I needed to get my mom a cake the day of her birthday, and I remembered trying a JJ Bakery cake at a work event and loving it. I looked at the available cakes behind the glass, and even though all of them looked delicious, I asked the cashier for her recommendation. She recommended the 8" Chocolate Square cake for $27, which is chocolate cake with chocolate cream. You would think that's too chocolately, but omg this cake is great! The cakes overall aren't too sweet-- they are still very flavorful! The fruit on top was also fresh. I think 85 degree cakes are a few dollars more and don't have this quality. My mom has been coming to this bakery for years! She has her fave items that she makes a long drive for- curry meat pies and coconut buns. That' s what we picked up today- although gotta come early for the curry meat pies, they run out fast! Only 3 left when we came at 1030 am on a weekday. It's a fun place- pastries, savory and sweet, are prepackaged and labeled, pick up and place on tray to take to cashier when ready to purchased. I also picked up a fabulous chocolate cake. For my birthday, my aunt brought me the Hokkaido chiffon cake, the strawberry mochi, and the mango mochi. O.M.G. Just go get these items and thank me later. Light, creamy, not too sweet (ok this describes every Asian bakery item but trust me, these items still stand out amongst the rest) I thought I would like the mango more than the strawberry but the strawberry mochi is where it's at. Not a place I would go again. Lady was rude and pastries tasted so so. The cake was cute but was dey and lacked flavor. Others lacked flavor to. Per your reply back when I say lack of flavor I definitely don't mean that it needs to be sweet to be flavorful. Lack of flavor means when you say its strawberry cake it should taste like strawberry. And the matcha cake was very dry. Also the lady was very rude and wasn't welcoming. I personally don't like overly sweet treats. There are many places that make very delicious desserts that have flavor and aren't overly sweet. I don't think you understood what I meant by lack of flavor lol. read more

JJ Bakery did it again! This is our second time stopping by JJ Bakery and everything was fresh, delicious and fantastic. We usually stop by JJ on our way to our friend's house in Palo Verdes. Everyone is always super friendly there and they always have our favorites. The bakeries are very reasonably priced all around $2 - $2.50 and for 8 pieces it was only around $18. Hubby wanted for his birthday, of all things, a Black Forest Cake. JJ makes one of few in this town, and they do a great job with chocolate sponge layers and light cream frosting. What they don't do well is spelling, as my husband "Juftif" can attest. His name is JUSTIN and I spelled it three times. Their interpretation is impressive. We had a good laugh and enjoyed the cake, but I can see where this could ruin a child's birthday so be sure to check whatever cake you pick up. I also tried a variety of pastries, and every single one tasted like they'd been sitting out for days. The "Special Bread" was very doughy, and the Pineapple Bun was okay, but the Egg Custard Tart was deep-dish and delicious. The Matcha Croissant was fine, but the Earl Grey Croissant tasted like a mouthful of scallion which is very concerning if you have allergies. Fortunately, I do not. I really wanted to give them a better rating, but my experience was honestly not great. The service is stellar, the people are lovely, but I just couldn't condone the quality of the food. read more

Quick grab and go. Visited around 6pm on a Friday, and this place was pretty well stocked, considering it's a bakery. I like their selections here, there's plenty of sweet and savory options, and their cakes look pretty amazing (I didn't get any). The place is clean and the parking is plentiful. Staff was friendly and prompt. My friend and I both enjoyed the flavors of the breads but we do have to mention that the matcha croissant and earl grey croissant tasted the same LOL also, by the time we ate the breads, the breads were a little stale (I assume it was baked in the morning) so would recommend coming in the morning when freshly baked. read more

It's been a long time since we'd been here, but we got a craving for strawberry mochi, so, we stopped by. There were the old favorites along with new additions. We went with the tried and true strawberry mochi, the creme brulee, and a creamy custard served in a tiny milk bottle. We had high hopes for the creme brulee, but sadly, it was the worst we'd ever had. Inside was pasty and not creamy at all. There was also zero crunch from the shell on top. The mochi was good, but it contained the tiniest piece of strawberry we'd ever seen. The best out of the bunch was the custard. As mentioned, it came in the cutest little milk bottle, and was absolutely delicious. It was light and creamy, with the right sweetness. Otherwise, the prices had gone up considerably. I would say the overall experience was less satisfying than before the pandemic. Stop by if you're nearby, but don't expect anything life changing. read more

Yes they do take food orders (call 3 days in advance) -- stewed bamboo shoots $11, stewed minced pork $16, stewed pork belly $13, beef stew $16 -- all prepared in the authentic Taiwanese flavors. They don't actually make them in-house but are made-to-order at another JJ location in the 626/San Gabriel area and delivered to Torrance in 3 days. I ordered the bamboo shoots and minced pork and they tasted heavenly and totally addictive with white rice!! This surprise find somewhat makes up for a dearth of authentic Taiwanese foods in the South Bay. read more

I hate to be this person but just spreading the word for food safety and so no one else makes this mistake. I went in today around 5:00pm. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The woman working the front is very kind and everything seemed clean/nice so that was not an issue and is the reason I did 2 stars instead of none.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I purchased a pork pastry. I know I came later in the day, however I was under the impression they must put out fresh pastries throughout the day since meat cannot sit out at room temp the whole day. The pork bun was completely soggy at the bottom and the pork looked soggy as well. I decided to try and eat it anyway, but the taste was terrible. It tasted like it had been sitting the entire day and after eating about half, I had to stop because I was questioning food safety at that point. For the bread to get as wet and broken down as it was, the pastry had likely been there for quite a while. Waiting and hoping I don't get sick from eating it, but I do not recommend coming later in the day for these pastries. Or stick to their sweet stuff. read more

