While the entry price of almost five dollars is reasonable if you plan on spending the afternoon relaxing, with "squad", children running amuck, lanes taken up by those who swim for fitness, I found it difficult to dive in without hitting someone. This public pool has gone from being a calm and austere public amenity to a cluttered coffee shop cum water park cum meeting place for the middle class. At times it seems as if Brisbane's fetish for sipping coffee and eating muffins is the sole reason people turn up to the place, especially when they have children in tow. There are pools dotted about Brisbane that aren't overcrowded and aren't quasi coffee shops. While I understand that those who run Yeronga Park Pool are business savvy while also hoping building a community feel, I think these factors need to be reduced within the complex to remind people what a public pool is there for. You should be able to swim without fear of being in the wrong lane, or that you'll drown someone who's decided to sip their latte while floating in the small area of water dedicated to the 'receational' swimmer.

The staff behind the front counter are always friendly, and the food served from the canteen (designed to look like a straw hut on a tropical island) is actually quite nice, if you wish to eat lunch there. I guess my only complaint would be that sometimes school groups or senior clubs like to crowd into the venue, causing staff to have to ask the rest of us to move on or find another section to swim in. I'm ok with sharing and letting everybody have a go of course. But sometimes the timing is bad. You just get in and then get told to move elsewhere. Hey - How about THEY move to another section? I paid money to be here too! I guess the reason is because the groups have pre-booked certain lanes, etc. I get it. And good on the staff at Yeronga pool too, because this is clearly a thriving business. Very popular and fun for everyone. Especially during the scorching Summer months. I don't have a pool of my own, so I enjoy visiting this local community pool.

At Langlands they have a full 50 meter Olympic size pool that is cordoned off with lanes providing place to do laps or to just laze around in the water without getting into any ones way. The pool is also in expensive so any one can go down as it costs just $4.60 for an entire day. If you are a student or have a concession card the price goes down to only $4. If you plan to go and get in some exercise and do a few laps of the pool I would suggest going before school closes for the day because after that it can get quite busy and the lanes do get taken up quite quickly. This is the same story during the weekend because they cater quite well for families and provide a play area and water slide for the kids. You can become a member and get swimming lessons too if that takes your fancy. The pool is open from 5 am till 7 pm during the week and from 6 am to 6 pm during the weekend. If you would like to make this a yearlong activity fear not because the pool is cooled or heated according to the season and temperature.

In the five or so years since I was last a member it seems they've scrubbed up and pulled their socks up. You can have as much or as little guidance as you like and classes like boxing, body balance (a lot of Les Mills) and more should keep boredom at bay.

Having never braved a personal training session of fear I may in fact hyperventilate, pass out, or worse, embarrass myself in front of the muscley trainers, there are plenty of them, and friends rave about how good their sessions are. Good for them. Personally, I'm a massive fan of gym classes - the RPM instructors are packed with ridiculous amounts of energy, and motivate you to the point where you think your lungs are actually going to explode out of your chest. They introduce themselves to each individual rider every session - and if you're a regular, watch out because they will shout out your name if you aren't keeping up! Despite being an Australia-wide chain, this particular Fitness First really adds a personal touch to their operations, and as a result, is always buzzing with fitness freaks and health-seekers. They also offer a child-minding service, complete with a large playroom which is supervised by the staff.

Most recently I had a day off, and it was one of only two council pools on the northside that was open. They drain, clean, and do whatever maintenance they need over winter, so that's understandable. Centenary had just reopened. As much as it was a warm (24 degrees) winter day, I was still worried the pool might be a bit chilly, but I needn't have worried. The temperature was perfect. But this pool isn't for splashing around in with your friends, each lane was roped up and segregated based on swim speed (i'm always in the slow lane!). It was fairly quiet, but still expect to share a lane with one or two others even when it's not busy. As I left what appeared to be a school swim team was arriving and taking a lot of lanes, so it might be a good idea to check when the pool is booked out for groups. There was plenty of bench space, toilets and showers in the change rooms, but unfortunately the lockers (and there's not many) were out of order, so avoid bringing any valuables. Staff at the counter were friendly, and they have a good range of goggles and other swimming paraphernalia, so you can probably grab whatever you need right there if you don't have any gear, or just forgot it. There's also plenty of parking, with a gym above the pool!

The lanes are split according to the speed at which you're swimming, and the people I've shared lanes with all keep to themselves and don't kick up a fuss when someone is swimming too quickly or too slowly. The change rooms are air conditioned because they aren't well ventilated for privacy reasons, but this makes them incredibly cold when you hop out of the pool. Luckily, their showers are always piping hot. The pool is heated in winter, but there are still those odd summer days that are inexplicably freezing, and this turns the water ice cold. It takes about ten laps to warm up.

Also the holes "the actual one" on the green needed better workmanship to be done. Prune the edges please. I hoped that cart girl made more rounds selling drinks and food. As she only appeared once. Afterwards retreating to the bar next to the club house makes it convenient to get food and beverage to boast and downplay about your round.

Along with my two golfing companions (who are much better than I am; one boasts a handicap of 8) we trudged along St Lucia's tight fairways. Importantly, the fairways are extremely well-kept. The tightness of the fairways however means the courses are harder than some other Brisbane golf links (for example, Victoria Park Golf Course). After the first few holes and two thrown golf clubs later, I retired to the golf buggy and watched my companions play instead. It gave me ample time to absorb the entire links. The courses really are beautiful, snaking around the Brisbane river. The close location to the University of Queensland means St Lucia Golf is visited by pro-golfers and students alike. I would expect most of the students here have more change in their wallets than average, however, as we all know golfing is not cheap. However, it's no more expensive here than at Brisbane's other links. St Lucia Golf also boasts a very flashy clubhouse, which reminded me of a bar/restaurant in terms of dining facilities. Though the Link's website is clear on opening and closing hours regarding the clubhouse, actual play time seemed to be informally designated as from dawn to dusk.

I signed on because I discovered that it's a small business and the owner Bruce is passionate about creating a space where people feel comfortable working out and the service is personal and real. So far I can attest to that being our experience so he's living up to his mantra. The gym is new and as such so is all the equipment. Separate bathrooms exist for both females and males. This is a gym for independent exercisers with no group fitness, but they do have a couple of personal trainers if you're keen and their rates are really reasonable. Make sure you as Bruce about the starters specials. I'm yet to experience a lineup for machines even though I've been visiting peak hour 5pm-7pm Mon-Fri so a part of me doesn't want to tell you that this is a great little gym worth making the effort to support but that wouldn't be fair to the guys behind it working hard to create a great concept.
