The pub has a very basic outside seating area, which is never all that enjoyable. The pub sells the standard draft beers such as Fosters, John Smiths, Boddingtons and Strong Bow. It has an array of spirits, wines and bottled beers available all usually at a decent price. The pub is often erratic with its opening hours and days at the minute due to financial difficulties. I do hope this one doesn't go, it really would be a great shame for the local area and community.

On the down side and due to the prices, this place can get busy and there is a good number of the people who've clearly had a pint or two too many. From the few times I visited here, it seems there was a group of seniors which were getting themselves pickled and if they were to die that very night they probably would not need embalming. I also didn't find the staff to be very friendly. They were not mean, but not overly sociable either. In the end, if you are with a group of people and in the neighborhood, then this is the place to come for a round or two, and then move onto your your next location.

The draft beer has changed a bit (used to be Tetleys - from the Leeds brewery I believe). back in the '70s and through the 90s I think. Then they had their "own brand bitter" for a few years. (I believe made for them by Tetleys). Now the beer is Timothy Taylor. All the beer has always been excellent. I hope they will always serve a good hand-pulled pint. And I hope to keep going there every year for a few more years!!

For entertainment, there is a pool table and quiz machines available, a Monday evening Happy Hour which drops the already low prices to circa £2 a pint (depending on what your tipple of choice is), plenty of big screen T.V.s if you fancy watching the football, and they are no strangers to having live music from some of Sheffield's local talent. I was last in on Friday night, and it was super quiet, which was a shame as usually there is a great weekend atmosphere in The Howard. However, I got chatting to the manager whilst waiting for a friend, and he informed me that unfortunately their refurbishment has been pushed back, so lots of the regular faces weren't aware they're still open! I love coming here for a quiet pint, either on my own while waiting for a train, as a pre-club watering hole, or meeting people for a catch-up. The staff are friendly and chatty, and the location of the pub makes it a great little spot to visit. I highly recommend it!

I had a pint (Punk IPA, quite good as usual) and their slow-cooked pulled pork and beans nachos there for lunch (£ 6.95). The food was certainly well-prepared and quite tasty (the Pulled pork was moist and aromatic), even if, again, the presentation is squarely aimed at young folk (that means it's lacking). In short, good place for a well-maintained beer (service was 100% friendly, 50% competent) and a quick bite. Not quite comfy or atmospheric enough to linger.
