The prices have gone up substantially and the the employees are the worst. The bakery always makes the cinnamon twist donuts that look like male fertility symbols. Moldy bread and produce left out on the shelves, even after notifying employees. They just say "this isn't my department". The always stoned deli children ask how you want your slices, then proceed to turn the thickness back up so they don't have to make as many passes. The in store online shopper employees have to be on some kind of time tracking system because they are terribly rude to the in store shopping customers. Racist white cashiers, racist black cashiers, all the cashiers are terrible except for the hard of hearing ladie (she's awesome and deserves a raise). Took the grandkids a 11am no chkn nuggets, 2 cups of tater tots, and 3 hot dogs, that's all they had out! We went back at 3pm after school, the whole thing was empty. The peppers on sale for .69 (1) red pepper, I asked, nope sorry thats all we have. This store is terribly managed, it's the same week after week after week. Hate to say this....disgusting practice! I recently tried to purchase Some Manischewitz brand products from this store...Matzo ball soup mix ,and some Matzos crackers. No dice! All Manischewitz products have been pulled from the shelves of this store! I asked the manager, he told me that these products hadn't been stocked for "three years", well, I told the I had purchased items by this brand after that time. Response " well, I'm not sure of the exact date". Can you imagine a store where you can't buy matzos? Jeez! Sorry about the profanity.? BTW...I'm not Jewish....but I am singled out by the fact that I'm a bit of a historian. Also...in the ethnic food aisle, the word Kosher has been Removed... It remains in other stores in my area! Each person that I have spoken in different departments has done a really great job to help me. PROS: This Jewel provides a great variety of fresh and prepared produce (pesto, pasta salad, pre-cut veggies, and take home dinners, marinaded meats etc). Affordable boxed, canned and home goods can be found here - no better place in a 5 mile radius for your high-quality, non-perishable food items. You can't beat $5 bag of bagels Sunday. Daily deals and specials will help you save $$$. Consistent staff throughout the years, they get to know you as a local. Open until midnight. The deli and bakery also do catering for events, holidays and meetings. CONS: Many other Jewel-Osco stores have received the "grocer-raunt" upgrade - and unfortunately, this store has not. No salad bar, no fresh juice, no sushi, etc. read more

This Jewel has gone down the drain!!! I only wish we'd get a Mariano's Grocery store near by. If Becky isn't in the meat department you can forget it! When she's not at work I actually drive to the North side of Waukegan to Cribbs Meat Market which is more expensive but great customer service and meat. The management at Jewel is not much better than the staff all with HORRIBLE ATTITUDES. If Diane isn't in the cold cuts again it's not worth it because the service is horrible! Forget about the bakery they can't understand anything but chocolate and vanilla cakes! The cashiers are ok with the exception of the RUDE black lady with purple hair; she seems to believe she owns Jewel. I ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS and most Jewel stores they're terrible in terms of CUSTOMER SERVICE and waiting!!!! RUN, RUN, RUN find another place to grab grocery! Jeff the manager is rude too. Jewel, I really want to like you. You are two miles from my house but a million miles from my heart. I feel like I'm shopping at a prison work camp in your store. 95% of your employees act and speak as if they are indentured servants. They are depressing and not your best PR people to say the least. You have one cashier who has been there for years (tall, with blonde hair, maybe reddish now) who works later shifts who is FANTASTIC and another who is hearing impaired who is also fantastic and more in tuned to the customers than the rest added together. I have recently bought produce from you only to go home and find it spoiled. I returned mushrooms less than 24 hours after I bought them. the return with a receipt was handled with disdain as if your service desk person thought I was a criminal. Uncross your arms, wipe the frown off your face and quit grilling me like you work for CSI Waukegan. They are $2.49 of bad mushrooms. I was happy to see that after insisting on smelling them and inspecting the package, you agreed with me. And no, I didn't want another foul package. The one I had ruined a dinner. My other recent complaint was about waiting in line 12 minutes at the self checkout at about 7pm for someone to clear an error. Apparently, someone had gone on break and nobody was minding the store. Very poor coverage!!!!! One of your service people told me that they are trying to run almost purely on self checkout in the evenings after 8. Are you kidding me? Again, I have tried to reach out with constructive criticism but apparently nobody is minding the store at your corp HQ either. i want to love you. HELP! read more

