We followed the directions to the theater according to the website, which of course led us to the original theater, and not the annex. On the website we then found a small blurb about the location being at the Washington Square Mall. After finding the mall, we still could not find the annex, and the theater's website provided no number to call to talk to anyone. We drove around for an hour, and extremely frustrated, missed the show. I had purchased the tickets ahead of time. The lady on the phone could have informed us of the theater's location, or the website could have given clear directions to those of us unfamiliar with the area but wanting to support the theater. Which we still did--the box office manager refused to refund our tickets even after my polite call and e-mail. If we ever make it back to Evansville, we will certainly not be going here.

Many of the plays they put on here are great, but I take issue with their smoking during…read moreproductions without warning or notice to audience members. It has happened three times now that my husband and I have had to leave productions due to smoke. There are no warnings about it on their webpage, nor their flyers, nor does anyone tell you about it when you call for tickets. Quite to the contrary: their programs explicitly say that smoking is not allowed in any building on the UE campus. They are willing to let people pay for tickets, take time out of their night, pay for babysitters, and turn down alternative plans only to have to leave a production 20 minutes into it with a headache. Even though we left the play once it was apparent there would be smoking all the way through, we were told there would be no refunds or credits available. I've been in many theaters all over the US- New York, San Francisco, Houston, Nashville - and not a single one has had smoking on stage. If they can figure out how to keep the dramatic effect of the play without the actual smoke, why can't Evansville? At the very least, the smoking should be advertised so that people can be in choice about whether to spend the time and money. As it stands, it seems clear that the policies are set up to hide this fact until they already have their money in hand. My husband and I have season tickets this year and will not be renewing them until this policy changes. Buyer beware - you may be walking into a smokey theater without warning if you see a play here.

It was a night of everything from Arpeggio to Vibrato at the philharmonic as all things Irish were…read morecelebrated. The theme was St. Patrick so all the music was geared to the sounds from the Emerald Isle. They opened with "The Fair Day" from An Irish Symphony, then moved into four songs from Opus 35, John Williams' Suite from Far and Away, "The Irish Washerwoman" from Irish Suite, then ended the first half with a Camille Saint-Saens' piece, Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso with a special guest, violinist Nathan Meltzer. The 17-year-old American violinist is the youngest winner to ever win the Windsor Festival String Competition. It was really an amazing opportunity to hear him play. Following intermission, the philharmonic played Four Scottish Dances from Opus 59, the theme from Titanic, Carmen Fantasy - again accompanied by Meltzer, then ended with music from The Lord of the Dance and Irish Tune from Country Derry. The last two sets were extra special since The McTeggart Irish Dancers, all the way from my home, Cork, Ireland, accompanied the music with their traditional Irish dancing. It was the second time I have been to the Victory Theater, but my first for the philharmonic. While it was an amazing way to celebrate St. Patrick's, it wasn't cheap; a ticket was right at $80, plus $5 for parking. I was in the balcony and had a decent view; unfortunately, the seats are very close together so you cannot comfortably cross your legs. I could have used a little more leg room since I am on the tall side. I tried my best not to constantly bump the person's seat in front of me, but I had to put in effort not to do so. They have done a nice job restoring the historic 1921 building as part of the ongoing overhaul of the downtown area. The rich and traditional yesteryear decor is the perfect backdrop for the talented orchestra. According to the program, Carina Burana is slated for April. I may have to return, but that only leaves me about four weeks to brush up on my Latin and 13th-century Medieval poetry. I may need a little more time.

We traveled to Evansville from the Louisville metro area to see comedians Brian Regan and Kermit…read moreApio at the Victory Theater on a Sunday night. Quick drive down I-64 and found plenty of street parking and parking lots in the general vicinity of the venue. We forgot that Evansville locale is on CST, which is an hour behind our EST zone. We visited a nearby bar/restaurant for a bit and then entered the theater as soon as doors opened. Multiple security checkpoints and scanning of electronic tickets and then we were in a beautiful lobby. Visit to the restroom, which was well maintained and clean, and then we walked to the theater. Several ushers assisted us in locating our seats, which were plush and comfortable in a tiered configuration. The theater is gorgeous, appears opulent with the myriad of gold fixtures and gilded decor, and seems to be a great example of a retro time period from the early 1920's to 1930's. Audio and visuals were excellent during the show. Performers were fantastic in this size of venue, just right. We enjoyed the show and would be happy to return again! :)
