There's a large tank of lobsters to the right of the counter where you order. The staff are friendly and service is efficient; the order comes out really fast. Most recently, I got a Regular Lobster Roll with Butter and a Lobsta Bisque. The roll had the ideal balance of being crispy and buttery, while maintaining its structural integrity. The line was out the door, so me and my colleague decided to order online which said it would take 15 minutes, while the line moved fast our orders moved faster. lol I got the Buttered Large Lobster Roll, Lobster Bisque and a side of extra butter and mayo. The roll was soft but still had integrity, the lobster was tender juicy and steamed to perfection, the butter and mayo added an amazing creaminess. The bisque was smooth, warm and creamy. The portions on the large lobster roll were overwhelming in a good way! It had so much lobster meat I added a quarter to the bisque and filled it up. I had mixed feelings about this place. The lobster roll was pretty disappointing -- the "roll" wasn't really a roll at all, more like a piece of bread, and overall it just lacked flavor. The lobster mac and cheese wasn't much better in terms of lobster content -- there was barely any in it -- though the flavor itself was okay. I think overall James Hook is a pretty good value for the food, location, and overall experience! I wanted to bring my out-of-town family to get a classic New England lobster roll and chose here for a few reasons. First they had good sized rolls for a decent price compared to other restaurants. Second, they're in a nice location in Seaport AND had a little free parking lot in the back so it was convenient for us. Third, they had plenty of seating. We came around 11 to 11:20 am on a summer Saturday and it wasn't too busy yet, though by the time we left (a bit past noon?), the little parking lot was completely full and tables were definitely filling up too. The food itself I'd rate maybe a 3.5 out of 5. Most of us got hot lobster rolls, one got the cold one, and we also got clam chowder and potato salad. Overall they gave a lot of lobster in their rolls! But they were very simple, no seasoning really, and thus not super memorable in any way. Adding salt helped a lot though, however I'm of the opinion that I shouldn't be needing to season my food separately lol. My mom, who got the cold roll, did say it was actually better than the hot one, likely because the mayo had more flavor than plain butter. The clam chowder was on the thinner side, but tasted pretty good. Potato salad was pretty standard and good. Overall I just liked the vibe, with the charming lobster decor and seaside hut aesthetic. The food was solid value, there was a parking lot (though small), and we were able to walk around Seaport afterwards. A nice place to visit, especially as a tourist in Boston. The butter wasn't as warm as it should have been IMO. Some of it was already solidifying and it was a hot day. So I'm not sure how the butter is being stored as I did not order the food . The bread was a tad disappointing. It was way too much dough and a bit dry. I know it's just a vessel to hold the lobster meat but I didn't want to eat it at all. You can order inside or at the little food truck outside!! Staff is super friendly and helpful and the food comes out very quickly and is delicious!! We tried both the lobster roll hot with butter and cold with mayo! Both were delicious (and overflowing with lobster) although I do think I preferred the cold with mayo a bit more! We also got the lobster Mac and cheese which was super cheesy and delicious and had HUGE pieces of lobster in it!
