Good food. Nice ambience. Service was unpredictable. 2nd drink slow to appear. Had to ask for ordered salad. Our waitress was fine but I can't tell you her name because we were never presented with a check on which it may have appeared. No one told us we were supposed go to the counter to pay because a check would not coming to the table. We had the surf and turf steak and the veggie burger. Chowder was delicious. Prawn skewers were good too. Steak was tender and tasty. Burger was very good. Side salad nice with a light dressing. Strangely the restaurant policy is no substitution of salad or onion rings for fries. Non negotiable. Locked in to their computer system. Silly business decision from management to choose not to accommodate the paying customer. I guess they have never heard of up-charging for a more expensive side. read more

Food was incredibly tasty, although I have to agree that it takes them a long while to bring your order(s) to you. The waitress was nice especially when I told her that I was in a hurry and she, promptly, try to speed up that pace if bringue g the foods to us. We ordered a Veggie burger and a Chicken Burger. If I could give zero I would. Ordered a chicken sandwich with satay sauce. Waited over 20 minutes. Brought the sandwich with the wrong sauce and said they had switched sandwiches between tables and would get a new one. 30 plus minutes later and my husband was done with his ribs (which were mediocre at best) and still no sandwich. Asked to see the manager. Nothing. Went to the bar to see the manager and the woman said she was "kinda" the manager, listened to my issue and said "ok". Went back to the table for 10 more minutes then out of our sense of fairness went back to the bar and gave her $50nzd for the bottle of wine we did drink and got a "thanks!" Seriously, the worst example of tourist crap ever. Go to the tipsy oyster instead. They were amazing! read more

Went here for dinner on kings birthday weekend. The cons were that we were sat down right by the bar and entrance to the kitchen and toilets which wasnt nice and it was also right where all the staff stood at the bar waiting to see if they needed to attend tables so it felt uncomfortable to talk about much with my family. The waiter bought out our entrees at the same time as our mains which was annoying so be sure to specify you want them first. on a positive note our meals were nice, my husband and I got the steak and we really enjoyed the chowder that come with it. The kids menu was good and they gave coloring activities for the kids. The desserts were good with good size portions. We tried a selection of cocktails and most of them were ok but nothing to rave about. read more

I'm not sure how this place has more stars than two! We went eager to grub on some amazing ribs since it is known for that and were highly disappointed when a slab of "meat" was thrown on the table with some dry flavorless sauces placed on top.... we ordered a Caesar salad as well and all it was was soggy lettuce with a couple croutons on top! First I'll talk about the pros! Jimmy Jack's has a good amount of outdoor seating, which is fantastic on a beautiful day. Additionally, there is plenty of seating inside and they leave the front doors open, so the fresh breeze comes right in. I had a nice draft beer during my stop and I would say the prices were pretty on point for the beer. I also felt welcomed by friendly staff. Cons would be the food and prices. Being a rib shack, I expected some tasty grilled foods, but I was disappointed with what I tried amongst my friend's plates. My friends ordered a burger, curly fries, calamari, and BBQ chicken wings. The burger was standard and the fries were a bit disappointing. The calamari was thick and seemed fresh, but both myself and my friend thought it should have been crispy and cooked a little more. As for the chicken wings, that was the biggest disappointment. My mouth was watering, anticipating some nicely grilled or even smoked chicken wings covered in sauce. Sadly, the wings tasted sub-standard, chewy, not so fresh, and the sauce wasn't so great. I can only hope their ribs make better impressions based on the name of the restaurant. This was not BBQ it was cheap rib meat boiled until it was tender with no flavor and then smoked so they could say it was! Slow smoking on good equipment takes much longer. The thinkwho care's as long as the they get tourist that don't know good BBQ. read more

Food was not bad, however service was horrendous. We're visiting from the states so we're definitely aware that some things could be different...but this was ridiculous. In the time that we've been in New Zealand, not once have we had any issues. If anything, the staff have always been great. Here? Not so much. Not once were we checked on and we sat around for about 25-30 minutes after we were done eating waiting for the check. It was like the staff was playing who could keep eye contact away from the patrons the longest. When we finally got the check, the waiter walked away before we could ask anything or even hand him our credit card (I already had it in my hand). It was another 15 minutes before we were able to get his attention again and he told us that you pay at the bar. WTF???? Obviously we are not from around town (lack of accent or maybe having an accent to New Zealanders), and it would have been nice to be told to pay elsewhere instead of having us sit around for more than half an hour just to pay. I mean, if you don't want my money, that's ok too. Severely disappointed in this establishment's service. It's a good thing we won't be at this location for that long, we definitely won't be coming back here. 2 hours of our time wasted on this place. read more

The best fall-off-the-bone ribs so far. I've tasted a lot of ribs in New Zealand, but this is one of the best. Super flavourful, huge serving, prompt and friendly service and priced just right. Especially in this tourist town where food can get a little bit expensive, this ribs place is truly a bargain. When we stopped there, they even had an on-going promo for Sundae Sundays and we got a free one. Make sure you leave for dessert and get their cinnamon donuts -- oh so heavenly! If you're fond of those mini donuts you often only find at fairs, it's a lot like that but with two huge portions. Melts in your mouth and is sure to make you happy. read more

Good for lunch or dinner, but the best is if you are there with a group - the premium rib platter is amazing! Something for everyone, but the ribs are the highlight- so tender and juicy. Big shout out to this place! While on a cruise, we stopped here for lunch. We ordered the appetizer of Calamari. WOW! We get fresh seafood in the San Francisco Bay Area on a regular basis and this dish exceeded our expectations! Cooked to perfection, tender and it melted in our mouths. For lunch I ordered the Fish N' Chips because I didn't want ribs. Another WOW! Fish was crunchy on the outside and tender and flaky on the inside. NOT greasy either! Great restaurants in the Bay of Islands. It is probably the busiest dining place during the summer months. Great food. I have found it best to go in a group and order the premium platter.
