In the morning you'll see hoards of commuters cutting through the Hills Club and the park to get to their bus stop. At the same time nearby Vision Personal Training seems to hold mass PT classes. They seem to take over the park so its always interesting dodging the participants to get to through. In the middle of the day its quiet and then come afternoon its usually filled with kids and families all hanging around the play equipment waiting for their loved ones to get off the bus again after work. Interestingly this used to be part of the railway line that ran from Parramatta to Baulkham Hills. Part of the cutting is still visible, the old station masters building is still standing, and the street behind the park is still called Railway St. Bit of a shame they ripped out the line but the park is still great!

Then there are small rooms around the perimeter - a beauty salon, a grocery store, a fire station, a TV station, a gym, a police station, and more. Some are open all the time; some only for brief periods with supervision. The doctors office even has a waiting room, an examination room, and a nursery. Every so often they do something special on the stage that draws most of the kids together. Plus a cafe that serves both drinks and a few food items, like fish and chips. A grandmom and grandpa's heaven for three hours of running by our two year old granddaughter.

The other amazing thing about this park is that only in a Australia would you put a cricket pitch in such an awesome location. Seems almost a waste. Though... if you are looking for the ultimate place to fly a kite in Sydney.... this is likely to be it. Another big plus about this park, especially if you have kids, is the enclosed play area (near the toilets), which also has a BBQ ready and waiting. Just across the Spit and 10 mins from Manly, Tania sits perched precipitously atop a bushy tabletop headland looking over Sydney Harbour and out through the heads into open ocean (and the pirate's law that I'm led to believe is in force in international waters). I watched Jessica Watson sail her yacht The Pink Lady back into Sydney after her record-breaking round-the-world solo voyage as a sprightly 16 year old from here, one of the highlights of 2010. It is always a crowd pleaser. Heaps of food stalls, arts and craft, and shows for the kids makes the day pass pretty quick. This year my boys enjoyed the Sponge Bob Square Pants show the best. While the $5 entrance fee (per car) on the day of the festival is a donation, I believe on any other day the park entrance will still cost you $5. Though for a picnic area this huge, with ponds and bridges, play areas and sand pits, gardens and paths... you will not lack for things to check out. It even has BBQ facilities. You might even want to bring along the push bikes for the kids and let them ride around. Certainly worth checking out if you are in the area.

With onsite picnic facilities, including undercover tables, as well as an electric bbq, this is a great venue. My boys of course love the playground. It is much the same as many of the new areas with the primary coloured climbing gyms, but hey... no need to fix what ain't broke. So next time you see a bit of blue sky, drag the kids out and get them to run laps or something... :-)

Since 1991, Dunbar Rovers (named after a Paddington Hotel) have been one of the most successful…read moreteams in the Eastern Suburbs Football (Soccer) league. Having started off with one team, there are now 15 plying their trade at various levels, including over 35s and over 45s teams as well as 2 women's teams. Trials are held at the beginning of each year, usually around the middle of January, for all of the teams - but if you want to be considered the Premier League team, you'll need to be pretty decent (there are a few semi-pro, former pros wandering this league)! Trials usually attract pretty big numbers, so don't be too despondent if you don't make it into the team you were going for. The various levels do cover most abilities though, so there's a good variety of players. The season cover the autumn/winter months with games for the Premier League and PL Reserve teams taking place on a Saturday, while all other games are played on Sunday - which can be unpleasant following a big Saturday night! The home ground is technically the Reg Bartley Oval in Rushcutters Bay, but games take place at plenty of fields all over the Eastern Suburbs, so you may have to travel but it's never too far.
