I first visited after wandering around DuPont Circle. I didn't know what to expect, but found an organized shop that warmed my stationery/journal-loving heart and emptied my wallet. The employees are warm, helpful, and knowledgeable. All of my questions about the different journals, inscriptions, and shipping were answered. I was able to buy gifts in the store and have them shipped to friends in other states. They have a fantastic selection of sentimental and funny cards and a nice little selection of pens and markers in the back. It's easy to come in for a birthday card and leave with the card, 2 pens, 21 other cards, a couple of stickers, and 3 journals. read more

I love this store. It's like the epitome of stationery stores, which are themselves the epitome of all goods sellers. I love supporting local stores, and this one makes it easy (but expensive) to do so. I have bought several journals here (some for myself, some as gifts-- amazing I have managed to restrain myself and not buy them all for myself), and almost all my cards-- last week I bought cards for three birthdays, sympathy for a departed cat, sympathy for a departed of a nonspecific species, and a beautiful but simple card that says 'Fuck Cancer.' I just now know that I can't come here for holiday cards (and also, they reinforced my assertion that when gentiles say "the holidays" they really don't mean minorities' holidays). Scene: mid-September Me: "Hi, would you please help me find your holiday cards?" She: "Oh, those aren't out yet." Me to me: "Turn awayyyy, just give up." Me to her: "Rosh Hashanah is in two weeks." She: "Oh, no, we aren't planning on stocking those." Chorus of cashiers: "Oh, she meant that one." Well, I guess they didn't know there was a market for them in a metropolitan area that's 9% Jewish. Ugh. I first tried Proper Topper up the street and had a similar exchange there, so ended up having to go to Papyrus and Paper Source. I hear Target also has nice R"H cards. I guess the big paper stores can afford to meet the demand. read more

I ran into this store on my way to an appointment. I give it 3.5 stars. I had to stop in because I wanted to find a nice journal and there was a sign on the windows saying ALL journal planners and calendars were 40% off . When I walked in, I was surprised to see that there were 3 employees standing at the register talking about personal things. The store was pretty empty with only me and another customer. I walked around for about 10 minutes, walking past the employees three times with no greeting, glance or service. Finally I walked to the back and a woman came from the back with a smile and asked if I needed help. I immediately thanked her and said yes. She walked with me past the 3 employees -- who then instantly stopped talking and separated. She helped me to find a great journal. When I checked out I was given the total but asked if the 40% had been taken off. Apparently, the sign was very misleading, even the cashier didn't understand it. She told me the 40% only applied to the journals on the wall, which I said was odd because the sign said "ALL" and it was on the front windows and posted all around the store. Maybe if she wasn't talking with the other employees and spending time learning the sales then she would've had the correct info. I ended up getting the journal but asking someone else about the sale. The sign was VERY misleading and unfair to have posted because it only applied to planners and calendars not regular journals. So I give this store 3.5 stars because of the bad customer service (the woman was the only reason i stayed and purchased) and the misleading advertisement. read more

What a robust collection of pens! I got my journal embossed and I came out with so many beautiful pens. As an avid bullet journal enthusiast I appreciate being able to go in person to test out all the pens on my paper rather than just ordering a bunch online! A wonderful selection of colored fine liners, gelly roll pens, artist's graphic markers and more. They have every "must have" bullet journallers item on the list (zebra mildliners, Sakura pigma fineliners) as well as some brands I hadn't heard of before like kuratake and ohto. The Midori Diary lay-flat dot grid with the goatskin cover is next on my wishlist! The only thing they don't have are tombow dual tip brush markers but I think those are overpriced anyway. The kuratake color twin pen they have is better in my opinion anyway. read more

Many brands you'd expect at an upscale journal store (Moleskine, Leuchtturm, etc) plus lots more lesser known ones plus Jenni Bick brand ones, which are gorgeous. I especially love the ones that close with a leather strap that wraps around. Some leather ones can be embossed for an extra $15 in less than an hour. There are also gorgeous photo albums and guest books that come in nice boxes, with leather covers, and which can be embossed. Staff very helpful and nice. Also available: pens, stationery, cards. But primarily it's journals, with an emphasis on ruled ones. I'll definitely be back to purchase more gifts! read more

