My husband and I were able to try 3 wines each for 15€/tasting. They make roughly 12,000 cases of wine a year and sell mostly to local restaurants. What is not sold you are able to try at the winery itself. Due to this, we were slightly disappointed on this visit as we visit this winery every time we visit the island. We were disappointed because we were limited on which bottles to try and they had sold out on some wines that they had had before.

We found this place online by their website and reached out to them for a visit. Mario, who…read morebasically runs a one-man shop at this vineyard, e-mailed us back and invited us for a tour. We visited in late November, so there were no grapes still left on the vines, but Mario went into great detail about the history of the location and the land, the types of grapes they used, how 95% of vines in the world are actually grown from a graft with American root stock, etc. It was my first vineyard tour so it was really interesting to learn about the process. After a tour of the outside, he took us inside to show us where the wine was made. It is small--he said between 12,000 and 15,000 bottles are made annually--and it was really interesting to see the different equipment used. There was no wine to taste, but he did have a few bottles left for sale. They ranged from €6.50 for the Sauvignon blanc to €10.00 for the Chardonnay, and we picked up one of each plus a bottle of Merlot-Aragonês and another bottle of red. The only bottle we didn't buy was the Rose. I did see some of this wine in local stores and in the duty free section at the airport, but otherwise it isn't sold outside of the Azores. If you do get in touch with Mario and decide to visit, be forewarned that it is a bit tough to find. The address (Quinta da Jardinete Rua dos Montes Nª Srª do Carmo 23 9545-243 Fenais da Luz) is correct, but the location on Google maps is a bit off (I put in a request on December 6, 2015 to change it) and the building is very nondescript. There are high stone walls all around the property so you can't actually see any of the vines (which according to Mario is instrumental in creating the micro-climate for the wines), and there isn't a sign indicating a winery, but believe me, it's there I highly recommend reaching out to Mario and having a visit if you have time!

Love trees? This incredible botanical garden is worth a visit!…read more We arrived in Ponta Delgada on a cruise ship on a Sunday morning and nothing was open in the city AT ALL. We spied this botanical garden on the map and wandered up to it - it's not a far walk from the port but it's up a slope. Entrance cost 5 EUR each. We paid a super friendly dude in a little booth near the entrance and he gave us a pamphlet that indicated all of the routes to follow and the major trees to look out for. Jose Do Canto was apparently a wealthy intellectual in the Azores who loved botany and collected these trees from all around the world - Australia, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Africa, North and South America etc... These trees have been growing since his time - the 1850s!! - and they're incredible specimens to see! A super worthy way to spend a quiet Sunday morning in Ponta Delgada. (I imagine it must be even more incredible during spring/summer when things are blooming. (TIP: There are bathrooms are at the far end of the park.)

A super deal for only 3 euro, you are able to take a tour inside Fort S. Bras. There are lot of…read moreitems to look at and you get wonderful views from the battlements. There are also a lot of great little corridors and rooms to explore from this fort's long history. The Azores has a long history of military presence on San Miguel. The fort itself is hundreds of years old, and you are able to freely walk around pretty much everywhere once you get your pass. There are plenty of interesting objects and displays, such as military regalia, personnel weapons, cannons, etc. What I really liked about this museum though is that the tour is unguided and you can move about at your own pace. As this is not America, there are not keep off signs everywhere, you are expected to know and respect the boundaries of what is permissible. Don't go riding every 40mm gun you see. There are literally no personnel up on the battlements, so if you go hanging off them and plunge to your death it's your own fault. That being said, you can get some really great pictures of the entire city as well as the bay from this area. There are also some pretty large shore guns from WWII that are still stationed up there, which you can stand next to, and really get a sense of the scope of them. I took a few minutes to just perch against the perimeter wall and take in this beautiful town. I was here in September and the museum is well attended, but not busy. You can also go through a number of the old tunnels and rooms underneath the fort. There is one area in particular that is pretty creepy (but also pretty fun!) to move through. There are some signs, but you can get turned around pretty easily in here, so make mental notes of your location as you go. Plenty to do and see down here and I won't ruin all the details. Overall, highly recommended and one of the best parts of my trip.

They also serve pineapple liqueur, pineapple cake, pineapple sangria and pineapple pastries. The pineapple liqueur is also for sale. Everything was delicious as we tried a little bit of everything!
