I just tried this place out for the first time the other day, and I liked it quite a bit. If you're into burgers and beer, this place fits the bill. It was nice that they had a big beer selection, but that's pretty much par for the course these days (at least in Minneapolis). I was happy to try a chocolately dark beer by Heist Brewing of Brookings, SD, though. That was a cool local offering. I had the Rajun Cajun burger, which was phenomenally tasty, with pepper jack and grilled onions and a great toasted bun. The fries were just OK; I got the jalapeno cheddar ones and they just had some kind of seasoning thrown on them with a slightly funky taste. JL Beers is a tiny place that's seemingly always packed, so you may have to sit alongside strangers or wait a bit but they are very efficient at turning tables. Everything is cooked up to order behind the bar, and food comes out quickly. One thing I disliked immensely is that I ordered a glass of water and was brought a bottle of their JL Beers-branded water, for which they charged me $1.50. First off, the bottling of water is clearly bad for the environment as they create needless waste with this process. Secondly, NO PLACE IN THE UNITED STATES should charge people for water. EVER. They really need to take a look at that, promptly. Otherwise the experience here was quite good. It would've been more special if it was a truly local joint, however. This is my first time in Sioux Falls and after reading the reviews about this place, I decided to give it a try. First I want to start off by saying this place was amazing! They had great food and the atmosphere was perfect for an after work spot. They had an extensive menu of beer selections which I loved. Now let's to get to the food. I ordered the Great American Cheeseburger with the loaded chips and was not disappointed! The burger was juicy and had the perfect amount of flavor to it! The chips though....OMG! I couldn't stop eating those. I paired them up with one of the Beertarts for the perfect combination. The reason I gave this review four stars was because of the service. Solid place for a good time with friends. REALLY great burgers. So much so we ate here two nights in a row while in town. I highly recommend the chops with seasoning. Classic beer and burger place!! What separates them (in my opinion) is their fresh kettle chips, your pick of flavor and dip. I had the BBQ with the French dip and dang it was good. This place basically just has burgers and beer. The burgers are pretty good. However, you have to PAY for water!?!?! My husband and I were about to walk out (him not being a drinker and me being pregnant) when our waiter stopped us and gave us a bottle of complimentary water. I felt restricted and like I could only have the one bottle of water instead of my usual 5 glasses. I'm really not down with this -no water- thing. The french fries were disgusting. You were supposed to get chips with your burgers; I ordered fries and my husband didn't. Neither of us got chips and they gave us this horrible, soggy/raw half a handful of fries. My boyfriend prefaced this place as having a trailer exterior with high-end interiors, and he was right. The place doesn't look like much, but the food tastes really good. No points on presentation, but they make up for it in other areas. I stopped in here with my boyfriend for a late lunch one day and ordered a pomegranate beer (by suggestion from the bartender), he got some dark stout thing. I liked how they took the time to match you up with the best beer for your preferences, rather than letting the experience turn into Russian Roulette. You can get unlimited samples before committing, but we found the samples didn't taste the same. The whole glass felt like an entirely different brew than the small glass. I also noticed the beer prices were really high, and I wonder if it's to cover the costs of the unlimited samples... I also didn't like the nametag thing; seemed kinda creepy! For food, we ordered loaded fries while deciding on which burger to get. They were pretty good, and the portions weren't outrageous. I ended up getting a slaw burger that was pretty good! The presentation isn't much: comes out on a piece of wax paper on a tray, and just looks like a regular old hamburger. However, the details are in the taste buds. That's where I found their passion for burgers. My boyfriend had a blue cheese BLT and really liked it. It was suggested to him by someone else sitting at the bar. We also split an order of potato chips (just sea salt) that were pretty good. Their chips are house-made and really fluffy. And tasted great when dipped in ketchup! Although we ate a lot, I still felt like it took a lot of food to fill us up. Way more than I anticipated. My major gripe for why I can't give them more than 3 stars: no complimentary water! You have to pay for bottled! I can't remember the last time I saw that in a restaurant, and it was a huge turnoff for me. We came here on our way out west and needed some lunch. Food is good. They have good beer and many different types of burgers. A couple things were kind of ridiculous though. I've had a chance to eat at JL Beers at least 5 times now. I'm definitely a fan. First off, lets focus on the two things they do best: Beer and Burgers. They have one of the largest tap selections in Sioux Falls, if not the largest. They have a great offering of various micro brews that are often hard to find in Sioux Falls, such as Widmer, Abita, Goose Island, etc. The pricing for beer is about right. Outside of JL Beers the only other place where you will get options like this in Sioux Falls is at Monk's. For their burgers they have a good selection of options. The burgers are great! I suggest trying the Humpty Dumpty Burger. The beef rivals Fuddruckers as the best burgers in town. The one knock I have is the wait. The restaurant only has room for 47, but that is the franchise model and that's how all of the locations are set up. This is a great place to grab a meal or even just a beverage. I went to JL earlier this evening to have dinner with a friend. She didn't have her ID so we couldn't stay. I didn't know you needed an ID even if you aren't drinking. We ordered two great American cheeseburgers to go with fries and root beers. I am not sure what's different about the burgers, but they are amazing!! I can't quite put my finger on it, but I definitely want to return. The fries were too salty and a little soggy. The root beer was way too sweet. Me and my fiancé stopped in for a beer and burger and the service was HORRIBLE. We sat at the bar and our bartender right off the bat had a very sour attitude. I believe his name was izah? Izak? As I ordered my beer, he turned his back at my fiancé as he was also ordering his beer. Then rolled his eyes when my fiancé repeated his beer order. We let it go but then had to ASK to order as our bartender was talking to his co worker about how he didn't like the day and wasn't having fun and wanted the day to be over. Don't get me wrong. Everyone has bad days but he honestly made the experience horrible. The perfect ending to our experience was when my fiancé payed and I usually tip (that's how we dine out, he pays I tip) as I wrote cash on the credit card receipt, our bartender said to his co worker "oh great she wrote cash on the slip but hasn't tipped" "greaat" as I was grabbing my wallet to tip. The first time I went to this place, my fries were over seasoned, it was like eating a salt lick. Also they didn't charge me for my meal until two weeks after I had eaten it, which caused complications. The second time, I ordered light seasoning on the fries and they were great, but they forgot to add bacon or mayonnaise to my burger, which is what I ordered. The manager comped my burger but was a jerk about the delayed billing. Last night I went there and ordered light seasoning on my fries and the same type of burger and it was made perfectly to order. Everything was perfect. Being a new restaurant, I am sure it took them some time to get the flow of things worked out, hopefully things stay that way.