I shop here frequently and am SO disappointed in their service today. I purchased 6 breads and the cashier rang me up for 5 of the, which I had already paid with credit card (5$ minimum). She realized and tried to charge me for the last bread, which cost 3$, and I was willing to pay for this but did not have any cash. However, they were unwilling to let me pay card for it since it didn't reach the 5$ minimum. I asked them that since it wasn't my fault for this error, could I just pay with card even though it is under 5$? The cashier asked the manager in the back and said no. SOOOO I returned the bread. TERRIBLE. The worst part is they asked me to buy one more thing to reach the 5$ minimum. WHY would you ask the customer to do this when YOU'RE at fault? read more

Our new go to bakery when it comes to cakes and desserts. The other bakery, we can tell that the cakes have been baked and frozen for awhile but their breads and cakes are so delicious. Could be that they're pre-made frozen or could be made fresh too coz compare to other known bakeries, theirs taste much better. This is one of my fave, the Passion fruit cake. Have had 85 degrees in Taiwan and here in L.A. JJ Bakery reminds me more of the local bakery shops I went to as a child in Taiwan. I like how you can also get other Taiwanese snacks to go. 1. Pineapple bun with filling: Favorite as a child. Definitely would get the one with the filling. 2. Garlic bread: take this home and put it in your oven. Comes out crunchy and so good 3. Moon cakes: seasonal; I love how you can get mini sizes so you can try the different flavors and also to not eat too much of it. 4. Pineapple cake: tastes similar to most places. I think the one at 85 degrees and I Fu Tang in Monterey Park has more pineapple filling 5. Pork floss bun: the 85 degree for some reason always taste too oily. Get it here instead. 6. Pork steak bun: these are pretty good. Usually I'll buy a few and store in freezer. Easy to warm up in microwave 7. Chinese tamale: have tried this at a few places in Monterey Park but this one tastes best. Like how my grandma used to make it. 8. Coffee roll: Would get this every so often. Not too much cream. Tastes like a tiramisu. 9. Mantou: Forgot the english name but it's a white steamed bun. I reheat with a damp paper towel in the microwave. Lightly sweet. Makes for a good snack. 10. Hot dog bread: They have different kinds. Some have onion and others are slightly more bready. Still good and comparable to other places. 11. Peanut and soy milk: Typical Taiwanese morning tree. I think Huge Tree Pastry in Monterey Park might be slightly better. Side note: The JJ Bakery in Monterey Park has more cooked items like bentos and the Chinese donut (yo tiao) tastes the closest to the ones you can get off the streets in Taiwan for breakfast. read more

Made sure to stop by before heading back to Vegas and they had way less pastry options than in the past. At first I was at least happy because they had the strawberry cake mochi. I ordered 3 to take home. Sadly when I pulled one out on the drive back I soon realized they made them totally different. The mochi outside was thicker than it used to be. The cream filling on the inside used to be the yummiest whipped cream, but it tasted like it turned or they added some cheese component and it was different texture. The cake was at the bottom instead of cut up in peices and on the inside which made it dry. I threw out the rest I disliked it so much. Super bummed. read more

Long time customer, 15 or so years. Came to order a black forest cake for my wedding anniversary. My wife likes strawberries. The black forest cake comes decorated with cherries on top. I requested strawberries instead. The young man at the counter said it comes only with cherries but he would go ask if it could be done. (I think it would be as simple as replacing the cherries with strawberries and charge extra for different fruit if needed) the young man returned and said that it can't be done! Really!. I understand that this is a bakery that is not a specialty cake store but, REALLY? I left to look for another bakery that could do this simple request. Very disappointed since I am a long time customer who only buys cakes from this establishment since their cakes are not a diabetic bomb. This happened a few years ago when I went to buy some egg tart from this bakery. The store manager was so mean she refused to give me a box for the egg tart. I then bought additional egg tarts in order to get the box. She then got mad and threw my change on the table rudely. There is no reason I should be treated like that. I know someone who worked there told me they were required to lie to the customers that all the bread were fresh even though some of them were a few days old. I would never go there again! read more

Upon entering the store, an older lady came to me and directed me to the hand sanitizer. She also gave me a glove to pick the pastries. So wonderful. This should be the standard and I wish all stores were like this right now. Got a variety of stuff but I do LOVE their egg tarts. Their matcha croissant is just all right and not strong in matcha taste but I'm still into it. One thing I was sad about- they didn't have boba nor their delicious milk tea for sale today. However, the good news is that there's a boba time right next door. I was falling asleep and dreading the drive back home so I got my mom and I their coffee milk tea also known as the duet with boba. If you haven't tried it, you can't go wrong. With JJ offering 20 percent off today, why not? If you haven't tried their mochis, you must try at least once. So this place was pretty good. I was craving sweets for a while and i lagged on that so i ended up binging and well everything we tried, and we tried a lot, was reallyyyy good. We had a marble cake a cranberry roll a french late slice of cake a cappucino one. An almond tart, german pudding and some ither stuff lol. And i was worried i had jumped the gun because i have never been here so i wasnt sure if what i bought was going to be good but everything was really good. We have bought bread from JJ Bakery for many years. The last time we bought bread, there was a hair on the bottom of the bread. It was gross When I contacted JJ Bakery about this issue, they completely ignored my complaint. They don't seem to care about sanitary conditions in the bakery if they won't even respond to an employees hair being stuck on the bread.
