We really lucked out in finding Jill when we moved to the city a few months ago. We arrived with basically nothing and had no idea what to do with our new apartment. Interior design can be tricky - no matter how much you think you're on the same page with someone about aesthetic choices, ambiguous terms sneak in to describe an overall style that may differ from what you originally thought. This can be really great if you trust and enjoy the choices made by your designer, but could also go really sour if you were expecting something totally different than what you got. What I enjoyed most about Jill throughout the whole process was her willingness to make sure we wanted the same thing. She helped me design my bedroom by picking out a color palette, how to apply the palette across the room, textiles, and some major layout choices. She did a good job identifying a stylistic choice she thought would be good for the room, and then negotiating with me about specific application or addressing any concerns I had. Once I felt like she knew what I wanted, then she could use that as a starting point for describing why each choice would meet our collective aesthetic desires. When I started to rent my current home in the mission, it had green carpet that looked like a swamp puke cold and unflattering bathroom design, a garbage heap of a back yard and white paint on every wall. Apparently it was co-op before I took the lease over. This place was my dream home as far as location, size and price. I was disappointed that even though I got everything I wanted, the place was so horrible looking, it really wasn't comfortable for my guests. While searching for an interior designer, we came across Jill's site and loved what we saw. My partner and I have very different styles, and we both totally loved the design ideas displayed on her site. It just got better from there. We did not have a good experience with Jill. Reading over the previously posted reviews, I'm surprised to see adjectives like "fast" and "responsive." This does not describe how Jill handled our project -- among other issues. We contacted Jill about redoing a room in our house in early June, and were impressed with the creative direction she put forth at the beginning of the project. It unfortunately went downhill from there. Jill was consistently late to appointments, even showing up hungover (which she admitted) to one of them, and was often unresponsive over email for days. Not great when you're trying to make some quick decisions about furniture pieces. And certainly not professional. The last straw came after she recommended a painter (her husband) to us. He did a terrible job -- we'll literally have to repaint it all. We question why she would have recommended him to clients. We ultimately had to let Jill go and will finish the project ourselves. Very frustrating considering we've been working on the project for three months (not something I'd call "fast" by any means), and it's still unfinished. read more

I'm finishing my second project with her and couldn't be more delighted. I found Jill via Yelp a couple years ago. I had a deplorable bathroom in a Victorian I'd bought in Noe. I'd never worked with a designer before, and had no idea how the process worked. I also had no idea what I wanted the new bathroom to look like. She was very patient as we rolled through magazines to determine what I liked and did not. After an initial meeting she very quickly developed a couple plan options and presented finishes. She made it all so easy. During the actual work (which protracted, as those things do) she did a tremendous job pushing the contractor for me. The end result was exactly the bathroom I never knew I wanted. What I enjoyed most in that process was how Jill would guide me, but in the end, make certain that the design and finishes were what I wanted...and not necessarily what is popular or in vogue. I came out of the experience with a much greater understanding of my own tastes in finishes. I sold that house a few months later and moved into a modern highrise in South Beach which, with Jill's assistance, I've completely refurnished. For this job Jill introduced me to Pinterest. It is a godsend for this sort of work. Ok, so my husband and I moved into a new town home in Emeryville because we were preparing to have our first child. We had more space than ever before so my husband decided that the downstairs room would be his man room. His man room had many requirements; it needed to have space for his computer and DJ equipment, as well as a place for his drafting table, and a hangout area with a couch. Keep in mind that the room is not very large, probably 15 x 20 feet or so, yet Jill managed to design the space to fit all of my husbands demands. She was innovative in how she used the space and also offered many suggestions about what furniture would be most functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. I have been working with Jill for several months now and I have found her extraordinarily professional, creative, talented, collaborative, fast-moving, and am absolute joy to work with. We can't say enough good things about Jill! She demonstrated an uncanny knack of letting us describe our vision, while at the same time coaxing it out of us, because in some instances we didn't know exactly what we wanted. She was always very kind in guiding us back onto the right path when we struck off on our own and got a little lost, such as "I love that little frog (which we had placed as a centerpiece on our dresser), but maybe he would be better in the bathroom (in retrospect, my wife did not have to agree so forcefully, but oh well)." She has a seemingly infinite wealth of resources and was always able to find the exact piece we wanted, which was a challenge considering how small our space is (550 sq ft!) and everything had to be measured to the inch to fit just right. For example, we were stuck for weeks on what to put on the wall behind our bed, but Jill came through with an out-of-box suggestion - something she herself had been considering - and it was absolutely perfect. In the end, we have our beautiful home decorated in a lasting style. Her creativity was matched by her precision - she was ruthless in her measuring and everything was hung at the right height. And the bookshelves! We think that finding and arranging the perfect knick-knacks and Tchotchkes might be her special gift to humanity. Her handyman, Alex, was thorough and exact in his work painting and mounting shelves at an affordable price. Great guy, too! And Jill herself is one of the nicest people you will ever meet - energetic, thoughtful and responsive at all times. We may have gone a little over budget in our excitement, but that wasn't her fault - her accounting and billing were easy to understand and error-free. We were so happy with the result, we hired her back after our main project was completed to put the finishing touches on our kitchen, bathroom and foyer. If there is ever a time that we decide to change our decor (though that is almost impossible to imagine right now), Jill will be the first one we call. read more
