We came here for a festival on the invitation of family members. Rather than say bad things, maybe recommendations are more appropriate? First, invest in PEST control. Then, maybe, train your employees to CLEAN the place, from top to bottom-but definitely include the glass cases! Then possibly give them a lesson on Southern graces? Kindness and manners are free. From what we witnessed, none of these things were being actively addressed, so we turned on our heels and walked out the door. I can't say anything negative about this place. Everything I have purchased there has been delicious. I bought an Ambrosia cake a couple of years ago from this shop, and it was one of the bast cakes I've ever eaten. The shop is small, but they still have good variety to choose from. I have lived all over the US and always make it a point when I stop in Brookhaven to visit my mother's grave to go by Janie's to get their AMAZING sugar cookies with vanilla icing. The perfect blend of flour, butter and milk always decorated in seasonal designs like four leaf clovers, easter bunnies, turkeys and christmas trees. I definitely have my pros, and cons starting with my wedding cake which was a major con. First off: This is where my grandmother decided to get my wedding cake. I had a small family ceremony so the cake was a surprise so I had no say so in it, but the appearance was quite boring, and atrocious honestly. Icing wasn't even, it looked choppy, the few blue "flowers" on it looked like icing thrown on it, and no time spent on it. It looked like a 5 year old made it. I didn't even post pictures of my cake to any sites cause it was just.. bad. Now the taste of the cake... Oh my goodness.. and NOT in a good way. Actually, I couldn't even taste it; it was so unbelievably sweet... I mean.. I got a huge burst of lemon flavor, but that's typical of this place having lemon in everything. But seriously.. Words can't describe how sweet it was. Let's just put it this way.. The first bite my husband fed me was my only bite I ever had of that cake. I'm not exaggerating when I say this, but it was so sweet, every tooth in my mouth went into an unbelievably surge amount of pain, and locked my jaw up, where I had to immediately go spit the piece out, and rinse my mouth out thoroughly. So, I never got any traditional feeding cake pictures. I thought maybe my teeth were just sensitive, but when my husband got his bite he chewed up a little, but spit the rest out cause it was so sweet. Then when my family all got a slice nobody took more than a bite or two as well, including my dad having pain searing through his teeth too from the sweetness. All in all we threw out an entire cake. Didn't even bother saving any from seeing nobody even touched their pieces. So money wasted for maybe all together an entire slice eaten between everybody at the reception out of the entire cake. Moving on tho! It's a cute little shop. Makes you feel like you're going back in time. They have an array of options. In the shop itself.. Plenty of different donuts, and pastries! I'm not the BIGGEST fan of them however. The donuts seem more cake like than donut, and lemon seems to be apart of every recipe, cause everything I've gotten has just tasted like pure lemon, just like my wedding cake. I don't mind lemon of course, but if I get a chocolate donut I don't want a kick of lemon there too. Don't expect Krispy Kreme quality from appearance, and taste wise, but it's fun to walk into the old timey era themed shop. Downside inside shop wise as well which is a common theme in Brookhaven was the workers. I'm sure it's their family's place, so they don't see it as a "job job" but when I bring my husband in for the first time whose from a huge city in Florida, and he walks in, and the girl just stares at him looking irritated for not making a decision within 30 seconds, and being the only people in there... it's pretty embarrassing for me bragging about this "cute little pastry shop." Just the people that work there don't fit the vibe of the place! Seem too bothered with customers. Also.. it does seem/feel dirty. I'm not saying it's not clean, but it just feels well.. Dirty. I can't explain it. It has a dark musky feel to it, and well.. seems dirty. Lol. The case will have a ton of fingerprints where it doesn't look wiped off in years, and counters look dusty, and stained. So for food wise it's pretty much a no-go for me. I haven't found anything I like personally there. Too each their own but I find the atmosphere, and the charm of it better than their actual items sold. read more

I went by this morning because I had heard about "Janies". I went in to see if they had breakfast items. They had chicken biscuits. I purchased a chicken biscuit and a fruit bowl. The chicken biscuit was absolutely nasty. It was hard, dry and the chicken tasted like grease. It's clear that they DO NOT filter not replace the frying oil on a regular basis. I had to throw it away. The fruit was awful. The bowl was filled 3/4 with water. This is a problem, because the water gets into the fruit and the juices extrude from each fruit and are infused with others. The pineapple tasted like grapes and cantaloupe. The cantaloupe tasted like pineapple and honeydew. I had to throw it away. AWFUL place. The coffee was weak like tea and was not pleasant to the taste. I called to let them know, I spoke with Leigh. There was no apology nor an option for refund. I will never go back again. It was my first and last time. read more

Janie's Pastry is a cute little bakery set in a small strip of local businesses. When you first walk upon the small shop, it looks like you've been time warped into the 1950's. The decor is reminiscent of a burger shop where you could get a good burger and malt milkshake. But instead of burgers the glass under the counters are lined with cupcakes, cookies and homemade donuts. There are small tables where you can sit, drink a good cup of coffee and eat a delicious treat. In the corner is a counter with stools to sit and watch the train come by as you snack. Indeed the inside of the shop is great and quirky. However, the only complaint I have is the owners and workers are not very friendly. They seem to not want to even be there. They never smile, they never say "hello, welcome to Janie's" instead they stare and seem to hope you hurry with your order so they can finish the day. It really brings the energy of the shop down. However, that being said. They have the best cookies and donuts in town. read more
