We walked in and it took a minute to be greeted, which is fine. I understand places get busy. We were eventually told to have a seat wherever we liked. After sitting down, I noticed paper menus sitting on the counter, so I walked over to grab them. The lady at the register, who later claimed to be the manager after I asked to speak to one, said, "I will bring them to you." Also fine. I simply went back to our booth and waited. When she came over, instead of saying hello or introducing herself, her first words were, "You need to practice a little patience." That immediately put my service radar on high alert. There was no attitude from us, no complaints, we had simply walked over to grab menus. The comment was unnecessary and unprofessional. She then asked what we wanted to drink. I calmly asked, "Can you wipe the table down?" Her response: "It is." I replied, "It is not there are spots on the table." She then pointed at the table and said, "These are imperfections." I know the difference between imperfections in a surface and spots that can be wiped clean. The table clearly had residue on it. Rather than simply wiping it down, she chose to argue. At that point, I told my husband, "Let's just leave." The entire interaction felt dismissive, defensive, and rude. When I asked to speak to a manager, she claimed she was the manager. I let her know directly that her tone and behavior were inappropriate, and we left. Customer service is about making guests feel welcome. This felt the exact opposite. I should have trusted the 3.7-star rating, but I gave the benefit of the doubt. That was a mistake. Do not waste your time or money here. read more

Jo Jo can make a meeeean breakfast, that's for sure. I went to this place looking for a diner-style breakfast with a side of charm, and that's what was served up. My grandpa lives about two minutes away, so it's an easy place for us to meet for breakfast since he doesn't have to drive too far. My mom and sister joined in this time as well, and I was happy to see we could get a table right away. This place is extremely tiny... about 7-8 tables... so go early! The atmosphere is a tad chaotic due to a tiny staff, but I actually enjoyed watching everything that was going on around me. Coffee was served up right away, and while it wasn't the best I've ever had, it was enough to kick-start my day. The menu has all of the classics on it, and I decided to go with two eggs over a medium, hash browns, and a side of sausage. My mom also ordered pancakes for all of us to share, for which I was so thankful... especially when blueberry syrup was brought over. Everything tasted fresh and just like grandma makes, and there wasn't a clean plate left on the table. The best part was when our server told us she brought the hot sauce we were using from home since she had extra. Jo Jo's Diner is located along Howdershell and is fairly easy to find even if you don't know the area very well. I work about 5 minutes away and stumbled upon this little diner when we wanted to try something different for a Saturday work-lunch. No one greeted us as we arrived. We seated ourselves as there were no signs that says otherwise and a server came over with some menu she took from another table she just finished taking the order from. We ordered some unsweetened iced tea and she brought them out shortly after. She came back a third time to the table to take the orders. I wanted some lunch. I was fairly hungry from a busy morning at work so I decided to start with a salad to hold me over but that was wishful thinking. My salad did not arrive early. In fact, we waited for a good 20-30 minutes before my salad came. So, the side salad came in a small plate with lettuce, chopped onions, peppers, tomatoes and some cheese. Nothing special and hardly worth the additional $3.50 that she pre-warned me about. I wouldn't have mentioned this little tidbit but honestly, for the cheap food prices they have an upcharge of $3.50 for a tiny salad is a bit on the steep side. I ordered some fried catfish with fries. The fries were actually delicious and so were the catfish. The price was just roughly over $5, too! I was sad that they only had these small packets of hot sauce and they weren't very good or you could go for some sriracha sauce (but they don't go as well on fish as proper, good hot sauce). So the food was cheap but it did take a very long time to get our meal. We got in around 11 and didn't get our food until close to noon. By then, I was severely hungry and wished we had gone somewhere else. My dining partner ordered some breakfast fare with toast, scrambled eggs, potatoes and some sausage links. They were pretty busy, yes but most of the people there ordered breakfast food which to me, is the easiest and fastest meal to prepare. And yes, I do cook quite a bit... not to feed an army but enough to know how long it takes to prepare some things. This place is also not the cleanest of places but the table service was fine. Would I come back? I wouldn't go out of my way to do so and certainly not if I was hungry enough to not want to wait for an hour for my food but I might find my way back here again in the future. read more

So after reading an article on stltoday.com yesterday & as I'm always looking for good breakfast places I saw Jo Jo's as one of the top diners in St. Louis. So this Saturday morning a buddy of mine & I decided to try it. Well I was totally impressed. The service was spot on & then the food was outstanding. They even have grits which you can't get up in these northern parts of the US although I am a St. Louis boy. Even though I wasn't worried about the bill because I was totally satisfied but it was pretty inexpensive with all the food we ordered. The bottom line is that our family will not be returning. We had previously dined at JoJo's before our recent visit and was impressed by the only waitress working that seemed to know everyone by name. She kept our drinks full and was very personable. She wasn't there at our last visit. This time the food was average at best and smaller portions than before. Service was almost non-existent, but we gave them a pass as there was only 1 person working. One other table besides us had people dining, otherwise the place was empty. It could have been cleaner. We initially felt like we were a bother to even be coming in to sit down and eat, but we stayed. Food came out fast, but we never had any refills and after waiting more than 20 minutes for our check, we got up and asked for it. The one person working turned out to be the owner. He was seated and working on his laptop most of the time we were there. He is the reason we won't return. He rubbed us the wrong way! He kept saying that we couldn't make a meal at home as cheap as his prices were and made a point to remind us of how grateful we should be for being able to dine there so cheaply. For the $25 we spent on breakfast before adding an $8 tip, we could have purchased and prepared our own breakfast for at least 4+ days. Portions would have been bigger and it would have tasted better too. We are very aware of how much groceries cost and that they have increased in price. We don't need to be treated rudely or like we are idiots for disagreeing with the owner about how much the ingredients for our meals cost. We understand there are other costs involved when eating out at a restaurant, but his insisting that we agree with him that we couldn't have bought groceries and prepared the food ourselves for any less and the negative tone to his voice was enough for us not to return. Great local diner... I live less than 5 minutes from JoJo's, and have been there several times. Time for a quick review. I'm under the impression that the chef is also the owner. The menu is breakfast-centric (they open early and close at 2:00). There is also a slight Mediterranean bent... gyro omelet, for instance. The breakfast potatoes are a real favorite, thin, browned, crisp rounds... I always tell myself I'm not going to eat all the potatoes (I could stand to lose a few pounds!), but I always eat them anyway. This guy can cook! The food is fresh, flavors on point, and even though I've usually had breakfast there, I've also had a couple of burgers, which were excellent. The chili is also really great, and they always ask if you want cheese and chopped onions on it. I'm a little surprised by the comments about slow service. That has not been my experience, but perhaps it's because I'm retired, so I'm not going there at the crack of dawn. All in all, I recommend this place if you are looking for an old-fashioned diner with downhome food. I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

