So I ordered a flavored iced latte. They have no sugar-free options but fine. A lot of places don't. They also have nothing but whole milk, almond milk or oat milk. I'm not 5 yrs old so I don't need/drink whole milk. I opted for almond milk and they charged $1.50 extra!!! I'm not kidding. My drink was $7.50 and it was this teeny tiny little cup, about 6 ounces. They didn't fill it all the way up but I didn't even bother to say anything because the cashier was already blatantly annoyed with me. She got a bit angry when I asked why they didn't have a bigger option, because the drink would be gone in about 5 minutes. I guess it's a good thing though since I'm sure they would've charged about $10 for a normal sized iced latte. I miss the old Java Surf Cafe. It was the first time being in there since the pandemic and it wasn't the same. They've switched to more of a coffee shop feel instead of cafe. There is less seating inside. The couch and the merchandise makes it feel really tight inside. I miss the big coffee mugs. Everything is now on or in paper products. I was excited to take my husband there and it was a let down. They were extremely busy with take outs. It took us an hour to get our sandwiches. We ordered the same thing, but mine was without cheese - but yet he got peppers and I got bacon. Coffee was still good. Atmosphere wasn't as nice as it used to be. read more

I've always loved the food and coffee here, but they have some really weird policies. Went by the other day to eat inside and found that the front entrance is barricaded off and you have to order outside for everything. Once you have waited around outside to place your order (for 10 minutes in the rain in my case), then you are allowed to walk inside and sit down. How crazy is that?!!! Loved coming here before going out to the beach. The coffee is so smooth, I'd always get the s'mores latte and one of the Funky Monkey wraps! It has peanut butter, bananas and apples on it. The peanut butter is perfectly melted and the fruit on it tastes so good! Parking is the only thing that's not so great but if you're here in off season, you'll have no problem. All the employees are so nice and it's definitely an enjoyable experience every time. Very nice place to just sit, relax and sip a cup of coffee. read more

Went here to meet the homie yungJAX and his soon bride to be Nate. The atmosphere at Java surf was a chill, open, surf vibe that welcomes you in with its polite staff and delicious food. By the recommendation of yungJAX I got the bottomless coffee, and damn, his recommendations never disappoint. I don't know why I ever doubt you yungJAX. I had the Hawaiian melt but added bacon and this is where I return the favor!...yungJAX, I recommend the Hawaiian melt with bacon... my wife had the bottomless ice coffee with a light house melt (pictured). At the end of our meals, our plates were clean, and the staff gave us Togo cups for our coffees. We'll be back, and Java surf!!! I will be buying a mug. Unbelievable, I never feel compelled to leave a review... but the morning of July 4th really irritated me.... I went to Java Surf and ordered breakfast and wanted a few menu changes, I asked the cashier if someone could please clean off the table (dirty from previous customers) I was pointed to the napkins.... Just pointed to the napkins.... After paying $40 plus 20% tip... I really wanted my table sanitized not just wiped off with a napkin. My boyfriend is recovering from a lung transplant from Covid and has low immunity so it's important to have cleanliness. I cleaned the table the best I could. I still tried to keep an upbeat attitude. I sat down and realized I neglected to asked for gluten free toast and asked to server to switch it out. She checked with the cook and was told NO that it was already made. I was also told if I wanted something different I had to go back to the cashier and re-order it. I told her that I would just eat it without a piece of toast. 20 minutes later still NO food so I asked to speak to the manager, I told her if my meal was made and ready 20 minutes ago there's a problem if it still wasn't delivered. I was told they were very busy and our meals were NOT yet made. I ask if I could switch out the slice of bread for gluten free, I was told there was an up charge... I explained if there was an up charge for the gluten-free bread and that was not a problem that I would pay the difference. The manager rings up the up charge for the piece of gluten-free toast and tells me that it is $6.59. The retail price for a bag of Udi's gluten-free bread at a grocery store is normally around $5.50-$6.00 price, and the price of a loaf from a restaurant wholesaler is $4.00. so why would I be paying $6.59 to switch out one slice of toast??? Absolutely ridiculous. So I told the manager to keep the toast because I am gluten free. Not 10 minutes later my meal was delivered a turkey sausage and tomato scramble with a piece of multigrain toast laying smack on top of my scramble which totally contaminates my food. So I toss out the toast and in order to eat this I have to go home immediately afterwards and take medication so I don't end up being very ill. The turkey sausage and tomato scramble and the spinach scramble were both awesome. The coffee beverages were outstanding as well. (even though the cashier wouldn't guarantee me that my drinks would be made properly) The service was basically awful with the exception of the server... she was as sweet as could be and it was definitely not her fault that the cashier was pitiful and the manager tried to charge me for a whole loaf of bread instead of a slice of toast. The place could be amazing... "customer service people" I could have had an amazing experience if they would have cleaned of my table, taken my coffee order without acting like almond milk was a big deal, and switching out my toast without trying to charge me for a loaf of bread, then contaminating my meal... read more

