I came here with a couple of friends to rent some inline skates. It's $18 for the whole day and $6 an hour. You need to give them at least one person's ID from your group as well as one person's contact information on the form. We rented roller blades for $6 for one hour. Been here a couple times now over the last few years to rent inline and roller skates (this is apparently one of the few places in Venice that currently has roller skates available for rental). At least one of the guys that's helped me was there both times I've been. Everyone's been courteous and attentive. My group probably game them grief while we figured out sizing but they were polite despite needing to switch out our skate sizes/choice. It's located right past the Venice sign, which is smack dab in the middle of more... touristy establishments. I'm hesitant to visit these places because I've been burned by touristy reviews before - like, what if Jay's just has high ratings because it's the first shop that tourists find when visiting Venice? Thankfully I've found that's not the case at all. While I can't say that Jay's has a nice building, or gleaming bikes and skates for rental -- and what Venice rental place does? -- Jay's does take care of their equipment and aren't out to nickel and dime you. This place is quick, simple and easy. The guys at the shop are really nice and they get you out with your boards pretty quickly. I recommend making sure the board is waxed but other than that this place is easy to grab a rental and go. It's close to the showers and close enough to the water. It's cool. This is the ONLY place i ever rent from! I've done some research on rentals in the area looking at pricing and timing, and Jay's stays open the latest (until 8pm in the summer) and have the most affordable and reasonable all-day bike rental rate, in comparison to all the bike spots nearby. I haven't taken surf lessons from them yet, but one of my best friends has and she loved it, said the lessons were awesome and fun. Highly recommend it! read more

My one and only wish when coming to California for the first time, was to go roller skating on Venice Beach. Thank's to Jay's Rental, I did this without breaking the bank. It only cost me $8 to throw on some skates and have a great time! He looks really busy, but some how managed to multi-task and get me my skates within 5 minutes of me walking through the front of the rental shop. It's in a great location, right in front of the Venice Beach Banner, and right behind the signature statue. It was a little shaky at first since it had been a while since I put on some skates, but it was fun nonetheless. I was able to skate past talented street musicians, muscle beach and even get a good workout. Wen I go back, I'm definitely getting that dual seating bike so I don't have to worry about falling. Jay's Rentals is located right on the boardwalk, so you can rent a bike/surfboard/skate for Venice Beach! The owner and the clerk were super nice. The clerk gave us $10 discount on luggage check (It's $10 per bag and we had 3 bags!). The price for rentals is reasonable too. My friends and I visited this place last week to rent out roller skates so we can skate around Venice boardwalk. I had a pleasant experience last time I was here, so I brought my friend here. There were 2 young skaters running the shop and they gave off very creepy vibes first of all, and gave very inappropriate comment, saying,"If you want to see me skateboard naked, I can give you the address." We were shook to find him saying it so boldly, but since it was the only place available to rent skates, we ignored the comment anyways. Once we came to return the skates, they insisted to take pictures for their instagram, which we felt very uncomfortable already, and brought a drunk fat man to pose with us, which he grabbed our shoulders so tightly and our faces were so close it was SO gross. But the staff didn't say anything and just took picture of us with that stranger. Later when we were leaving, the staff proceeded saying,"Let me know if you want my address!" (Referring to comment earlier). That was absolutely disrespectful, sexual harassing us like it was nothing. We clearly was very uncomfortable but kept pushing the boundaries. It also happened too quick that its hard to act in that moment, but regardless - I urge you to never support this business and especially if you are young woman at Venice beach, PLEASE avoid this area - there's so many catcalling and even had one following us around and it's really scary. read more

We had a coupon for one free bike rental from our hotel. The second bike rental was $20 for the whole day, which seemed to be the market rate. The employee working was very helpful, and explained the different types of bikes that they rented. They will put a basket on the bike if you want. They hold a credit card or drivers license and away you go. It is cash only, so they don't put anything on the credit card. Bring the bike back, toss them a twenty, and that was that. read more

I am a poor blader at best, but the Boy and I recently decided that we should go and do outdoor exercise thing since we live in California and all, so we set off to find a place to rent skates in the nearest beach-adjacent area to us - Venice. The parking in the area is absolutely atrocious - one time we circled for a half hour before giving up and paying $10 for the lot next door - but Jay's itself is a solid rental option. It fits right in on the Venice boardwalk - a jumble of equipment, a big colorful sign, tanned, built, surfer-y staffers. The staffers in question are very friendly and helpful, happy to pull out a folding chair so you can put on your skates, and to hold your street shoes for you while you're off wobbling the boardwalk. An hour costs only $6 (and they've been known to be a bit generous with that hour should you return a few minutes late) and as that is about all my skills can stand, it's a cheap and easy way to get outside and moving. Sure, the equipment is a bit old, but so far it has totally worked every time, and it's a quick and easy in-and-out. Just remember to bring socks, sunscreen, and your ID (to leave as collateral) - and go have fun! (They also have bikes, boogie boards, etc., but so far I've only tried the blades.) read more

Yeee Haaa! Took a surf lesson on Sunday with Dani Scherrer at Breakwaters on Sunday! Dani took me out on a 9 foot long board and I had a blast! The first thing I learned was that I was trying to ride waves way too big, on a board way too short, for my skill level and stamina. Dani taught me about tide conditions and which times best suit the breaks I surf for my skill level. I also got a good feel for how the actual wave takes over and recognizing that moment to pop up. Not only did Dani patiently drill the proper pop up technique into my muscle memory before we went out into the water, he provided me a regimen of daily excises to workout on land, so I'd be better fit to surf when I do get out. I definitely recommend Dani and Jay's Rentals to anyone looking to get results in a single surf lesson. I went out last night during the huge swell on an 8ft longboard and had a blast riding the whitewash and reformed beach breaks! Thanks Jason for recommending Dani! read more

I had a surfing lesson with one of their lifeguard-certified surfing instructors, Kenny. He showed me the basics of surfing on the beach before heading into the water. I had a great time catching my first wave. It was hard, but extremely rewarding and fun. Their surf lessons are $70 for an hour of one-on-one instruction, including the board and wetsuit. You can't beat that. And included in the price, they let you use the board and wetsuit an hour after the lesson so you can catch as many waves as you want. All of the workers at the shop were great. This review is only for surf board and wet suit rental. I was in Venice very early in the morning and they were the only open shop that rents boards and wet suit. Shop person Jason was very helpful, I got a board and suit right away. They had a place that I was able to change outfit into wet suit. They also allowed me to store my backpack and shoes. Board and suit was not the best, but I rented at other Venice and SM places and did not see any difference. Overall, good price (total 28 for two hours), very good customer service, okay quality boards and suits. Tip: Make sure to have ID if you want to rent anything. read more

My niece and I arrived at an event on Saturday morning, bringing our spring suits thinking we'd be warm enough. It was raining, and colder than we expected with no signs of it burning off. Our event started at 9AM, so we searched Yelp for a rental shop to get a full suit. We were greeted by a nice guy (maybe Daniel) who measured us up for full suits and got us out the door by 8AM for $20.00 for the day!!! We took the suits back at 3PM as the event was over and was met by the owner, Javier. He asked how the day was, how the suits were and why we were in town, noticing my out-of-town ID. We told him we were in town with "Life Rolls On". A foundation with teams of volunteers, that takes out people with "disabilities" surfing for the day, giving them a day in the water, surfing and hanging out with people who recognize their "abilities". Javier listened to our story, and offered us a discount, saying what we were doing was admirable, and hoped we would be back to his shop again. Great Guys! Great Service! We will be back! read more
