Robbie's - your typical footy loving, local, Leith boozer!…read more Now, I didn't think I'd really fit-in in a pub like this, with real Leith locals and footy fanatics, but on one of our Leith pub crawls - along came Robbie's, so I thought why not! It was a bit daunting at first, but you know it's not all that bad in there! It's a traditional pub with leather banquet seating, a great selection on draught and spirits, including a wheat beer on draught (my preferred liquid refreshment at the moment) a roaring open fire and the occasional dog! It's a bit rough around the edges but then that's what I expected. More recently I went there for a mates birthday drinks, there was a big group of us, at least 20 and I was surprised how well the staff coped with us. We managed to secured a long section of the pub and there was even cake (supplied by ourselves)! Sadly there's only one female toilet (which is the disabled toilet), I was told the female toilets are currently out of order and have been for a while, which on a busy Saturday night lead to cues outside the loo. I wouldn't rush back to Robbie's as I prefer the atmosphere of the neighbouring pub The Tourmalet which has a much better selection of wheat beers and has a more homely feel.

Should this not be sufficiently exciting then there is a dartboard on offer and on Friday or Saturday night there's a good chance there will be karaoke on offer. On these nights the standard of karaoke is really rather good and whilst it will be busy enough to create an atmosphere of sufficient calibre, you will not have to wait forever and a day to get a song in. The drink prices are pretty standard for the area, but if you check out the chalkboard out front either on entry or on your travels there you'll find that on some days the prices are cut for specific drinks - this board is well worth paying attention to if you're planning a visit.

Situated in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh, the International Bar is just a short walk from the city centre and is really close to the Meadows too so it is a convenient place to reach. This is a fairly traditional pub, with a dart board, and there is a good atmosphere in here as the staff are always cheerful and inviting and there is a jukebox which always plays out music playing. The drinks in the International Bar are pretty cheap and they serve a wide range of different beers and ales. The house red wine here is tasty and doesn't taste like vinegar which some you can find in other bars. The International Bar frequently has speical offers available which are worth while, especially as there is no student discount on offer. The food is also worth a try as they serve the standard pub meals such as fish and chips, burgers and baked potatoes, which are particularly tasty - really well cooked with fluffy potato in the centre and a crispy skin - yum! The International Bar does show A LOT of football matches, so perhaps it isn't one for the non-football fans on a football night as it can get pretty rowdy in here. I wasn't really too optimistic about the pub, thinking it was going to be full of old men and the traditional pub decor when we walked in only helped fuel this idea. but on closer inspection, there seemed to be a good range of people within the pub and there was a good friendly atmosphere there. There was a good range of drinks on offer in there with a range of ales and spirits and the prices weren't too bad either. I wouldn't particularly recommend the pub to students, but if you live locally, it definitely seems a nice friendly place to come and catch up over a reasonably priced drink.

A workers pub for many, being filled with a mix-mash of market researchers from the nearby Ipsos Mori to the dock workers at the nearby Leith shore, it is worthy of a trek off the beaten Leith track. A fantastic selection of wheat beers and European ales which make Pivo's selection of far flung, 'point instead of pronouncing' beers look distinctly Fischer Price in comparison. The highlight would be the frequent rotation of one of the beer pumps for hefty (5%+) lager poured to perfection which would take a Ryanair flight to find anywhere else, alongside others such as cult Tennants to cloudy Addlestones cider. Whilst a fantastically varied selection of malts et al rest on the shelves, reasonably priced normal bar fair nestles in the hidden fridge in one corner ensuring the atmosphere can still be enjoyed by those who may have questioned initially walking beyond Wetherspoon's 'Foot Of The Walk'. The pub is ran the way you would love every pub to be ran, encapsulated in a Thursday night scenario recently. A handful of us, after a visit to the nearby Mongolian buffet restaurant Khublai Khan's, were the only remaining patrons after last orders had been rang at 12:45. This was even after the pub barely reaching a dozen in capacity for most of our visit, but we weren't hurried to the door at all but simply politely informed that kick out would be 1:20, by which time we had enjoyed our drinks and said our goodbye. No hussle and bussle from the bar staff, no downing of half a pint of fantastic German Oktoberfest beer, no regrets about not making a final visit to the gents. In addition, an all year open beer garden may be exposed to the unsheltered shore elements adds to the quirks which include a chalkboard wall above the gents urinals, a laptop 'jukebox' and two inquisitive fish-tanks sparking the watery decoration theme. A hidden gem that will probably stay that way. And is all the better for it.

Everyone is united by the quirky nature of the pub and the fantastic range of mainly German and Belgian beers on offer, many on tap. If you are coming from Portobello, make sure any ladies with you know what to wear as a short skirt and long jacket is not advisable. This place sits on the edge of the Red Light district on Seafield Rd which makes for some interesting watching out the windows. In the many times we've walked along we have had more bother from the police kerb crawling myself and my girlfriend wondering why we were walking along at night and never had any hassle from the local prostitutes or pimps. Lots of board games to play too make for an excellent evening

We showed up for a few drinks and really enjoyed the great live music by Dennis Kennedy DelBhoy. He does a great job entertaining the crowds and gets us involved.