My boyfriend and I normally visit the Java Surf at hilltop but decided to go to the oceanfront restaurant this time, but will not be back to this location. The food/coffee is always good but the service was very bad. We finished our food then finally received our coffees about 20 minutes after eating, never got checked on, food orders were incorrect, waited on our check for about 30 minutes before finally having to get up and ask for it. With that being said, it really didn't seem to be a busy afternoon for them either. Still a fan of Java Surf but I think this location needs a little more help. Definitely found my new favorite breakfast spot at the beach! My friend and I walked up with two huge dogs and they were so accommodating! The manager and waitress cleared off the deck right away so the dogs had somewhere to lay, brought them water bowls and treats and opened the umbrella so it wasn't too hot. Not only was the customer service amazing but the coffee and breakfast was delicious! The menu is very different from your average breakfast spot and there's something for everyone. Unfortunately the guitar players groupies were taking up the entire bar and two tables in front of her, which I thought was pretty much a waste of space and I felt bad for the waiters that had to sit there watch prime tables be used up without any tips, but that's another story. But honestly, that's just poor form. Back to point out, Java Surf makes good food and good coffee and the prices are reasonable. Nice quiet and most importantly, not cheesy coffee shop off the beach. It's about 1/4 - 1/2 mile from the boardwalk but great coffee and espresso based drinks. They have a full breakfast and lunch menu, which was important for us since we needed food and more than just pastries. Being able to sit outside on the fun patio was a definite plus, since we had our medium sized dog with us. read more

Yes I am a regular, but not really a fan. That does not mean that the place is bad mind you, but not my cup of joe. To start this is one of the places that I have gone to in search of hipster coffee with my daughter. Coffee is good, service the times I have been there has been ok, and food is fine. Therefore the three stars. It is to me ok, nothing special or like roast riders, workers who go out of their way to make you feel welcome and that is my beef, nothing overt but I have not felt welcome here. After reading the many enthusiastic reviews of their old location, and running into a local who said their coffee was 'life-changing', I was looking forward to checking out this place on a recent trip to Virginia Beach to visit a friend. I can't help but feel that either the place has drastically changed since moving to their new location, or everyone who was raving about this restaurant has never experienced good coffee or amazing food. Honestly, this place wasn't terrible. But it wasn't great, food or service wise. And when I'm back in the area for a visit, I don't think I'll be stopping here. A few nuggets from our visit: -Our waitress didn't know the difference between the coffee drinks, and as they only offered about 5, she should have either known the difference between them, or offered to ask the barista right behind her. -When asked if they had ketchup, the waitress serving the table directly beside ours said, (direct quote), "We don't serve anything fried. So we have no need for ketchup here." Pretentious and condescending much? The table clearly was taken aback by her answer. Either say, "Sorry, we don't. But we do have (insert other condiment here)." Also, your food isn't great enough to warrant ruling out condiments, and right after she said this, someone came out of the kitchen with a sandwich and plate of chips (last time I checked, chips were fried). -For some reason it took a very long time to get our machiattos. Granted, it was sort of busy, but every time I looked over at the espresso machine no one was over there, and they had tons of staff. The coffee ended up coming with our food. I really hope this wasn't on purpose, as I would hope that a breakfast/coffee place would know that generally people like to get their coffee right away to enjoy before the food arrives. -We were still finishing our meal when our waitress started taking away our plates, the second time I had to grab my plate to keep her from leaving with it with food still on it. Like I said, it was kind of busy but not so busy that there was a line and people were waiting for our table. I would say there were at least 5-7 other open tables, and we were only a two-seater anyway. She also took away my plate from under where I was writing my check - not a huge deal normally but after everything it just continued to show how clearly inexperienced the waitstaff is here. -Oh yeah, and the coffee certainly wasn't 'life-changing', in fact, it was pretty underwhelming and watery. The food was equally 'meh.' We ended up heading to Three Ships down the block, which had much nicer and friendlier staff, way better coffee, great ambiance, and a pop-up waffle brunch special. Anyone looking for a weekend brunch - do yourself a favor and hit up Three Ships, unless you're ok with a mediocre and rushed experience at Java Surf. Also, the outdoor seating is in the parking lot. read more

My favorite place to go for a relaxing atmosphere to study. Their coffee is the best in VB hands down... The workers are beautiful and friendly. This is my second home, I come here at least 4 times a week . Popped in for a late lunch and had a satisfying, tasty meal. I have a gluten and dairy allergy, so I'm always a little nervous eating out--especially at quick lunch places. Thankfully, our server was very confident and knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients that went into each dish. The chicken salad sandwich with gluten free bread was delicious! The bread itself was a good brand (not the overly dry, tough GF breads some restaurants have) and was soft, moist, but didn't crumble at all. I also had a peanut butter, coffee, and banana smoothie that was good as well. My only complaint for the smoothie is that it was rather expensive for the size. $8 for what I would consider a small. Gluten and dairy free substitutes and additions are extra--which doesn't both me but is good to know. Overall, we had a good time at a cute, tasty, and convenient little lunch spot! Next time I'd skip the smoothie, but certainly not the sandwich. read more