Decided on coming here since it's walking distance from my apartment, and had read some pretty decent reviews, from some respected yelp members. So the hours are 7am-2pm. They serve breakfast and lunch items. I came around 11 am. It was only, one other table besides me, I noticed more coming in through out my meal. This place seems to be a hidden gem! I had ordered the Double Up Breakfast, and substituted the French Toast for Pancakes. It includes the 2 Pancakes, that tasted just like my Grandmother used to make, when I was a kid, they were soo perfect. Home style Potato Slices, just like my Dad used to make me, although they lacked seasoning, nothing a little salt & pepper can't fix;) 4 strips of Bacon, nice and thick, although I found it to be a little bit salty, but I don't know if that came from me, trying to season my potatoes, or if its just that kind of bacon. And last but not least, eggs, which I got scrambled, and they were just a bit overdone for me, but nothing major. But thats the reason i gave 4 instead of 5 stars. Because im all about the Eggs. I had one of those moments. The kind where you drive past a place for so long, the intrigue within you builds to a point where you can't take it anymore. You have to go! That was the case with Jo Jo's Kitchen, a nice little diner in the Hazelwood/Florissant area. It's off of Howdershell road in the shopping plaza across from the fire station. Let's assess the checklist. Cheap? Yes. Greasy? Yes. Friendly and attentive wait staff? Yes. Let's just say I never had an empty cup of coffee. Oh, and they have corned beef hash. Sign me up! I ordered one of their egg specials, which came with two cooked the way I wanted (over-easy), the meat of my choice, hash browns, and toast. With coffee, my meal was only a bit over $7. They also offer burgers and I noticed they are open for dinner on Saturday night, which I"ll have to try next time I visit. If you're in North County and not feeling the usual chain place, check 'em out. We need more places like this! read more

Coffee alas was subpar (burnt flavor) but as a bonus there is a smoke shop a couple doors down with a limited cigar selection. Get the foil "locked in" moisture ones though as the humidifier is questionable. I don't often get frustrated but this is possibly the worst dining experience I've had in years. 25 minutes and no food and no refills on water. It's 95 degrees in the dining room. I was a faithful customer John's for a couple of years. The table staff was exemplary. Had no issues with the establishment...until today. Liz, the senior waitress was upset at something. I asked what the issue was and she started crying at my table. I told her just step outside and get some air. There was only two customers at one table and they were attended by another waitress. She proceeded outside to valm down. Minutes later, I went out to check on her, she wasn't doing any better. She told me what was wrong and I suggested that she take off because there was another employee coming in minutes. Then the owner steps out and started chastising her in front of me, the paying customer! Gave her a ultimatum and made the matter worst. I tried to tell him that she wasn't doing well but then started chastising me! The dedicated paying customer! I stop him short and told him he was wrong in chastising his employee in front of customers and most definitely was wrong in chastising a paying customer. He then walks away without apologizing. To the community around Jojo's Breakfast establishment, an ugly picture has now come to view. The manager of this establishment mistreated his customer in front of paying customers AND disrespects the paying customer without apologizing. THIS only shows that , Sean, the manager, is NOT fit to patronize in his business by anyone. He mistreated his staff and disrespects his customers. Therefore I will no longer give my business to a person who does this to customers and his staff. I suggest to the public to do the same. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite and ordered a sausage and mushroom pizza. What they served us was far and beyond our happy taste bud's expectations. I'm talking the cheesiest of FRESH toppings (owner/cook extraordinaire Shawn makes the hand tossed dough daily), and a generous piling on of assorted toppings masterfully paired with a full bodied red sauce on a delicately wood oven baked crust. The sauce is the best I've ever tasted which is saying a lot as I'm a pretty tough customer when it comes to pizza. It's not sweet or wine flavored but with just the right balance of full bodied tomato and a slightly zesty kiss of fresh Sicilian ingredients. Our waitress Liz was warm and welcoming while serving up fresh shakers of the usual condiments: Parmesan, peppers, and ground oregano. Our 12" pizza was generously portioned for two while costing just under 12.00. Not bad for a genuine brick oven Sicilian pizza with truly fresh ingredients and the cheesiest of yummy thick cheeses. We will be back very soon to check out the breakfast/lunch menu which looks to be extremely reasonably priced. (Tip- Breakfast served until 2 p.m. and pizza is served from 4 to 8 p.m.) All that said-- We'll be back soon because it was awesomely delicious! read more
