Mmmmmmmmm historic.......mmmmmmm beautiful..........mmmmmmmm booky wallpaper.........mmmmmmmmmm tasty things............mmmmmmm customer service..........
If I were a cat I would be licking myself right now.
The Jews House Restaurant is frankly gorgeous, clinging to a steep street in Lincoln surrounded by antiques shops, boutiques and beauty. It's wonky, it's charming, it's a real pleasure to visit.
The customer service is exemplary. Friendly, warm and without any pretension. We're not talking cheap but it's no great expense, we dined on a two course lunch with a full bottle of wine for £55...seeing how easily one could drop £22.50 each in even the crappiest pub on a lunch with wine this price was quite astounding given the quality of the food we were eating.
Before our starters we were brought a charming bread dish with two types of fresh ciabatta served in a dinky hessian sack over a warming bag of cooking beads, the smell when the little treasure bag opened was divine. Little treats really make a meal special.
Adrian started with the Stilton Mousse, Waldorf Salad and Pickled Walnuts. It was smooth, nicely sharp and beautifully presented...all for a mere £6.50. I love me duckies so went for Potted Duck Rillette, Pear Chutney and Toasted Rye Bread- this time just over £7. The rillette melted in the mouth, the chutney was sweet and squishy with a little hint of decadent spice, and the rye bread added much needed texture and crunch. My only eenyweeny teenytiny complaint would be that, in with the playful theme, the rillette was served in a mini pickle jar. This looked cute and it was an ample serving but the narrow neck was annoying and I did a lot of dropping soft duck off my fork. It was a sweet idea for presentation but needed some more practical consideration- I didn't look especially elegant as I clanked around in a small jar for my meat.
For main I opted for a larger version of another starter, 36hr Pork Belly, Miso Glaze, Asian Slaw and Micro Coriander. It was just £10 and melted to rich, salty, sweetness on my palate. The pork fell apart at the slightest touch and the thai spices worked beautifully with the miso and coriander. Every mouthful was a pleasure and a decent portion again, considering this is not 'pub grub'.
Adrian had the heart stoppingly soft 48hr Short Rib of Beef, Sauteed Mushrooms, Caramelised Shallots with Red Wine and Parsnip Puree. Oh dear GOD. I admit I made doe eyes a LOT to steal mouthfuls from him. Luckily for me he is a gent. The beef was utter perfection, drenched in a rich and smooth red wine reduction, it exploded into warm red clouds on the tongue. The slight sweetness of the puree and little mild onions complimented the flavour perfectly. This was not a surprise or pretentious dish, it was just perfect meat cooked with exacting culinary science with well chosen complimentary flavours. Delicious.
As for the dining room, we were upstairs with the library wallpaper- so you can imagine my delight! It was a small room with an open fire that felt cosy and comfortable without being crowded. The staff were a pleasure, Ade accidentally got a bit of his wine spilt by the waitress but it was quickly dealt with in good humour. He was briefly missing a knife for the main course but again this arrived promptly. They were clearly busy but these were trifles. Our coats were taken, all our requests swiftly delivered upon, our glasses filled every time they got low, everything was just as I like it- polite but inobtrusive, service with a smile, the customer is king. Lovely.
I thoroughly recommend a day out in Lincoln. It's just about an hour and a half down the A1 and such a gorgeous, friendly and charming alternative to the showy, touristy resorts of York and Harrogate. We loved it so much we're planning a weekend away asap to better sample the delights.......watch this space : ) read more