In the past, I've felt lucky to have found small shops that had stationery and pens. Jenni Bick, on the other hand, is a mammoth of a stationery store. Notebooks, journals, planners, calendars, and stationery as far as the eye can see. A whole wall of pens and pencils. Office necessities like portfolios, binders, memo pads, and sticky notes. Fun accessories like pins, enamels, gift wrap, ribbons, etc. Leuchtturm 1917 notebooks in more than 3 colors! Midori MD notebooks lined with both sections and margins! Rhodia classic 16.5x12.5! TRAVELER'S Notebooks in black, brown, and camel with refills (lined, grid, blank, diary, zipper case, pocket stickers, double-sided stickers, the works)! They can also customize your notebooks with embossing. Caran D'Ache, Faber Castell, Kaweco, Lamy, Muji, Ohto, Retro 1951, Y Studio. So many fountain, rollerball, and ballpoint pens as well. You can try out the rollerballs and ballpoints. I'm unsure if you can test drive the fountain pens since they keep them in a locked case. In addition to their physical shop in Dupont Circle, you can also purchase items online for delivery or pick-up. Furthermore, they have workshops and other events. I love this shop! I was so excited when it opened and still pop in very regularly. It is a very well curated store of journals, notebooks, cards, pens, washi tape, and literally anything you might need to maintain your journal and planner. So far, I've bought more notebooks than I need because they have such a good selection. On top of that the staff is really friendly AND knowledgable. Whenever I have some questions (even silly ones) they're really full of helpful information and pro tips. I was trying to decide between two notebooks and was given details that I really wouldn't have known or realized. Even when I admitted that some of the deets were above my head, the person helping me my breaking it down and showing me examples so I can physically feel and see the difference. The one thing that I wish the store had was stationary! They do have a few types of quality resume paper and some pads of paper from MD Paper and Rhodia, and some smaller block pads of paper for notes. I specifically was looking for stationary to write letters to my son for him to read when he's older (I'm already sobbing don't @me) so I wanted something a little more special than blank paper. I guess for something like that I'll need to go to a Paper Source, but perhaps Jenni Bick will soon carry more stationary paper options?? June 18 2018 around 11:45 I was searching for the the perfect paper to write a meaningful letter and came across the personalization section in the back of the store. I found exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, and just as I found paper that was exactly perfect, a woman with short hair cane barreling out of the back room and basically barked at me yelling "those are not for sale and are for making the journals!" ..I told her this is what I'm looking for, and she just said "we have notepads"- not even close to what I needed. Didn't offer help, didn't explain any further about the available customization and how to utilize what I was looking at. A few minutes later she sat with another employee having a personal conversation nearby. Honestly I would have probably customized an entire journal if that was an option- I still don't know, because I was so caught off guard that I basically ran out of that section without even thinking. Unprofessional and rude. One star for eventually finding a packet that would be passable for my needs, and one star for the men at the register who were helpful when I asked if they had anything similar and directed me to a different store nearby. Really disappointed. I was looking forward to going there for the first time. I love notebooks and journals, especially with unique paper. Guess I'll try the other store. read more

I am so happy this store exists in D.C.! It's the perfect stationary store with painstaking detail on quality of paper, notebooks, pens, etc... archaic to find these days. I've been wanting the Midori traveller's notebook for a few years now. I didn't want to buy it online because at the time it was a big expense and shipped only from Japan. I wanted to get a feel for the journal before purchasing. This is the first place I've seen it sold! To make the journal even more special, they offer to monogram for $15. The monogram was very quick (they have someone in store who can do it) and took about 15 minutes. It came out absolutely beautiful and elevated from just a journal to a personalized keepsake. I know this journal will be one of my most prized possessions for years to come. I'm looking forward to visiting again and buying fountain pen friendly paper to refill the Midori. Highly recommend the store to anyone who likes stationary, and the staff is incredibly knowledgable and kind. read more

I stepped into this store last week.. it's very close to my office.. first let me say great customer service they are all very helpful and friendly. My coworker is a writer so we went in search of a new journal. They have such a variety of journals, agendas and pens it's like a writers heaven! It's very well organized and set up clearly. They have cards for all occasions also. I will definitely be returning when I am ready for a new journal! I dropped in here for the first time yesterday and was so happy I did. My sister bought me a traveler's journal here a couple months ago and we came back to find accessories for it yesterday. This place is a dream for a long time journaler like me. You can find all of your staple markers and pens but also greeting cards, stickers, puzzles and other gifts. There are journals available in a wide variety of price points and the prices are fair for what they offer. I visited with my brother who was looking to buy a journal and the sales associate was very nice and informative about the different brands and their quality. Vacationing in the Washington, D.C. area is always fun. Traveling from place to place on the Metro is such a trip. We decided to do some adventuring, with several bookstores and a couple stationary stores on our list. This store just opened in January 2017 though Jenni Bick Custom Journals have been online for 20 years now. As a new physical store, they are still figuring things out for the business so I'm super excited to see it grow even more. When talking to Jenni Bick herself, I can see myself coming here regularly as there is just so much positive vibe from her and her store. There is a small corner in the back to work on your journaling and to test out pens and journal papers. She's thinking of expanding the area since it's a place loved by many of the people who come by. I could see myself sitting in this store for so long (I mean, I already did just trying to make decisions on what to buy) to work on my journal. I can't wait to see this store grow. I opted to get 2 journals and have one of them personalized. The personalization took less than 20 minutes!! The staff was so attentive and kind. Embossing is $15 per line (with a character limit of around 20 - 25 characters), but it's worth it! During my visit here on a Thursday evening, an associate spent around 30 minutes helping me to decide exactly what I wanted and showing me samples of how the embossing might come out. Jenni Bick sells all sorts of journals, cards, writing utensils, paper, etc. I have come here on multiple occasions and have found items from Leuchtturm, Nuuna, Foxy Fix, Lamy, Moleskine, Rhodia and many other reputable brands. They also have scratch pads in the back so you can test out various pens, pencils, and highlighters. I have not gotten one of their custom journals yet, but I will soon! The store is always clean and well-organized. Lastly, there are always multiple friendly staff members on the floor ready to greet and help you if needed. Jenni's Bick Fine Customer Journals makes my TOP FIVE of all time! I happened upon this shop in search of a place in DC to purchase my Hobinichi accesssories; never truly expecting to find any place in the city but much to my surprise Jenni Bick Fine Custom Journals popped up in my Yelp search (hahah)! This quaint shop is layered with the most lovey products including my all coveted Hobonich on front and center display. I could spend HOURS on hours just feeling, looking, reading and browsing the perfectly chosen selection of journals, planners, parchment paper, writing instruments and so, so much more!. I even found a lovely pop-up "Fairy" book of books to create and construct yourself for my nice in Paris. I can hardly wait for her to unwrap the treasure, which I am sure my little Miss lovely will cherish for a life time. I cannot wait to have a substantial amount of time to spend just browsing in leisure and taking in all of the options including trying my hand at learning and practicing calligraphy! You will find that you are left to browse and discover alone which is nice but with so many options I would appreciate a more hands on and friendlier approach from the Shop Conservators; they were a bit stand-off'ish...
