Years ago the City of Valencia diverted the Turia river to make way for a city long park loaded with soccer fields,bike paths, work out facilities, cafes, and much much more. If you're fortunate to make it to Valencia, I think one of the best things to do is take a long, leisurely walk through this unusual urban park. Snaking through the middle of the city for over 5-1/2 miles, it's the former riverbed of the Turia River. A tragic flood in 1957 forced the city to reroute the river, and while Franco wanted to build an autobahn, the local populace insisted it be turned into a green oasis. Because we had only a couple of days in Valencia, Jamie W and I focused mostly on the continuous walking path. We didn't have time to stop at destinations along the way like the various museums and historic bridges. Starting at the City of Arts and Sciences on the southern end, we made our way back toward the center of town. Because of its submerged level, the park is well insulated from traffic noises. There are many places to take a rest and enjoy the orange trees (Photo 5) or watch Valencians jog, bike, and frolic, including the Gulliver playground where groups shared the same slide on one of his sleeves (Video). When Im in town i generally stay by the Calatrava complex. After taking a stroll through the architecture, I make my way through the Turia river bed gardens. If I had a day to spend Id try and walk the whole thing out to the outskirts of the western parts of the city. It is quite huge. It's interesting that this city planning and beautiful space came out of the tragedy of the city flooding and the new river, which is almost completely barren on the outside of the city is down trodden. Anyways, there is way more to explore than meets the eye, and a bonus is on hot days, it's usually more temperate in the gardens below read more

This park is one of the best things in Valencia. It is really long, easy to access, full of playgrounds, sport fields, places to hangout and picnic, skate parks, ping pong tables, paths for bicycle, running and walking, and more. In some parts of the park (near the sport fields), there are also cafes. The atmosphere is really nice and relaxing. The best time to visit is of course during summer, but it is also nice to visit all year long because it is not that cold in Valencia anyway. However there are many more people during summer, for example it gets more difficult to ride a bike during that time. The distance of the park spreads from the City of Art and Science until Bio Park on the other end. I love riding my bike along the bicycle path. I usually access the park from the side that is near Bio Parc and ride until Alameda. It is also safer to go by this way than through the traffic. Also, there are people who skate and roller blade. The only negative thing about this park is that there are many dog poops on the grass where is suppose dot be for people to chill out. Yo have to be careful where to lay on the grass or to find a place for picnic. During the night, it seems safe enough to pass through the park. I sometimes walk back from my work through the park around 9:30 pm and there were still a number of people. One highlight is the Gulliver Park situated within this park. it's got many slides for children. Very fun to visit! I highly recommend this place! read more

This beautiful green space and bike path once had a river ran through it, and following severe flooding in 1957 it changed the city's landscape forever, becoming what is now 9 kms of park snaking through the heart of the city! Fantastic way to discover the Valencia from the old city to the City of Arts & Science or vice versa, with gardens and funky architecture along the way. Wonderful example of how changes can bring more green space and alternate use and pedestrian and cyclist transportation to a city! read more

A pretty nice park, situated in the "Rio" of Valencia, right next to the Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias. There are plenty of paved walking, running and biking trails, something like 10 km (6 miles) or more in total. There are these cool, ornate water stations every so often, and plenty of benches. You can also rent bikes along the trail or from one of the nearby Valenisi stations, if you have an account. Restaurants line the trail every few kilometers, so you can get something to eat and drink during your stroll. A useful feature is the workout area they have, just below the rotunda of Las Baleares, with the funny looking statue. The area has chin-up bars, push-up bars, leg-lift platforms, dip bars, etc. plus a water fountain. A great way to get a workout in with your run or bike. Along with the great view offered by the CAC buildings, it makes for a pretty enjoyable park. read more

Valencia's "Belt Line" that serves as a great park for runners, bikers, and dogs! There are water fountains and mini-workout stations if you want a water break or mini-ab/arm workout session. The elevation of the trail and track was pretty consistent and along the trail, you can spot some of the towers of Valencia. The path also leads to local fairs/ mini-amusement park (similar to a state fair) that adds a festive note to your walk/run! Note: the trail is well lighted at night! read more
