I thought it was pretty cool to host such an event here. I also enjoy history, so I took advantage of exploring the property. I felt like I was time traveling, if the walls could tell a story, what secrets they behold. If you get a chance, take a ride out here and explore the grounds. Beautiful view of Detroit and Ontario from the top of the fort lookout point. I plan to come back for midnight tour and paranormal event.

The National Theatre is the only survivor from Detroit's first theater district and the only…read moretheater known to be designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn. The National opened Sept. 16, 1911, as a vaudeville house. Its exterior is a Baroque-Moorish-Beaux-Arts hybrid with a Moroccan or Egyptian flavor. There isn't anything else like it in the city's friendly confines. It's been a long, crazy road for the National, from vaudeville to movies to burlesque to porn to abandonment. There have been several plans pitched to save this neglected gem. Fortunately, it was spared from demolition with the rest of the Monroe Block about 25 years ago. The Civil War-era buildings that lined Monroe have sat undeveloped and vacant ever since. Still, without a developer with a vision, it's likely the National will continue to fall into even greater disrepair and Detroit will lose an irreplaceable piece of its past. Word on the street is that the Monumental Kitty works just like the Sphinx: if you don't answer his riddle he gets to eat you. During my latest visit to Corktown I visited him every morning, to feed him by incorrectly answering his riddle. But, selfless cat that he is, he let me live. It's an appropriate symbol of Detroit's fighting spirit and civic engagement that such an inspired sculpture took control of the pedestrian overpass even as the old Tiger Stadium across the I-75 got blasted into rubble. Thanks to the vision and technical skill of North Corktown artist Jerome Ferretti, the efforts of neighborhood volunteers, some funding from local businesses, and a very successful Kickstarter campaign, this nine-foot-diameter cat head is as good as nine-foot-diameter cat heads get.

It was completed in 1929 during the city's automotive boom. It is also often referred to as the Cathedral of Finance. It's a breathtaking Art Deco design inside and out. It was staffed well, and they were very friendly, attentive, and accommodating. I was happy to see plenty of seating available. They even brought out more throughout the evening as the crowd grew. The Packard plant was opened in 1903 and at the time was considered the most modern automobile manufacturing facility in the world, with skilled craftsmen involved in over eighty trades. The factory complex closed in 1958. Considering it's been empty for 60 years it's structure is still solid. There's so much revitalization happening in Detroit I hope at least part of this big beautiful structure is repurposed. I haven't done the Pure Detroit tour yet but I hope to do so this summer. I was respectful of the No Trespassing signs and aware of the potential danger of entering unsafe buildings so my wandering was limited to the parameters only, but I really wanted to do inside some of those buildings!!!

Currently, it's an office building with a theater showing Broadway quality shows, and some shops and restaurants on the ground floor. One of the most recognizable sights on Detroit's skyline, the building is also known as "The Golden Tower." The original gold-leaf tiles on the tower were covered with asphalt during WWII for fear of bombing. Following the war the damaged gold tiles were replaced with green terra cotta tiles that are illuminated gold at night.

Detroit. #hamilton I have been planning this moment since I'd been informed that Hamilton was coming back in March -- and I don't think I fully understood the depths of my devotion to making it happen until I saw my mother's face. She had surgery just days before. She couldn't clap too hard. None of that stopped her from being completely, uncontainable, childlike giddy. It is not often that adult children get to see their parents that way -- eyes dancing, joy uncontained. I got to see it Sunday night. The cast -- predominantly Black and brilliant. Culturally, that matters deeply to me and my former Black Panther mother. I want to be clear, however: everyone on that stage gave everything. The dancers. The vocals. The lighting. The set. Collective excellence. That's what live performance does -- it doesn't let you just watch. It makes you witness. And then there's the #FisherBuilding itself. I love theatres. I see grand architecture as art. Every time I enter a building -- big or small -- I stop at the door and take it all in. The Fisher is what I imagine true opulence looks like: 40 kinds of marble, crystal and bronze, green terra cotta tiles, light that gives the whole space a warm, illuminated gold effect -- earning its name as "Detroit's largest art object." The staff moved with the same coordinated energy as the performers. Dennis (Head Usher and my old Detroit Opera House colleague) greeted me with a big hug and put Mommie in her wheelchair with care, walking her straight to dashing security -- who told her she looked like royalty -- an African Queen. Raul was assigned to her for the entire night and showed up like family. The bartenders argued -- warmly, playfully -- over who got to take care of her. And I cannot even discuss all of the examples of kindness from the patrons to me and each other, because this post will be longer than it already is. The usher at the door walked me through my QR code, and managed that entire line with authority and warmth. I told my sisters -- watching our mother's face glow that night, opened something in me I cannot name. I am addicted now. Addicted to chasing that look on their faces. For as long as I have breath and means, I will keep finding ways to put you all in rooms that make your eyes dance. Some nights just settle into you differently. This is one of them. Thank you, Fisher Theatre & Fisher Building for giving me one of those nights.

John Judson Bagley, Michigan's 16th governor (1873-1877), left $5,000 in his will for a public…read moredrinking fountain that would provide "water cold and pure as the coldest mountain stream." Bagley was also Detroit's police commissioner and a key figure in founding the Republican Party and Michigan Mutual Life Insurance Company. The fountain was designed in 1885 by Henry Hobson Richardson after one in Venice's St. Mark's Basilica and is made from pink granite. It features four lion heads. It has moved around Detroit a few times, landing here in Cadillac Square in 2007. It the only surviving work by Richardson in the Detroit area, making it a rare architectural gem and while it wasn't flowing today, it's still worth stopping to check out. They offer a tour (well worth the $20 price tag) that starts out with a yummy adult bevvie and takes you through their distilling process, rickhouse, bottling, and event spaces. Our tour guide, Michael, was very personable and fun and made the tour quite entertaining. Loved the little stories along the way. Highly recommend - we'll be back again as we enjoy distillery tours and usually have to go to Kentucky for good ones like this.
