included! The beauty salon and spa area is downstairs, the therapy rooms are large and relaxing. I have had numerous treatments, the facials are amazing! I like that they turn the lights very low and play relaxing music, you also get a glass of water afterwards and plenty of time to waken up and come back down to earth! The treatments are exensive but actually not as expensive as other Aveda salons (London in particular). You will leave feeling pampered and relaxed and wondering when you can fit in another visit! read more

Rudeness, Disprespect and Disgusting treatment of a client of three years...so happy to be out of your establishment. The Aveda name should be ripped off of your business. Oh to be able to give zero stars. I have fine hair. In all my years of having my hair coloured, nobody has done to me what JD Aberdeen have done. I was a client for three years, choosing an Aveda salon purposely and tipped my hair dresser very well by UK standards. After the third time having to have "bleeds" fixed in my highlights, once for my wedding and the last time by a woman who was clearly annoyed she had to do the work at all, not mumbling ONE word in nearly 90 minutes except to call over a manager and talk super critically about my regular stylist. And, my stylist during my next visit was called aside to be asked why my appointment was taking "so long". I was advised, then and there, that from now on, due to the thickness of my hair, I'd be charged nearly double. Not in over 25 years of colouring my hair, at some of the best salons in Los Angeles/Beverly Hills, have I been told I had thick hair (and even in Beverly Hills, I paid less than here). I paid my bill and left asking to speak to the manager of the salon at his convenience. I was phoned a few days later by the manager who spent an excessive amount of time on the phone telling ME what was wrong with ME and how wrong I was, and my husband was witness to this conversation as I made sure to have it on speakerphone. In my years as a retail manager in my younger days, I was never advised to treat a client, a REGULAR client especially, so poorly and with such disrespect. I was even told "if you can't afford our fees..." which is ridiculous because I can, and I have zero issue paying good money for good hair. In fact, it's one of the things I happily over spend on as long as the service and process is meeting expectations. No effort was made to retain me as a client, no apology was offered and very quickly took my business elsewhere to a better colourist where I've not had any "bleeds" and have been made to feel comfortable and I leave happy. I've never been so completely and totally disrespected by an establishment in my life. I could pay anything I like to get my hair done, it's a bit of a shame for YOU that your management chose to be so rude, that I now spend that money elsewhere. James Dun's House, you are a smudge and an embarassment to the Aveda name. I won't even walk through your doors for a bottle of shampoo, I go out of the way to order it online. I've heard many stories about the manager at this salon, and his reputation is always the same, he's a bully and he's always accused the client of being in the wrong. Well, I guess my 20% tips and my over £200 services every six weeks aren't that important. Nor is the over £100 I used to spend every couple of weeks on products in the salon. You, are a joke! read more

The beauty salon here is brilliant & all the beauty therapists are lovely, chatty & do a great job! You definitely come out feeling revitalised! The hair salon is a bit hit or miss, my old stylists (Steph & Rebecca who have now left) were fantastic & every time was a great experience & really happy with results! Lately however the level of service has slipped dramatically and I am now in process of looking for a new salon. When paying so much you expect a great experience, on a few occasions now I haven't received a consultation on my cut until my colour & shampoo has been done already because the stylists have been too busy. You are left for long periods of time & small touches like magazines aren't looked into (I'm early 20's and got given 2 magazines for older women?), they don't seem to listen & tend to do what they what like, a few other reviews have also mentioned, and overall it seems rushed & like there's not a lot of care & attention. Stylists seem negative & you don't leave the salon feeling good & relaxed. It almost feels like some staff are laughing at you, & even on entering the front desk started laughing when walked in & one walked away smirking which isn't the best first impression! Overall I used to love visiting this salon, it is beautiful & I love the Aveda products although I feel it's lacking attention to detail & overall customer service which is sad because I used to love it so much & recommended a lot of people to visit here. read more

I have been to this salon before and had amazing service and left really pleased. This time I had possibly the worst hair dye job and customer service I've ever experienced. I came in and specifically asked for a dark blonde colour, what I was left with was a sore, over bleached scalp that was then toned to a purple tint. The staff were friendly but rushed me out, with two members of staff dying and and then blowdrying my hair. I did not expect to pay £130.00 for such a bad job and service level. I decided to call the salon and complain. It took 2 full working days and about 5 phone calls to get through to anyone senior. After explaining my situation to the salon manager I was then asked if I was aware of what level of skilled stylist I had booked myself in for, even though I still paid £130.00 which I would say is a price that should reflect quality. I was then blamed for my hair, being told that my regrowth was the problem. I have now been refunded money to cover getting my hair fixed somewhere else as I will NOT be returning to this salon ever again. I would never recommend this place to anyone, especially if you are blonde as they will bleach your hair and you will end up with white, damaged hair. read more