Horrible service. They did not put my mymix info in correctly so I did not get the savings. I was directed to customer service. They called someone to come to customer service desk twice. I ended up leaving after ten minutes of standing there. Also note, this was early in the morning so it was not busy at all. I left and called customer service. I spoke with Samantha and her explanation was that she didn't hear the call for her... twice. She told me to come in later. I was trying to come up with a different solution and she hung up on me. I called back and she didn't say her name this time and and claimed she didn't know corporate's number. Yes I can get it myself thank you. Samantha should really learn some problem solving skills and hanging up on a customer that is trying to figure out how your job works is not a solution. Every other time I come here it is short staffed and chaotic. I figured I'd get some better service during non peak hours. Nope. Just awful! Close it down! Will not be returning. It's been 6 months or so since the last review on this Jewel. My gripes about it: The organic/ special foods aisle is a mess!!!!! I g/f, so trying to find the gluten-free items where they are supposed to be would be helpful. I think the produce is too high, but that's a matter of chain policy. ANYWHO- The bakery here is FABULOUS!!!! If you have a special occasion, Jewel as policy does not make wedding cakes as we expect wedding cakes to be made. However, this Jewel DOES make cupcakes, and decorated cakes in various sizes. That said, I went to no less than 10 bakeries on a 2 month notice for a relative's wedding, looking specifically for a large quantity of cupcakes and an 8-inch, 2 layer cake, simply decorated, white-on-white frosting from a picture. Every single bakery gave me grief, from not enough notice (2 whole months to make cupcakes!), to trying to sell me a wedding cake my relatives didn't want. Then I went to this Jewel's bakery. They did not say no. They did not get upset over the quantity of cupcakes. They didn't complain about the amount of time. I got exactly what the bride wanted. The cake and frosting was great (I sneaked a taste, paid for it dearly, but it was so worth it). It was a lot less than the bakeries wanted to charge me. Jewel, the one on Lewis Ave. anyway, can indeed accommodate your special occasion, be it a corporate picnic, a school function, a family reunion, or even a wedding- provided you're not looking for a traditional tiered wedding cake. it will be cost-effective, and the results will be marvelous! read more

Watch the prices that scan on check out!!! I consistently purchase "sale" items only to find on check out that the full price rings up. Today on two items it made a difference of $6, and I didn't notice until I got home. Happens too regularly for it to be an innocent mistake. Last week I purchased ground sirloin and strawberries...both bad the next day. Done with you ripping off your customers, Jewel. Better prices and value at Aldi. Woodmans is further away but better prices, value and no tax on groceries. read more

When you go to a Starbucks or Target in any neighborhood, including Waukegan, you can expect the same product, service and atmosphere. Definitely not the same case with Jewel. Shame on you CEO of Jewel, for allowing such a discrepancy at your stores. It is clear that the produce, flowers, and other products at the Waukegan Jewel compared to the Lake Forest Jewel are below par. The sushi at Jewel in Lake Forest and the fresh squeezed orange juice are (and I mean it!) some of the best in Chicago! It is so obvious that the same products are not being delivered to their stores. I find it very hard to believe that with how inexpensive the fresh squeezed OJ offered at Lake Forest is, it would not sell in Waukegan. Maybe not the sushi, but educating the public would probably change their minds. An employee at this store and I had an in depth conversation about the lack of quality in Waukegan compared to Lake Forest and he was confident that this occurs because of the neighborhood this particular Jewel is located in. This gentleman even encouraged me to inform Jewel's corporate offices. Low income should not mean less deserving! read more

This Jewel is a little closer to my home so I go for convenience-never again.I went around 10am on a Friday morning to fill a prescription.Firstly,they did not have the meds I needed and so a young pharmacy intern tried to convince me to buy some over the counter stuff and just double the dose.It clearly stated on the box not to take more than the recommended dosage.Then I went to do some grocery shopping and needed help finding something as they have changed the store around.The young lady I asked for help advised me that items were listed on signs above the aisles and walked away(the item I was looking for was not listed).I had to walk half the store to find what I needed.Then they only had 1 lane open and self checkout was packed.The young lady ringing was so slow because she and the other young lady running the self checkout computer were too busy talking about how some old lady at the service desk smelled-we were right across from said desk so I'm sure she heard them.Finally,it was my turn to checkout.She told me to hold on a second because she was going on break.While I was standing there waiting for the other cashier to bring her drawer out she could have rung me up at least 3 times.The cashier who took over apologized for making me wait & was quick,but by that time I had had 1 bad experience too many in this store.I will shop at the one on Green Bay. read more
