Lakeview Church - Praise before At the Movie Series

Lately they have been doing the "At the movies series" where they take a movie and relate it to the word. I truly enjoy these times as it is a very modern way to teach and learn, along with being entertaining. The church turns into a movie theater by dimming the lights, playing snippets of the movie, and offering a snack (bag of popcorn) and water. It is enlightening to take a movie and relate it to the Bible. How amazing? Also, the main lobby has several photo op stations set up which to me is super cool and fun. Pics for memories right?!? Services on Sunday are offered at 9a & 11a. Greeters are usually present upon entering and a coffee stand is located in the main lobby for self service. I love how they offer coffee because I usually don't get my daily dose before church. There is a cafe on the main floor, south end of the building, but I have yet to check it out. This church provides a separate area for babies, preschoolers, grade schoolers and junior high aged kids which is nice because the service can be catered for that specific age. They have two levels. The main auditorium has seating on the first floor and the balcony on the second floor, plenty of seating to accommodate everyone. During Covid, they do have restrictions with every so many seats blocked off. Restrooms are available on the main floor, with a mother nursing room located in the women's restroom. Worship occurs at the beginning of church with singing and musicians. Service can last about an hour and a half. The end of service follows with more worship and optional praying with prayer partners. They offer many services for out reach and being involved in the community. They also offer classes to grow spiritually and become more connected.

John Knox Presbyterian Church - Wheelchair lift in sanctuary

It's an area that I grew up in and I was anxious to revisit the area today as I attended a friend's installation as the new pastor at John Knox. John Knox is a member of PC-USA, the more progressive side of the Presbyterian denomination (PCA is the more conservative side). I'm not sure what membership is here, however, it seems to be a modestly sized congregation with a diversity that reflects the diversity of the area. This is also fairly close to International Marketplace and there's a strong blending of white, Black, Hispanic, and immigrants within this area. It's a diversity I'm very comfortable with and I honestly enjoyed it quite a bit. In terms of accessibility, John Knox has about 4-5 parking spaces just off the main entrance of the church. The church does have a push-button automatic door. I went to a restroom that seemed pretty light in terms of accessibility, however, I later saw signage indicating an accessible restroom. I was also super impressed to see that the sanctuary also includes a lift so that wheelchair users (and it was apparent the congregation had at least one) can serve even at the pulpit or in worship roles. Bravo for that. I don't know a lot about the church's history, though I do know it existed when I was growing up in the area - I was not yet Presbyterian (I am now) and did not attend. I did have one congregant explain that their last installed pastor was there for 17 years and they'd been searching for a new pastor for the last five years. Rev. Kelley Jepsen is the new pastor - I knew her from her time as a Lake Fellow at Second Presbyterian. She should be an amazing fit for this congregation. Sunday service is at 10am; their Sunday School options are after the service and start at 11am. Attire is pretty open (as I've generally found with the Presbyterian denomination - some show up in suits; others in jeans). I'm a bit of a slob and have never gotten a snarky comment. They do stream their services online. The music is pretty traditional. I felt very comfortable here. While the church seems modest-sized, they've definitely done a lot to be open to those with disabilities. It's not perfect, however, it is quite good. I love churches where I, a wheelchair user, would feel comfortable serving and where I have that option to serve whatever my gifts would be. That seems true at John Knox. While I have a home church, I felt comfortable here and will no doubt return to hear Rev. Kelley. This was a great visit with friendly people, an accessible church, and a comfortable atmosphere.
