If your church or organization offers beer with their fish fry, message me the name! $3 Madtree beers outshine anything on the food menu for me! I had the $7 cod sandwich with flavorless, dry mac and cheese and slaw. This fish fry is held in the school cafeteria and they do a great job of setting up their pay booth before you walk into the cafeteria and get in line for food. The water and lemonade jugs are easily available along with the condiment table. They don't use trays so keep that in mind if it's your turn to carry multiple plates while you friend holds your spot at the table. Since the table seat 8 or 10 and most families aren't that big, we found plenty of people willing to share their table with our large group which overflowed from another table.

The parking in the…read morelot fills up quickly, but there's usually plenty of it on the narrow side streets near the church. If you have trouble finding the fry, just follow your nose until you spot the people outside battering and frying dat fish. The line was almost to the door when I got there at 6:20pm but it wasn't so bad, with drinks available for purchase while you're in line at the take out cashier. Everyone was in good spirits, chatting with each other in line and at the shared round cafeteria tables. There are two separate lines for takeout and eating in, and it's done fairly efficiently. The portions are plentiful, and everything is tasty. This year, $9 got you 2 pieces of flaky fried haddock, 2 sides of your choosing (I recommend the sweet potato fries), coleslaw, and lemonade and water from a huge orange cooler. Definitely worth the wait and fighting the crowds. The fish was super tasty, and I've been told it's the best around. I've never actually been to any of the others yet, so I'll reserve that judgment for later.

Visited St Gertrude's in Madeira today. It's a pretty church with stained glass windows and it has…read morea more modern feel to it. There was a policeman directing traffic before and after church. The entire church was filled for Sunday mass. In the beginning, we were disappointed because it was difficult to understand what was being said via the microphone & speaker system. At first I thought it was me, but all four of us thought the same thing. Apparently we aren't the only ones as there was an announcement today that there is to be a new sound system put in. Good move on their part as I really liked what I could hear well. Was really shocked to see that there were 10 altar servers! I've never seen more than 4. It was nice to see so many youths wanting to participate during mass. The priest tried to make the homily a little more relatable; while discussing "Judge not, lest ye be judged" he used the popular vernacular of "don't judge me, bro". There is a lot of activity going on at St Gertrudes. Next week-end is the Pancake Breakfast, Children's Choir, Adult's Choir, Bible Study, Ladies of Charity, Marriage Enrichment Seminar, Scouts, Prayer Group, etc. There is a residency for Dominican Friars there and that is a wonderful blessing for the church and parishioners. Also, St Gertrudes has Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration! No wonder people are willing to drive a distance to come here.

Best damn preaching in the city!…read more Dominicans are known for their preaching but with a half dozen or more priests always in residency because of the seminary here, you are bound to find several you love and all are at least very good from the pulpit. Also with that many priest, if you want to set an appointment, they will be very accommodating, how many parishes can offer this level of service anymore?! None. Worth the trip. Families travel as far as an hour to go to mass at St. Gertrude. Saturday offers two confession times and three priests are usually hearing confessions and still they are are busy. The Holy Spirit is moving here. The best part is perpetual adoration, you no longer have to go to the Holy Spirit Center or Immaculate Heart of Mary for that.

Went to church here on Christmas Eve…read more The church is set up in a semi circle, this the pews being a little tighter, but bearable. If you need more room or have issues with kneelers, I recommend sitting closer to the front, so you're not on the incline. Dress seems mostly nice, a few Friday business casual in nice jeans and dress shorts. The choir sits on the right side when looking at the alter, so you may be behind them if you sit on that side. They also occasionally have a brass ensemble, which sounds really pretty. You can get to the church by Kenwood road, before 71, or Montgomery, behind the school.
