I would like to call the Jean Pierre Bakery mediocre but that would be too kind; in fact, it's not a stretch to say I would prefer to dine with the neighborhood bear in our hotel's dumpster--the food and service may be better. We ordered a french dip, crab bisque, and the french onion soup: simple, classic dishes. The french dip and crab bisque were fine; not good, not bad. Not worth the trip to Durango but no complaints. The French Onion soup was abysmal. Have you ever been served a french onion soup without cheese? neither had we--until tonight. We asked the waitress if this is how it is normally served, cheeseless, that is. She assured us it was not, and took it to the kitchen. We observed the chef (sous chef?) grab what appeared to be a large baseball and throw it in the soup. I know it's MLB postseason, but this is not the way to compensate for your home-state team not making it to the playoffs. This glob melted in the soup and remained a warm, onion flavored lump of cheese. I truly can't believe they charged us for it--or that we paid for it. Next time we visit Durango, we will not stop here. Maybe we will eat dinner with the bear, maybe not, but either way, it cannot be worse than our meal at Jean Pierre Bakery. read more

Jean-Pierre (The owner of this fine establishment) is a legitimate Frenchmen, which is what makes all of their pastries, breads, and overall food so delicious and authentic. So, surprisingly it is possible to find real, good french food in the southwest corner of Colorado. My mom has taken me here for lunch on my birthday a couple years in a row, and each time I would get a roast beef sandwich. Not because I am a big fan of roast beef (I'm actually partial to turkey.. Not that that's important, haha), but because this sandwich is very close to perfection. The bread is crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside, delicious (as to be expected from a french bakery), the meat is sliced perfectly thin, the thin layer of sauce spread on the bread is wonderful, and when you take a bite its a perfect blend of flavors. MM, so good. The decor inside is adorable, it looks like a barn almost, all made up of brick and aged-looking wood. It's very old fashioned, they play on the French bakery theme a lot, and it works. Their pastries are also to die for, I've gotten their croissants and strawberry tarts a couple times and have never been disappointed, they are perfect little French pastries, meticulously made, they are so pretty you almost don't want to eat them. But you really do, because they taste great. The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is their prices. There is a reason that the majority of the times I've eaten here it's been my mom's treat. It's pretty steep, and while their food is almost worth it, I'd rather not spend that much for a sandwich on a daily basis. read more

This was the absolute worst restaurant I have ever been in my life. The food was awful and so not worth the money. After paying $33 for scallops and $28 for Coq au Vin I expected it to be good. The scallops were almost hard and tasteless. The chicken came in a soup bowl full of liquid and dryer than a bone. I don't mind paying for good food but this place was so disappointing. First and foremost, don't order an orange juice for your child. It was fresh squeezed (sounds good, right?), pulpy (less good), room temp (not good), and $8 (still tormenting over that). My husband enjoyed his stuffed croissant, which was really just a ham and egg croissant sandwich, but it was not worth the price. My daughter had a side of scrambled eggs that were fine. As a previous commenter, we had the veggie sandwich (croissant was good and chevre cheese generous) but the onion soup---a small crock for $13.25--was abysmal. Thin, flavorless, and cheese on bottom, floating like flotsam in the thin liquid. My companion is a chef and makes an excellent onion soup himself so when he choice to order this he was very disappointed. In addition, no soup spoons with the soup. Had a great breakfast -- I had the fruit filled crepes, which were delicious and my husband had the country breakfast, which was huge and he said awesome! We have eaten here several times. Sometimes we go just for dessert and coffee. It is an interesting restaurant as it was formerly an old slaughterhouse once. It is rustic and it has a rustic French farm feel but the owner also has some interesting paintings on the wall. They have a happy hour in which they showcase some of their wines. The food is always good and the lobster bisque is superb. Since they are a bakery, make sure to ask for a bread basket with the bisque. Bisque costs 11.90 a bowl and plan on spending $12-15 per person for lunch. It is a quiet and cozy place most of the time. read more

I asked for French press coffee (this has a French name, so I assumed they would have French press)....nope. I ended up ordering an Americano and received a regular (mediocre) cup of coffee. We only bought pastries to go from the bakery. Wonderful bakery especially considering they are baking at altitude. The butter croissant was buttery and flaky. 10/4/2014 lunch We ordered 2 lunch specials at $20 each, 2 coffees and we bought some bakery products to take home. I was disappointed for the following reasons: 1. I found hair inside my sandwich 2. Outside of our 2 coffee mugs was dirty, it looked like old coffee stains 3. When I complained to the gentleman by the front door (the host?), he apologized, but didn't even offer cleaner coffee mugs! Worst experience! $65 for 4 course meal for New Years. Appetizer was artichoke leaves with beets and some kind of crab bisque on it. Main meal steak with gravy? Vegetables were plated on each corner. Dessert was Creme brûlée only they had it way too much liquor which made it soup and served it with grapes and cantaloupe??? Table had hole on it which they covered with table cloth and we set drink in it which spilled everywhere. They said we don't usually put table cloth on it?? Top it off waitress wasn't trained well on how to handle situation. We did get approx 20% off which still left me a $170 bill. Upon entering the restaurant at 4:30 p.m. we were greeted by the host / bartender whom at first seemed friendly and outgoing. After further exposure to him we realized that he was intoxicated. Fortunately for us he decided that our table of five was not going to be enough fun for him and chose to concentrate on the women at the bar. We had a lovely young lady as our server which was the only pleasant part of the entire evening. She and the young man running the bakery were left to cover the entire restaurant while the bartender continued to be loud and obnoxious and at one point said to the women at the bar "here is your F'n check". The food served was not the fine French cuisine expected for the prices charged it was old, tired and unispired food in need a new life. A medium rare steak came out raw and barely edible. We didn't send it back because it had already been over two hours since being seated and we had given up any hope of having a lovely dinner. The only reason I gave 1 star was for the young lady doing her best to provide good setvice in an impossible situation. read more

