A French patisserie located not five minutes from the bustling Winchester high street, this little cake and sweet shop is modest and even a little bit nostalgic of that excitement as a child over delicious treats and sweets. Although the shop itself is tiny and some products are a tad pricey, it is a great place to catch up with friends in a cosy, friendly atmosphere. The staff are very aware of decoration, atmosphere and art and they are all extremely hard-working. The shop is cash and cheque only, which to some may be inconvenient. I had the Railway Lamb which was succulent, soft and melt in the mouth. The sauce is deep in flavours, too many to pick out. My girlfriend had the Naga Chicken, which was hot and spicy but not overpowering. Again so many flavours. I think that this hidden gem is now my favourite place to eat. It is based in Weavers Walk which is towards the clocktower end up town. Although many of the shops has changes in the arcade, the cafe is always there. I often go there before work for a take-away bacon and sausage sandwhich. The cafe offers indoor seating over 2 levels and outdoor tables. They also have highchairs available. The atmosphere is friendly and have plenty of staff to cover busy periods, all which know what they are doing. The owners also treat you as a friend and not just another customer, and are happy to put up local posters/business cards. They offer a wide range of drinks, including excellent ice-cream milkshakes. Chicken Caesar Salad: Crisp romaine lettuce, salty crispy bacon pieces and very moist chicken breast. The dressing was lightly drizzled on (which I had asked for on the side which they forgot about), but it was ok as they didn't drown the salad. I took a few bites of the steak sandwich: "Medium" = "medium well" in US standards. At least that's how this steak was prepared. But the meat was tender and flavorful, so it was still good. Came with some salted sauteed mushrooms and onions on top of the steak, sandwiched between 2 pieces of focaccia bread. Also came with a side salad and fries/"chips." The prices were fair, but the service was slow. Almost painfully slow. It was crazy to me that it took over 30 minutes for the table that was seated just before us, to receive chips and eggs, and the soup of the day. I figure the soup has been prepared before hand, and it only takes 2 minutes to fry an egg... why would it take SOO long to get those out? I understand the kitchen was probably going at full steam, but it seems that they could be more efficiently run. I was starving by the time I received my salad, and the place was 1/2 empty by the time we finished eating. This was fine as i'm on vacation right now, but geeze lowise, i'd like to get my food a little quicker... especially when it's easy food to prepare. But, I do appreciate that it wasn't bland but instead tasted very fresh, and the service was friendly. There was a lot of Seabiscuit paraphernalia which was pretty interesting to look at.

First things first. As with any coffee-specific shop the customer is supposed to be drawn toward the counter with a big shinny fancy espresso machine. Everything in this business revolves around the machine and this is what customers expect to pay good money for. Blue onion has a crap machine, no argument. Second is the quality of coffee. The beans are, to my taste, frankly bland. No real flavour, not even something I can critique as there's no acidity, no sweetness, or no earthiness that I can discern. I'm not sure what they use here and perhaps that another problem. The beans are THE most important part of good coffee, so why doesn't this place advertise theirs? If it's good quality there should be nothing to hide. Third problem with blue onion is decor. Seriously, hire an interior decorator here!!! The most accurate word to describe is ugly. Cheesy, mixed style, linoleum flooring, exposed dirty kitchen equipment is not an inviting atmosphere. My god this is an eyesore! Fourth problem is 'brand.' This place claims to be an espresso shop, "coffee artisans" at that. So why are there all these photos whipped cream covered "cappachilla's" everywhere?! What the hell is a cappachilla anyway? This place needs to focus on the coffee, not compete with Starbucks over some invented drink to give us all diabetes. This idea to compete with Costa or Nero or Starbucks is evident everywhere in this place, from the unappetising prepackaged food to the music to the drinks. Ugh, it makes me cringe. Blue onion needs to close for 6 months and start from scratch. Better looks, better ideas, and most importantly better espresso!
