Strolling in charming, yet largely deserted downtown on a Saturday evening on Winter break, seeing that Javalina was open at 5:45 PM felt like a mirage. The place was not only open, but exuded style and character. We are quite Chai snobs, but it was delicious. We chillaxed while waiting for check in time at our Airbnb. Lots of interesting art and vintage artifacts, and a quiet and friendly atmosphere. We'll try the coffee on our next visit, seeing the care given to the chai, I am sure the espresso drinks are just as excellent. read more

Currently my fave for daily brew in SC. Would be five stars in local terms, but I'm comparing it to places all over the country, often in much bigger towns. The coffee is top notch. The service is a little stressed out and overworked sometimes, but always pleasant and efficient and humane. The prices are just to the right side of affordable, and if you bring your cup back for a refill then you get a stellar bargain. The atmosphere is "your cool but not rich neighbor's living room", and too often that neighbor has a house full of teenagers overstaying their welcomes ... but if you want the opposite of that ... a certain, um, bohemian and geriatric calm and rheumatic grace, head down the block to Tranquil Buzz. Prices here are so incredibly High. I can get an Americano cheaper in Tucson or anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. Say a 16 oz iced Americano is usually 3.50 in Portland, 3 bucks or even 2.50 in Tucson. Here it's $4.25? Crazy price. The decor is fine. A bit cluttered. I don't drink sugary diabetic coma inducing coffee drinks so I can't judge on that. Outdoor patio is nice but again a bit cluttered. Last time I was there the smell from the restroom permeated the whole building. It wasn't like poop. More like wet dog. And their Wi-Fi is super slow. I love Javalina. My only regret is that I don't have enough time to hang out here more often. It's the quintessential small town coffee house where everyone is welcome and you can get everything from a down to earth drip coffee to a chi-chi espresso drink with a wink and a smile. Javalina is a place for stories. One morning when I was there, a guy shuffled in wearing a bathrobe and slippers carrying his own cup which he had filled I assume at the counter before leaving as mysteriously as he came. On another day, a gentleman walked in with his dog, and while he was ordering, the dog promptly jumped up on the couch next to me and curled up in what I can only assume is his Sheldonian spot. It was wonderful. I don't have these experiences at the Starbucks in Boca Raton, Florida, I assure you. Sometimes when the sunlight makes it hard to see in, a tourist couple will peer through the windows, as if afraid to venture inside, and move along down the sidewalk. Fine by me. I'm happy to sit inside listening to the pleasant banter of those unafraid to walk through unfamiliar, or too familiar, doors. read more

We loved the coffee shop!! My oat milk latte was delish and my partner ordered the matcha latte. The outdoor deck was quirky and fun (plants just need to Be cared for a little more and a little cleaning is needed). Overall a cute place to visit! This is a coffee house with the furniture left over from 50 yard sales. The art and posters from those same places with hip local art blended. People on laptops with coffee camping. Hate to give a poor review of a small town business, yet today, one of the workers brought her kids in and there has been non-stop screaming, crying, and banging on the piano. Yesterday, was a little better, but people were making phone calls on speakerphone, so trying to think or relax here is a bit of a challenge. I was told that there are more quiet places in town by one of the nice customers who noticed my difficulty in concentrating. If it was not raining, I'd likely would have gone out to the nice patio vs. leaving. read more

Been living in the area for just under a year and Javalina is my default go-to coffee place. They also have the best schedule in my opinion (open at 6am and close at 7pm). Most coffee places in town close around 5, when I get out of work and am looking for that extra pick-me-up. The coffee is a bit higher priced than most places, but you're really paying for the ambiance. It's a great place that has a great feel, it's ideal if you hit this place up early in the morning and sit down to soak in the environment, the people, and enjoy the great coffee. Places that are unique are too cool. Coffee was great, super tasty pastry. Games for kids, indoor and outdoor seating. In the downtown area and easy to walk to.