On paper, this place is first rate- a cute french bakery/restaurant for a touch of civility in Durango? Wonderful. The interior space is nice, open and airy- a bakery section to one side and rustic wooden tables and chairs to the other for sit down dining. But the service and food don't cut it. I recently stopped in for breakfast and was disappointed on just about every front. My friend ordered an omelet- both the sausage and the cheese were left out! Sorry, but in my world, omitting cheese from an omelet is not acceptable. I ordered breakfast crepes- they arrived pale and cold, stuffed with honeydew melon (ew) with a few strawberry slices poking out the ends. My plate was obviously thrown together- a huge swoosh of strawberry juice ran from one crepe to the end of the plate. Yeah- a little thing, but I don't think it's too much to expect for a $12+ breakfast. My server never brought the lavender syrup that went with the crepes, so I sat and tried to flag somebody down. On the plus side, when I finally did and they heard of my unhappiness with the crepes they were quick to take them away- I ordered an omelet like my friend. Yep, mine came short both the ham and the cheese I'd ordered! Unbelievable. So the place tried on paper to win me over- great concept, the service tried to make right with me when they were not busy running past. But they just kept screwing up- the problems were not random, they were obviously systemic. When breakfast for 3 comes out to $60 with tip, this is unacceptable. I suppose that's the breaks for a place that probably has huge turnover in staff with the coming and goings of students and summer lifestyle inhabitants. Not this customer's problem though- next trip I'll be happier eating at the diner down the street. Extra star for the good croissant- and the apricot preserves were delightful. read more

VERY VERY disappointed.One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. My girlfriend and I were excited about going to this little french bakery one block away from our hotel. I wish we would have read the yelp reviews before going!! The interior ambiance was wonderful and beautifully constructed. However, nothing could have prepared us for their miserable food. We were sat by a very polite young boy who couldn't have been more than 12 and instantly added to the charm of a "family run shop." We ordered two coffees from the nice female server and were served two cold/lukewarm cups. Mine was also coated with coffee grounds. So, we had to ask for a fresh batch. It wasn't that big of a deal, but it was nearly freezing and raining outside and not much warmer in the restaurant. So, we also asked to be moved by the gas fireplace - the only heat source, but a nice touch. The place was completely empty with the exception of one family in the back room - kind of odd for a Sunday morning. I had been craving a nice big plate of eggs benedict and noticed that it was available for $15. Everything felt overpriced and with that we had certain expectations. However, what I got was a chewy croissant topped with cheap, super thin, slice of square deli ham, and eggs. The hollandaise was fine, but the side of potatoes was literally burnt to a crisp and inedible. A slice of orange and spinach leaf garnished the dish but appeared to have been left out too long as the orange was dried up and the spinach was wilted and nasty looking. It was borderline unsanitary and very unappetizing. I'm not a picky eater, it was the first time I can remember sending a plate of food back. So, instead of re-ordering, we focused on my girlfriend's quiche - which was actually ok. The one redeeming quality of the entire experience was our kind server. She felt so embarrassed about our experience that she offered us a few free pastries to go. Needless to say, we will not be back for breakfast again. If you're looking for a decent pastry though, you might get lucky. read more

I really do enjoy dining here. We eat out probably three meals a week. Sometimes more. My husband and I really enjoy coming for a bottle of wine, the free cheese platter. Very nice selection of cheeses. The bad news is the prices of their salads and soups. Way too high. $15 for a Caesar salad is way over priced. Today several of my friends went for lunch. The french onion soup was outrageous. Over $12 for a small bowl of soup. Your food is very nice, but dont over price everything. The locals wont support it and the tourists wont come in. Avoid this place like the plague. Take a short drive to Bread for a wonderful bakery experience instead. Jean-Pierre is like the worst cliche of a Parisian restaurant: overpriced, serving bland food with indifference. Our family had breakfast there and were astounded at how bad the service was. The food was on the mediocre side of okay, except that it had a very healthy price tag. I imagine that the only reason this restaurant stays in business is because of the steady flow of tourists that visit Durango. It certainly can't be because of return business. read more