I always used this hairdresser along with my sister and mum, till my hairdresser was off sick and I got another person to cut my hair who wasn't of the same level as I wanted, well my hair was a mess!! I think my face was telling the reception lady how I was feeling, she did ask if I was happy and I said yes, well when I got out of the shop I burst out crying, and was so upset about it the whole day, to make matters worse I was going to a wedding the next day, the receptionist obviously wasn't buying my yes everything is fine as later on that evening I had a call from her just to double check and I explained that no I wasn't happy with it and that I was going to a wedding the next day, well she fitted me in with one of the partners the next day and a great job she did and off I went to the wedding looking good and feeling good. I didn't go back to have my hair cut agin till two weeks ago as I felt still embarrassed about complaining. So I booked a partner for my hair cut thinking That it will be a great cut...I know it's a pair of scissors that they have and not a wand, but if you look and listen to your client I think this helps,I explained that I couldn't have my hair cut in a bob as I have wavy hair and this style is no good for me as my hair is just a mess....what did i come away with....yip a bog standard bob that has been left too thick at the back and just looks odd! Now the hairdresser did say when they were drying my hair that they needed to work hard to dry it straight at the back because of the curl, if that's a hairdresser saying this how do they think, I'm going to manage to dry my hair at the back straight...this is a case of doing what they want and not listening and thinking how I'm going to manage my hair after the hair cut Now I paid £67 for a cut and now I'm gonna have to go get my hair cut somewhere else again as I'm really not happy and no way will I call them up and complain but I'll defo not be going back! And I want everyone to read this and think about having your hair cut here, they are ment to be one of the best, I'd say I would of got just as good a haircut at a local hairdressers for half the price, ok so you won't get a 2 minute head massage, that I feel really uncomfortable having done anyway! As I said if this is a partner who is training up folk what hope is there for anyone that goes there...nobody listens! read more

I called up the reception to book my first appointment with JDH, Aberdeen and requested the receptionist to help me choose the appropriate type of pedicure (they have 3 different kinds) that would suit my needs as I was back from a long 3 months holiday with a ragged pair of feet and dead skin on my heels (I literally spelt all this out to her).On arrival I was offered a drink and the staff was extremely professional and courteous. I reiterated my requirements and the girl who was meant to do my pedicure had told me I wasn't booked on the proper treatment and that she will try to do what she can. However, the pedicure was a total waste of £22!! Cuticles were not cut/pushed back properly (I opted for a no nail polish as I had mehendi on my nails which I had applied from a country I travelled during my holiday), heels and toes still silvery/flaky (dead skin not removed) and no exfoliation/moisturization. My pedicure was over in about 20 minutes as I wasnt having a nail polish. Although exfoliation/moisturization may not have necessarily been a part of the pedicure I was booked on, I wish she had done something to rectify the scenario or atleast do the basics right (cuticle/nail trimming/buffering). Was very very disappointed to pay for such a lousy appointment. read more

I really love aveda products, have gone to the covent garden aveda salon for years so at this aberdeen branch I was expecting a really good quality cut and finish. However, I entered the salon and there was loud club music pumping through the speakers instead of the usual calming aveda soundtrack I hear in the covent garden flagship salon. The receptionists were obviously sharing a private joke and continued to giggle throughout my checking in process at one point she couldn't get through a sentence without laughing and someone behind the back wall was also joining in I felt like I was being laughed at. I then when through to the seating area was offered a coffee which I accepted, whoever was meant to be manning the coffee station wasn't there and instead of just making me a drink the girl who was serving me returned 5 minutes later with the coffee girl in toe and reprimanded the girl for not staying at the coffee station at all times. It was very uncomfortable for me and others in the waiting area. There are young assistants running around flapping and swearing, the hairdresser wanted me in and out as quickly as possible, I didn't feel special or welcome, I felt like I was getting in the way. The cut wasn't what I asked for I left with a simple trim which I paid through the nose for. All in all I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, the salon failed me at every turn. read more

Received the worst haircut ever!! I arrived to find the stylist I had booked with was running very late so they offered me someone else who was available at my correct time. Due to the fact I was on my lunch break I unfortunately had to go with the other stylist so I could get back to work on time. I agree that they to do what they choose to do with your hair and not what you would like them to do with your hair. I had a photograph with me and the stylist said oh brilliant it is just what you have now but with a bit more shape round the sides and back. I arrived at the salon with a long thick fringe and left with the worst short and thin fringe ever. It is really really awful and I can't do anything with it. Normally I would go back but they cant glue my fringe back on so there is no point. I will just have to wait until it grows back in. I would not recommend this salon to a friend. read more

Usually a great service although more expensive than many other salons. I was interested to read the first review because I too have ended up with a badly cut bob because my usual hairdresser was away. Perhaps the hairdresser was particularly busy/stressed that day, but she was far too bolshy for my liking and I was glad to get away. Will make sure I wait for my usual hairdresser if I go back. read more
